It's not about this at all and it's unfortunate anyone looks at it this way, we invest in Unity and we want it to be the best it can be. If X Engine is better, we want Unity to improve to match it.

Why anyone would be against an engine improving to save you or me money is beyond me.

    @andytouch

Go right ahead, but it never changes the fact things evolve and improve. If another party or product can act as a mentor for Unity to improve then so be it. Have the humility to find out what works for your competitors and play on it.

This OMG there are sooo many UE4 threads, lets lock it down does nobody justice. You need a reference point like I use other games as reference points. It only makes sense to reference other engines when looking at potential upgrades.

Well this makes sense. I "get" it if it is about wanting Unity to improve. What confused me is we see threads started specifically about UE vs Unity and then we see threads about graphics in general and sooner or later someone comes in and drags those into another UE vs Unity discussion. I don't remember ever reading a post where the person raving about UE mentioned they want to stay with Unity. In fact from the posts I read I had the impression it was UE users posting over here.

No offense intended to anyone. I really just asked because I didn't get why we see the same stream of posts every week in a different thread. Now I understand it better. Basically the posts are lobbying for upgrades to Unity because these people would prefer to stay with Unity.

If it weren't for this thread I'd have likely never heard of 'Ghost of a Tale'. So at least something good came from it.

Yep. UE4 will at least have some mention in any discussion surrounding engine capabilities. Crytek as well but that engine isn't particularly great and the community for it is lousy.

I agree as when X or Y proposes features saving you lot of time and money , it's Unity interest to take a look and gather some ideas. A downside point for some advanced users with UE is that it don't have out of the box some awesome plugins functionnalities like Shader Forge, enhanced terrain plugins , u-script , enhanced effects and visuals extensions. As a big company it should possible to them to make the most usefull integrated in the editor.

I want to make clear that this is just my opinion, but personally I think Unreal Engine 4 has a lot better graphics than Unity -- and I think it's safe to say better than what Unity 5 will bring as well.

But it still remains an engine that is highly tuned for one or two types of game genres. Yes, it's trying to branch out.....but you simply can't make a complex engine like UE4 be something it's not.

But the fact of the matter is that UE4 is very complex, and really hard to learn -- simply because there are not a whole lot of code examples for specific functionality yet that is widely available. If you want to do something "simple", it takes like a month to do.

Unity makes things a LOT easier -- and usually the tradeoff of slightly less graphical power for being able to implement what you want in your game, makes Unity completely worth it -- especially for a single developer. But I know a lot more about Unity than I currently do about UE4. I use Unity a lot more.

Just browse all their Youtube tutorials, you have all detailled information for anything you would need. It's far more easy to learn than Crysis or UDK 3. I made game prorotypes gameplay using blueprints in some days like many other guys and it's like you didn't touched it a lot. UE4 is not so trivial indeed when you go advanced in some areas and as it contains lot of premade stuff to not re invent the whell, but once you learned it , this will be just a big time saviour for your projects.

Did you used their tools ? like Persona and character tools, character slots, auto generated collision shapes for characters bones on import , collision volumes generation tool, water physics volumes , particles systems etc ... Unity can be easy and better in some points, but it's not good on other points.

UE4 is not the Nirvana, if you would use it more you could see for example it lacks some real fast road editor for terrain or some real water ocean, and they are still trying to find some realtime GI solution for big levels for example.
UT5 will bring some features, but still be missing many ones, hopefully what will keep Unity on track is plugins makers mainly , some plugins make Unity better than UE4 on some rendering areas :

Don't under estimate Unity plugins :)

It isn't necessary for them to implement every shortcut. Creating a road is easy enough with a Blueprint containing a spline and a mesh. Just set the mesh to deform according to the spline. Then place an instance of the Blueprint where you want the road to start and drag the spline in the level editor.

Additional functionality, such as keeping the mesh/spline level with the terrain, can be handled from the Construction script.
