I've been away a while and have just come back and updated to 2018.3.2f1.
I decided to load up an old tutorial I was working though and it didn't like where I was up to... fair enough - I will start the course again.
So going back it instructs me to start a blank 3d project, and import asset > prototyping.

However upon clicking Assets > Import Package all I get is Custom Package.

Can someone point me please to where I may have gone wrong.

    Thanks
    Chris

New projects will always require reimporting assets. The way you said you did it is how you load in outside packages, anything not purchased on the Unity asset store. Anything purchased on the asset store is accessed inside the "asset store" tab attached to your main viewing window.

Edit: I think the new version is actually Window>Package Manager.
