Unity5 - Shadow through transparent shader - Alpha?

    I am getting some weird behaviours when a directional light shines through a material with the shader set to transparency. I am trying to control the amount of light with the alpha of the Albedo color multiplier. I get a checker or mesh pattern with 3 different densities as I increase the alpha. At about 50 all visible light shining through is gone, but the scene still responds to it's intensity. Then at around 130, the same 3 chacker/mesh patterns repeat. Whats going on?
