My advice Unity should splatter this kid's game and face all over Unity Showcase and make him a poster boy for what can be done by anyone using Unity with little to no money, but with a dream and a little talent, time, effort, perseverance and determination...

Oh and don't forget to offer him a job before someone else snatches him up!

So take that Unreal and Crytek!

Not sure about Unreal but yay for Crytek.
Anyone else thinking CryEngine is really bad?

Let's focus on the topic instead, not the jab at the end... Its about Nelson 16 year old who created one of the hottest titles on steam right now using little more than Unity and blender and how if a 16 year old can with Unity certainly the rest of us can too...

Yay for Nelson! It is always wonderful to see young people succeed! I like that he is focusing on the community and allowing them to help guide the development of the game.

dang... and ive been wasting my time trying to make ... about call of duty 2 level of graphics (well maybe just a little better)

should just do graphics like that!

LOL i was totally going to make a game sorta like this, but i was like, meh... i gotta make ALL those items and stuff, (with ~cod2, cod4 graphics) and i sorta lost interest...
not to mention, theres sooo many zombie games, i was sorta like meh...

working on a 3rd person action RPG right now... gonna go for handdrawn textures, on, eh, maybe about PS2 level of 3d models. kinda cartoony low poly characters

personally, i think, as long as you can tell what stuff is, its good enough graphics,
but i know alot of people hate bad graphics..

but the thing is, really, i HATE photorealistic graphics, those games dont really Feel like games,
and like, i end up expecting that, if it looks like real, it should act like real, and alot of photoreal games, the actual way guns work and etc is not real at all, so it feels lame to me

so, okay, now i know graphics dont mean a thing. good to know!

i believe the best graphics EVER is like, Divine Divinity graphics, or Secret of Mana for SNES, handdrawn art,
battlefield 4 looks like crap in comparison.

theres some point where realistic just feels crappier...
you cant use your imagination anymore... .. or something,
it loses the sense of wonder and enchantment..

that said, i guess minecraft and this, absolutely maximizes wonder and enchantment value..
    hmm

(lol kids so lucky nowadays, get to do Unity and sell it as a hobby... at that age i was modding Morrowind and making maps for CoD2, and WolfET... no chance for profit, But, hell of a lot of useful experience :) ,
i dabbled with Gamemaker back then, i made some game, but i didnt even know it was possible to sell games, didnt even think about it, i just trashed that game when i got bored of it, didnt even post online anywhere, it was pretty good, better than some mobile games that are making alot of money)

What's even more puzzling about the Unity showcase is that it features games that haven't even been released or demoed. In the showcase I sense a strong bias towards games requiring a massive art budget.

Of course that's the point of the showcase. We do showcase games with varying development team size and budgets. This might not be the prettiest game, but it's still in development, made by a 16 year old and it in the top 5 most played on Steam. A success most developers can only dream of, colour me impressed.

What would be wrong in them showcasing a few best selling games that didn't look completely "up to par" with many peoples' art expectations?

Actually i think the game looks great, think of it as a style of art the way its done. You can expect more games to look like this. Best of all it runs great and its very functional and feature rich. Right now better than any other game in it's genre.

I mean the thing is #3/4 on steam and there is no reason with the currently level of functionality and features he has that it wont be there for a while. Plus it's smart / good for business to plaster him all over the place because you will get a lot of people as a result of what he has done looking and playing around with Unity that otherwise may have not.

100% agree, the game looks and plays fantastic, except to those who wouldn't give any game a second look if a massive multimillion dollar art and development budget isn't involved. The game deserves to be showcased on talent and game-play alone, especially when there are showcased games that haven't even been released or demoed.

Hi just touching bases since i still do not see the game in Unity Showcase or even Made With Unity listing of games made with Unity...

Anyone knows why this game is still not showcased and/or even listed in games made with Unity?

I mean the game is one of the hottest games on Steam that has ever been made with Unity. It most likely has more downloads/players than all the games currently listed in Unity Showcase plus Made With Unity combined!

It's not jsut that it's easily top 25 most played games on Steam, not for a day, not for a week, not for a month, but since it was released on Steam some 6 months ago. None of the list in the showcase and/or made with unity even come close on Steam.

If I was whoever is responsible for those web pages run out and contact Nelson and get him on it cause it shows that even a 16 year can make it with Unity. I mean someone should run out and get Nelson / Unturned on those pages. I for the life of me cannot understand why this has not already happened. I do understand its just one guy and that he spends his free time working on it and 0 time marketing / promoting it.

So who is responsible for those pages and who does one get a game listed. I'm not talking about anything I'm working on, but surely Unturned should be listed at lest in Made With Unity...

    (hey can't say i ain't trying...)

This is an awesome example of a view I often express in various forum posts. Devs need to stop focusing so much on absolute graphics quality and focus more on the game play. I think this game looks fine. It is clear what each object is. The display is very clean. By using this presentation style he can focus on the actual game... the mechanics, objectives, interactions, feedback and so forth. I wish Unity would showcase it as well. So people (devs) can stop saying "players only want games with the latest AAA graphics". The stats here tell a very different story.

its not voxel based. dont let the art style fake u the game play is solid that is what put it and keeps it on steam top 100 most play list for well over half year now. @GarBenjamin hit the nail on the head, although one could say it does not look very realistic, the way it handles, the mechanics, interaction, feedback, etc are better than most AAA...
