    Hello!

We would like to sincerely thank you for participating in our Game Foundation beta, which we created to deliver off-the-shelf common game systems that simplify and speed up your development.

At this time, we have decided to pause development on Game Foundation and discontinue further updates to the package. The learnings and feedback from Game Foundation have been carried forward into several new products in our recently launched Unity Gaming Services platform.

Community members have been vocal about the challenge of building common game systems, such as in-game economies, and our Product and Engineering teams will continue to improve on our offerings in this space through Unity Gaming Services.

With the Game Foundation package no longer being supported, here are the changes you can expect in your project:
    • Game Foundation will continue to work without issue if you choose to keep using the package.
    • No new features will be added, but developers may customize the package to suit the needs of their game.
    • Future bugs discovered in the package will not be fixed.
    • For developers using Chili Connect, the adapter will stop working when ChilliConnect stops working.
To learn more about how Unity Gaming Services can be integrated into projects currently using Game Foundation, please visit the documentation page.

Be sure to explore the Unity Gaming Services Use Cases project, which has working samples of common Game Foundation and Unity Gaming Services use cases such as currency wallet, inventory, rewards, seasonal events, and more.

Your participation and feedback will greatly influence the long-term vision of Unity’s gaming services, and we thank you again for your partnership in this beta.

Please reach out if you have questions.

Looks like corporate greed vs. helping real game development: 1-0. Again. I'm an extremely sad panda.

It was a good idea, twisted into an IAP-fueled mutant. Rest in peace, another dead project in the Unity cemetery.

I just saw the Unite: Copenhagen demo video and thought this looked like a great package. Come to the forums and I am finding it is discontinued / merged into Gaming Services.
While I understand how these decisions are made, it really is quite a pity.

I would first like to say, thank you to the team who saw the need, started this project, and worked so hard on it. We appreciate your efforts.

Seems to me that the Unity team takes on way too many projects and doesn't build enough to completion, or ships them in an incomplete state. It can be a difficult challenge to work in this ecosystem.

    Hi @dasparadoxon,

Have you looked into Unity Gaming Services' Economy package at all? They have a lot of similar features as Game Foundation's inventory system, plus it has a built in cloud backend. We've also got a sample project that shows how to use the Economy system in various use cases, built by the same team as Game Foundation.

One last question : The game foundation package has vanished now from the Unity Package Registry. Can we have a package from the final latest version ? I have a branch of my InterAction Project that heavily relates to the GameFoundation and I don't have the time to rewrite the backend atm.

Of course I could try to extract the package from previous projects, but this is more than inconvient. :)

I looked at the Gaming Service, but I did not find yet a way to use the components localy without any connection/account to the Unity Game Services Servers ? Before I dive into that deeper, is it possible at all ?

    Hi @dasparadoxon,

The Game Foundation package should still be available in the Package Registry. My guess for why it's disappeared is that newer versions of Unity changed where you have to go to enable Preview packages (which is what Game Foundation was). If you go to Edit -> Project Settings -> Package Manager -> Enable Preview Packages you should see Game Foundation in the Unity Registry. However for posterity I've included a zip of the package as an attachment (though keep in mind it's still an unsupported/deprecated package).

You are correct that Unity Gaming Services is a server-based solution, and doesn't support a local-only mode.

Thank you so much for the stand alone package !!! This really eases my mind and helps me not procrastinating from the terrible merge of two branches that lies ahead of me and instead joyfully writing a whole inventory system backend. :)

And of course I turned on the "show experimental packages" option. The position where you can turn it off/on has changed in 2020. I am using 2021 atm for most of my projects so my guess was that they removed the not longer developed experimental package from the unity package registry with 2021.

And also I knew this could happen when I started to use the Game Foundation. But I learned a lot from it, so thanks for this as well.

*stops procrastinating and goes back to be amazed by GitHubs Copilot*

    Thank you again.
