Untiy 64bit 5.1.1F1 Crashing

I am having all sorts of issues.

I am using a brand new win 8.1 64bit laptop.

I have installed unity 64bit using the downloader. The 64 bit just crashes immediately at launch. I worked around this by using the 32bit manual installer. However, that just is completely broken for me. Components do not add correctly, simple functions like copy paste do not work.

I am trying to work out this 64bit crashing error.

Is there anything written into Unity's Editor.log file? The Windows error you posted means nothing to me...

Hmm.. the logs say that Unwrap.dll was the last Unity thing to run and then boat loads of Windows errors happened. Searching for that shows:

Not 100% sure what the fix was... but maybe message @TwlLek and see what happened?

 

Thing is I'm not even loading a scene. This is fresh install with nothing unity related on the laptop. The launch process doesn't even reach the initial start screen of unit. It's crashing at the splash. Within 1 second of double clicking the icon. The worst is that this is the 2nd laptop this is happening on. 1 and Asus this one a Toshiba, Both running win 8.1

 

Hmmm... well the error seems to suggest that Unity is getting stuck into processing things... so perhaps there is some default stuff it's loading. Guess sending in a bug report to bugs@ and including OS version, and the errors you mentioned here are what's needed. Can't think of any other work arounds. :-(

 

Well I'll just have to suck it up and deal. I'm going to return this laptop on Friday for an upgrade and then find a win7 install.

 

Hi, I'm also having the same error as you. I upgraded to 5.1.1f1 with the agent and now I can't start up unity at all. Seems like no one has an answer to why this is happening. I'm running windows 8.1(64bit) as well.
And the Editor log looks the same as Grallye.

 

I'm unable to open unity 5.1.1f1 latest version on a new computer (Windows 8.1 64bit). I installed it on to my machine and when i click the unity icon an error message appears saying unity editor has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

 

Yea this is pretty darn frustrating. More so that I have to just dump an entire laptop and shop around for a win 7 machine.

 

Post the bug number here and I'll prod the QA team.

 

I submitted the report but I have not gotten a number yet via email. It's been several hours.

I did find that I could roll all the way back to 5.0.3f2 and It would successfully launch.

 

Guys having problems, I pulled back to win 8 instead of 8.1 and the newest version of unity now works.

 

ai..... that's a terrible walk-around. Reverting to a crappy OS revision because Unity can't properly support their product.

 

Well, our QA team has thoroughly tested Unity on Win8.1 and confirmed that it works. It's unfortunate when customers run into problems, which is why we ask for information about their issues and machines, and get bug reports sent in for our QA team to take a look.

 

Well here's the oddball thing. My laptop wasnt cutting it. So I ended up getting a new Win 8.1 machine with an SSD, and guess what. The install on the ASUS and Toshiba 8.1 machines didnt work. This Lenovo machine...with 8.1 the 64 bit editor works.

It could possibly be an issue with the windows 8.1 image on specific OEMs. My suggestion to anyone having this issue, is to do a clean reinstall of windows 8.1 and test. I'll wear a damn NY mets hat for a week if it doesn't fix the issue.

 

With me is the same thing going on! 5.0.1f1 worked quite well and when I update on 5.1.1f1 it crash on the splash screen.(" Unity editor has stoped working" ) I even downloaded the latest patch version 5.1.1p4 the same again! This is really frustrating. I hope you will repair soon. My system is win 8.1 64bit

 

My son is having the same problem. All was working well and then suddenly 5.1.1 stopped launching. He can't get to the project page. He also uses Windows 8.1.

He can get 5.03 to work fine but all of his code is written in 5.1.1 as are the assets he is using so none of them will work.

He did all the usual, rebooting, uninstalling, reinstalling Unity, copying out project in case it was one of them...nothing works.

So, while he has backups of his work, it is useless. Any ideas how to fix this so he can continue?

 

My suggestion is to try a clean reinstall of windows. I am now using a win 8.1 machine with the latest unity build and it works. It seems to be something with the OEM images conflicting with Unity. If you read up I was also able to run 5.0.3. but not 5.1.1 on two other OEM machines.

 

Ahh, that is what I thought it might be. Of course, that means we have to spend a day copying over all his other files in order to reinstall windows. Ah well, another day lost.

So are you suggesting a complete factory wipe? Won't that install all the OEM again?

A complete reformat of the HDD/SDD. This way you do not have any of the OEM software. Just windows 8.1. You may need to check out what windows has saved into onedrive if you use it, to prevent the OEM software from being reinstalled on first boot.

 

I managed to install 5.0.2 and it's working ok!. Unfortunately a complete reinstallation of the system is currently not an option because of some data that are important to me. I hope they will be able to fix the bug error

 

For those still crashing, can you please verify which version of 5.1.x you're running?

 

Ryan was using 5.1.1f on his laptop with 8.1. He has the same result with 5.1.

He then installed on our desktop with Windows 7 Unity 5.1.1f and it did not crash but it sat at the connecting screen for two hours.

He is attempting to try 5.1 on the desktop now.

