Story: While putting the finishing touches on Retro Pixel Dungeons, Perpetual Diversion experimented with an alternate style for Retro 2D Characters, more inspired by the styles of Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger. The result is now at an Asset Store near you...

    AVAILABLE NOW! Click here!

Retro Pixel Characters - top-down, customizable characters inspired by classic, 16-bit JRPGs.

Update 1.1: Added new "Bat" hair and "Rhino" helmet, based on the new Retro Pixel Bosses pack!

Retro Pixel Characters features customizable male and female pixel art characters, with an array of movement, battle and emote animations. Choose between variations in skin tone, eye color, outfit and hairstyle/hair color. With a sample controller script and the SpriteSkin script, you've got a solid starting point for building the visuals and logic for your very own, 16-bit inspired characters!

    WebGL Demo - Click Here!

    Features:
    • Male and female bases, with 4 skin tone variations.
    • Full set of .PNG spritesheets and source .PSD files included.
    • Full set of prefabs, set up to use the sample scripts and with proper sorting.
    • 8 different eye colors.
    • 4 outfits; warrior, wizard, ranger and monk.
    • 7 hairstyles with 8 color variants per style.
      • Use color picker to make custom hairstyle hues!
    • Sample sword and crossbow, for battle animations.
    • 15 total animations, including:
      • Idle, Walk, Run, Lying, Dead, Shake Head, Nod, Shock, Cheer/Happy, Sit Idle, Swing Attack, Shoot Attack, Spell Chant, Damage and Hurt.
      • Fewer animations than Retro 2D Characters to make room for more detailed movement, attack and idle anims.
    • SpriteSkin script effortlessly switches spritesheets at run-time, requiring only one set of animations for all spritesheets.
      • Child objects use script to sync to the character base animations.

As you can see, it features a different, less chibi-like style from Retro 2D Characters and the black outline style has been omitted.

I should also mention, any possible, future free updates like new outfits or hairstyles will be made for both Retro Pixel Characters and Retro 2D Characters. :)

Feel free to leave a comment, or ask any questions if you have any!

The Retro Pixel Characters web demo is up! Click here to test it out.
It's a very basic demo, featuring the included sample controller for walking and running. The key art characters from Retro 2D Characters are back too, in the new style! :D

expansion pack as paid upgrades for more animations would be awesome! i think animations are more important than skins!

Thanks for your input! Extra animations is definitely something to consider for future updates, if people want it. :)

In other news, a demo video is now up! The key art characters from Retro 2D Characters return in new form to demonstrate the new Retro Pixel Characters set. I should really give them both names at this point. :D
The video is linked in the first post, but here it is again, for convenience!
