Hello, guys! Is someone experienced in making Augmented Reality like this?:

    screenshot.jpg
It would be very appreciated to get some ideas of how to make this. What software and hardware are being used for that and etc. Having some conversations with people who are engaged into fields close to AR I got to know Unity is widely being used for such kind of projects. I also got information of how to make something like this by using tablets, phones and etc. to display content. But how to visualize 3D content in real environment with minimum of electronic and wearable devices like to the links above and people to interact with the 3D content? What type of projectors is being used and hardware/software to get this?
Thanks in advance, guys! Any information is very appreciated!

I don't get it. How does this work?

None of them are wearing special glasses or whatever.

I just skipped to where the animals started showing on the last video.

Well, you MIGHT can find some information on............ to be honest. Look up the Tupac Hologram Concert thing they had going on in the near past... You might can scoop up some info on how they go about at least getting a hologram like that to work with a certain projector, etc.

I'm sorry I'm not much help, but I at least gave you a lead to check up on lol.

They're watching the composite image from a projector screen.

    Ohh, now I get it.

Well that isn't nearly as cool as I thought it was, heh.

It helps garner some attention for those unaware of the concept, but otherwise it isn't very impressive. I'd imagine you could achieve something similar using the Kinect.

Personally I like the virtual environment concept that was mentioned on BBC back in May.

Thanks for your replies! I read about Tupac Hologram Concert. This was very useful for me. I am also going to learn more information about Kinect. This is one more example of such projects with AR:

Could this be done with the same concept like Tupac Hologram Concert? Visually it looks more complicated.
    Thanks for any help!

I investigated this for a project recently, unfortunately Princess Leia style holograms are impossible. Tupac is an old effect - Peppers Ghost. There is a company that calls it a hologram, but really it's a big sheet of plastic, and the audience is looking at a reflection.

The national Geo example is probably simple blob tracking, or a pressure sensor to know when people are in the target area.

Found an interesting article from 2011 where a company has managed to produce a hologram using a laser. It works by focusing the beam at a certain location in the air which causes the molecules to become excited to plasma levels and thus give off light.

Haven't looked into it much but there's the Voxiebox. (IIRC it's similar to what Ryiah linked)

How does a sheet of plastic run around a stage with arms flapping and legs moving and lip sync? lol. (serious question) because I really don't know lol.

oh and no there not, you ever watch Histroy Channel #2? The guy has the next gen of Holograms, it pops up like the scifi movies and he can interact with it. I always thought it was fake, but naw it's real lol.

What you see as a hologram is a reflection. Put a piece of paper on your car dashboard, the reflection appears to 'float' in front of the road. There are two tricks to make it work in theater. One, the audience can't see what's being reflected, so the stage must be higher than the audience. You can actually put people in a pit, unseen to the audience and they will be reflected.

For Tupac, and a few other concerts I've seen video of, the thing that is reflected is a projection on the floor. Like I said, it's an old technique. The modern update is that instead of using glass, they can stretch a sheet of plastic really tight, so it's invisible.

I hadn't seen the laser example Ryiah posted when I researched this. That's getting slightly closer to a Princess Leia type thing, but really it's not much different than a laser show using fog to catch the light. Same thing is true underwater, it requires something visible for the laser to hit.

If you think about it the concept is essentially the same as a 3D printer. You're basically "printing" the image on the air using the air itself as the "ink". I was actually looking for that specific idea when I stumbled upon the article.

This is one of my favorite AR implementations:

We've done some kinect digital signage and use vuforia and metaio a lot.
