I have some Camera as well as Avatar Intro Animations before a Game starts.
Initially the Camera does not see the Avatars until they walk into the scene (no position changes, they walk in via the animation itself).
When the program starts I set "Update When Offscreen" to true.

As long as I look at the Avatars in either the Editors Scene View or the Game View
everything is fine (Avatars being animated in Scene and Game View).
But as soon as they are not visible initially in neither the Scene nor the Game View
they are not animated and hence never get visible in both views.

Is there something else to do..??
    Or is it a bug..?

    Hmmm.. I did a work-around now.
Though I would be interested to know whether its a bug or a feature..Or whether there is some better way fixing this (currently I make the camera look at the animated characters for a few frames).

same problem here, activating by code UpdateWhenoffscreen disables the animation.

I had the same problem as well.

Your animation component should have a check box for "Animate only if visible". I unchecked that and it solved my problem.
