I really want to know about some Unity features described as desired here. Will navigation be able to be used in 2D? Also, will Unity2D be available for use on the XZ plane for top-down shooters, rts, tower defense, etc.? Many 3D games could definitely use 2D circle colliders for range detection.

If anybody's seen or heard about these things, please share!

No, but there's nothing stopping you from making top-down shooters and everything else using the XY plane.

Is there navigation in XY? Another problem is editing terrain and the map in general on XY. The editor camera becomes really frustrating to use as well. Man, I really wish 2D features could support the 3D environment.

I agree about the editor camera. There should be an option to "swap planes" for it or something. I never want to use the XZ plane for 2D because I've tried it before and you have to always keep a mental note about how Z is actually Y etc. I felt it was a hassle. XY works perfectly fine for top down 2D games, at least for me as I'm currently making one. But like you said the 3D editor camera becomes unusable when working in the XY plane.
