UNITY'S FANCY NEW LOGO

Maybe I don't like it because it feels so corporate now. I suppose I generally do like alignment and rigidity in shapes, but the logo seems devoid of any kind of fun that Unity seemed to have.

Then again, maybe that's an accurate reflection of who they are now. Not fun, just rigid and poorly abstracted? I also cannot even follow those animated 3d logos. No idea what those things are supposed to be.

 

Someone please teach them what the difference between dynamic and static composition. This logo is not dynamic at all. Previous logo was dynamic and lightweight, current one is the opposite

 

Jokes aside, how worried should we be about Unity being bought by Adobe? This could be the last nudge that many hobbyists need to start using Godot for their 2D projects imho.

This has been a UI pet peeve of mine for about 2 decades. I want a shortcut/button to say what it is in words, otherwise I'll just hover with the mouse over it till the mouseover text tells me. I can't make sense of most icons without the text descriptions.

 

If they treat us with respect, care and love - as a huge corporation can really afford to do - I will treat them back how I am treated. I mean, Unity is a public company. It doesn't matter who owns what, just matters - like I've always championed - that people are treated with care.

If not, then be worried, big time.

 

We would see proper integration with the Substance products... I would see that as a win.

Yeah, I'm with you. The only acceptable point is the unification of logos across the products, but other than that...

 

The shadow looks a lot more like the old logo, and is so much more interesting.

A problem I see is the new logo looks isometric, which is essentially a 2D mimic of a stylised 3D, whereas the old was 3D because it appeared to have perspective. It seems the wrong direction when Unity is trying to make headway in other industries with 3D applications such as product visualisation and movie making.

 

The new and worse logo is [apparently] explained in a broken link to the blog that has a new and worse organisation, so I cannot find the page directly.

This was correctly white earlier like chrome's and now they've made some sort of really badly rendered blob.

 

Wonder how many people you'd need to poll about the symbolism of the logo before they answered with anything close to that. And since when do arrows represent infinite possibilities. It's like this was written by an AI.

 

It reads precisely like it is intended for shareholders reading about their investment.

 

It's far more inscrutable as a browser tab image, definitely don't care for it there.

Just to be clear though I think most of the complaints are overblown.

Ive reported internally the logo differences directly to the Branding team (I spotted them too!)

I don't like the logo, but that is very mild compared to how much I hate that website, it is really awful. Scroll with the mouse and it goes past about three different bits in one go, but does it extremely jerkily. That type of scrolling has never been good on any website that has ever done it, and this is worse than the others that do it.

 

It stands for Shenanigans, which is what happens when marketing is out of control.

 

this how the new branding reads: "we redefining a bunch of stuff like how the brain works because that IPO disposable money can't evaporate fast enough"

 

I suggested (both in the YouTube comments and on Twitter) that Unity make this available as an asset and/or scene we can use as frontends in our game builds.

Yes I know you can download the video, slap it on a quad and use the VideoPlayer feature or something but I'm talking about an official package with a scene or asset that we can put into our systems and use instead of the flat logo. Could even make a 3D and a 2D version of the package for this.

Maybe with help from this community we can give that idea some juice and make it happen?

 

Good thing there usually are captions next to icons, cause these "icons" tell me nothing.

I imagine someone at Unity asking:
Why is the main logo not just a cube with "Ut" in it too?
What you say? Not recognizable enough?
Oh, okay then, move on.

I have boycotted Adobe for decades. I don't use Substance and I don't use Mixamo, and if Adobe bought Unity I would stop using Unity. It's not like my income is on the line, all my projects are hobby level, so I have that luxury.

 

so are my Unity tshirts with the old logo considered deprecated or LTS now?

I mean I'm not very fashionable but I don't want to look like an old grandpa missing new trends either

 

They join the Animation component into being "Legacy".

Which means you shouldn't be wearing them, but if you complain about the new t-shirts not being as comfortable, Unity will tell you the old t-shirts are "an important part of your toolset" and that you should be wearing them.

 

i really like the new logo, as i said before, but i just saw that logo with blue background in the facebook page and it looks bad, do not use that blue jajaja is ugly AF

 

I thought they were chemical element symbols at first. Then they spun and I thought..what kind of crap is that???..wait..those symbols aren't chemical elements...the are icons..icons for what?? Oh..more Unity diversity marketing. I am so frikkin' tired of this monolith of diversity I reflexively gag and roll my eyes at the codswallop and balderdash when this catchphrase that has infested the modern mania is uttered in some kind of display of magnanimity . They need to cram it collectively.

It's pretty clearly clear what it is. It's even got the word "CLEAR" in massive caps.

Fairly sure this community, filled with people like us, made the tone of Unity.

Bollocks is a fantastic word, it's often used to describe the phenomenon of something that doesn't make sense vs the reality, or marketing in general.

It's for investors and high end customers, not sweaty little indies.

 

When I saw that page, I thought "Well, didn't knew Unity also makes music now" because the overall stylistic choice (e.g. that scrolling band on the left side) somehow look like some singer's website (at least to me *haha*). Guess it's good that they didn't go the "some wide font with outline only" route there...

I spoke to a designer who has no relation to Unity about the logo. He finds the new better, stronger, more mature. But also said that the old logo has more identity.

 

Ironically, vintage and nostalgia is always 'in fashion'. Ill still be wearing my old Unity shirts (granted they are faded after nearly 10 years...)!

If "to demonstrate alignment with Unity" doesn't sound totalitarian and has a creepy "if you're not for us, you're against us" vibe, I don't know what does.

I don't have that kind of optimism for anything related to Adobe.

I think they would drop the free tier of Unity and fold that one into the creative cloud subscription. Which I'm still successfully avoiding because I hate Adobe for pulling that stunt. And both their bottom line and the state of their software are an absolute testament to subscriptions being exactly as anti-consumer as I always knew they would be. They make sh1ttons of money while not backing it up with proportionate stability, or performance or new features.

 

Can we have new splashscreen without "Made with"? This phrase near the logo always looked ugly and now it's great opportunity to fix that

I assume 90% are here for the jokes / the banter (I am). People rarely like change. Once the dust has settled all will be good again. I hope none of the people responsible for the design read this thread.

I personally don't really care too much about that logo. I remember when I first saw the old unity logo. I did not like it too much. Seeing this new one I though, it's okay. Not sure why they changed it, but okay. Those other icons I don't understand.

I agree. Marketing is doing what it is supposed to do. Investors ought to be happy. Though, if investors use iPads or phones then they might not be happy as that brand page does not work at all on mobile or tablet (at least not on mine).

 

Is Unity changing coordinate system to Z-Up instead o Y-Up?