Both computers have run Unity fine before this with no problem. 5.03 runs great on both computers but his project and the assets he is using are in 5.1.

Edit: Ryan did a refresh on his laptop and now 5.1.0f3 works for him. Yay! He is not going to try 5.1.1 again.

 

Another edit...He did get 5.1.0f3 to work on the desktop and recognize a test project. Hopefully that will work for his projects. It would not work with windows 8.

No crash dump. The recovery deleted a lot of those files unfortunately. If it happens again, I will be sure to save it.

I'm having the same crashing issue. However, I can get into my project by double click the scene icon in the project asset folder. However Unity also crashes when I am clicking file->new project, or edit->sign in.

 

Yes! Something is definitely wrong with 5.1.1. on windows 8.1

 

As I told my son...only 3 more weeks to Windows 10.

 

Alex this occurs on all versions of unity newer than 5.0.3f2. It seems to be an OEM windows issue causing it. As on my 3rd OEM install a, Lenovo laptop, the latest Unity works just fine.

 

You can locate the crash info in Event Viewer. The additional files locations are noted in the viewer logs.

 

If any of you are somewhat more windows debugging technically inclined and if you're set up to catch the crash via Visual Studio, that's one route to capture the crash for us. (if grallye's advice via the Event Viewer doesn't result in dmp files)

Thus far I don't think our QA has managed to repro, so we're completely blind on information to figure out what's wrong specifically. The info from DadiousA points to something with the project wizard/home screen being the issue, but how...we need more info.

 

I found the Editor.log file under my username/AppData/Local/Unity folder. I noticed that there is a "crash!!!" word in it? Hope this file can help. (I changed the extension to .txt so I can upload it)

 

My son had Unity running fine for a day or two using 5.1.0 and then this morning, Unity crashed while he was trying to log in. We do have the file for you this time.

Tried it in a clean boot and same result.

 

I found the bug on my computer that made Unity crashes every time in the project selection window. It's a ”.dll" file which created by my VPN client. After I uninstall the VPN, I can run Unity again.

 

I get the same on clean install of Win8.1 on XPS with DX11. Rolling back to 5.0 which is a real pity as I'm working on VR.

Basically what happens is , Unity Editor Stops working as soon as I doubleclick on the unity icon to start the application.
This problem persists for the unity 5 project , a blank project and also unity 4.x project.
My laptop is brand new , with hardly any software installed.
I also tried unity's latest patch 5.1.1p4 but it didn't work.
I also tried selecting "run with graphics processor" as Nvidia option but still no solution.

I think grallye is right Unity 5.1.1 definitely have some issues with Asus laptops runnning on Windows 8.1

 

My son's computer is an Asus laptop too. Seems to be a connection. He wiped it and is using 5.1 now instead and it is working fine. We are afraid to upgrade though, which is sad since so many new assets require 5.1.1

Just found that Unity has launched a new version 5.1.2 will give it a try.

Damn Unity 5.1.2 has the same issues .. no improvement at all.

No problem. Makes me sad too....now it means we can't use any new assets. I can't upgrade either since my son can't and he is a member of our team.

I hope the fix this soon.

 

Sounds like I am having the exact same issue. I have Win8.1 and Unity 1.2.1, and Unity 'stops working' when it begins to launch.

I do not know how to assess error logs or send relevant data for the Unity team, though.

 

Unfortunately the logs provided and the bugs listed aren't still not giving enough information to root out anything. I really need a crash dump.

The only random item that jumps out here and there is a LavasoftTcpService64.dll that's loaded in the Unity process. A complete shot in the dark, but could people look to uninstall that related software to see? (though I'm guessing its unlikely to have any impact)

 

I was able to get into Unity by opening a scene directly instead of opening the shortcut.

I think that might be because I moved my project folders recently, and my Unity is set to ask me to select a project if I open just Unity (and not open a scene at first).

 

Alex, when we asked where to get these crash dumps you told us the logs in the app files, or someone did. Is there somewhere else we can look?

 

They are .dmp (or possibly .mdmp) files usually, but it's unclear to me if windows is saving these off somewhere. Though, I'm concerned that they may only be for full system crashes.
I'd say search the drive and see if the file timestamps line up to your crashes.

We're relying on windows at this point to collect something, as it's clearly early or bad enough to be by-passing our bug reporter. The only other step we can consider is having someone "catch" the crash in a debugger and save off a dmp file as needed. Let's see if you find a valid dmp file for us to look at.

 

If you tell me where to find them, I will load it up on my laptop and see if I can get it to crash. It won't be a full crash though...they have always just been Unity crashes.

 

Hey Iv been following this thread for a while now and .. I found solution their from Alex Lian. I uninstalled something called Lavasoft Web Companion.. and now it works ..plus.. Iv been having problems with some other apps connecting and that's resolved as well.

I searched on my computer for lavasoft and found the main folder. I did not have any idea it installed and how.

Anyhows it should be here C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Web Companion. I used a website (listed below) to learn how to uninstall it as its not listed in the add-remove software within windows control panel.
