Woohoo.. this is going to be a very exciting competition.
So if your game wins, aside from the prizes, is there any promotion from Microsoft in the store? Will they be doing any publishing deals?

    The submission page says:

What executable file would this be? For a windows desktop build? Because this would remove any platform-specific features being used on Windows 8 / Windows Phone 8.

So, sorry if this is a dumb question

"Contestants must create original games or content in Unity 4 using Windows Store Pro add-on or Windows deployment in the free version of Unity."

is this something to download, does this mean an export setting ? Sorry a little newbie... :D

Download Unity 4.2, it was released yesterday and it has the Windows Store Add-On included.
Yes, it is an export setting, switch the platform in Build Settings to Windows Store Apps.

.appx I think, thats for both Phone and Windows Store apps. It's a mistake on the website that I will get corrected, thanks for brining it up.

    .appx won't be enough.

Here are simple instructions for Windows Store Apps, what you need:
    * From Visual Studio go to Project->Store->Create AppPackages
    * Check No for "Do you want to build packages to upload to the Windows Store?"
    * Select Release configuration and pick appropriate architectures, for ex., X86 ARM
    * Hit Create
    * Go to Output location
    * There you should find two folders, for ex.,
    MyApp_1.0.0.0_X86_Test
    MyApp_1.0.0.0_ARM_Test
    * Those folders contain appx package, dependencies, and a powershell script for installing the app locally
    * Zip those, and send

It's not bundled with Unity, but you can get the Express Edition for free from Microsoft.

Any age of participants are welcome, we can't accept under 18 submissions because of the legislation, and in case you win, it would be very complex to give you your prize. So my recommendation would be to get your guardian to enter the competition for you.

So if I may ask a question, TY you for the dude who replied earlier... My question is - I am making my 1st 3D game in unity, and I am using some original stuff and some assets from the unity store, is this ok ?

Also, I am making my game on a mac, When Its time to transfer to a UNITY in windows 8 (I assume I have to publish it from windows 8 ?) Is there going to be any problems ? I mean does unity transfer from Mac to PC unity ok ?

Can I put windows 8 on my Mac and do it that way ? Sorry I am not sure where else to ask :) Thank you.

Apparently anything made using JS or BOO will fail WACK. (see here) Does that mean only C# scripted games are allowed to enter? Can anyone clarify?

Is Microsoft Dev Center license required to enter the Windows Phone 8 competition or is there a way to enter the phone competition without paying Microsoft for the license?

Sorry if there is an obvious answer to this question, but I can't find any mention about Microsoft developer license requirement from Unity web site. However, at Microsoft's own developer site, it is stated that a paid license is required to build for Windows Phone 8.

Was wondering if windows 8 is a must condition for the competition or can you build your project on windows 7 as long as unity 4.2 is used?

They state in the first post that "You must have Windows 8 installed on your computer." I don't think that you can build Windows 8 or Windows Phone 8 software with anything else than Windows 8. Another "smart" decision by Microsoft.

I have thought that you also can't build for Windows Phone 8 without paid Microsoft developer license, but there is nothing about such requirement in the contest rules so I guess it is not required to build for Windows Phone 8 using Unity?

I just don't feel like purchasing and installing Windows 8 just to find out that Unity doesn't work without paying some more money to Microsoft, so it would be nice if someone confirmed if the developer license is required or not.

Was kinda hoping you could get around that requirement or that it wasn't it.Ah well.I guess the best thing is to just carry on as if this thing isn't even on :D

I'm not sure if its required but then again without it you can't really test the game on an actual device and emulator is not supported at the moment. Editor testing is not enough and using iOS/Android might still mean that there are problems when running on the WP8 like lag, missing graphics etc. (since its a new platform target with its own bugs).

Will the prizes for honorable mentions (Unity Pro licenses) be transferable (i.e. can I sell or give it to someone else as I already have Pro).

Using a mix of original and bought Assets is fine as long as you credit what is not yours.

Not really sure how you are able to develop and use some of the windows specific stuff without encountering a tonne of errors when developing, but you will need Windows 8 in the end to publish.

It is possible to bootcamp Windows 8.

    Jaans, to clarify:
You don't need a Dev Center membership to start building for Windows Phone 8.
You just need the Windows Phone SDK (free download: https://dev.windowsphone.com/downloadsdk).
The SDK requires Window 8. See all system requirements: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35471
Since Unity doesn't support yet exporting to the emulator, you need a Windows Phone 8 device to test.
The device needs to be registered, see here
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsphone/develop/ff769508(v=vs.105).aspx

You don't need to buy the Dev Center Membership to register the device.
When you are ready to publish your app/game to the Windows Phone Store, then you need to purchase the Dev Center membership (it's only $19 until 8/27, see http://dev.windowsphone.com/join)

    Hello,

    Just a quick question here.

Can we submit games deployed with the TRIAL version of Unity Pro?

    Regards,

On Windows 8 you can only use C#. Windows Phone 8 supports JavaScript but I'd stick to C# if possible.

I am using Unity 4.2 free version. I hope it is supported. Do I also have to upload the game on Windows Store/Windows Phone Store to participate?

Also how do I have to mention the use of free assets used from the Asset Store?

For Windows Store Apps, you have to zip your package - see my post above in this thread.
For Windows Phone 8, you have to zip a xap file

You do not need to upload to the store, you can mention any assets that were used in game credits and/or a readme file with your entry.

Oh, yes of course. But version of Visual Studio doesn't matter? I have VS 2010, should I setup VS 2012 to participate in competition?

    -Unity Package
-Visual Studio Project created (after building from Unity)
-App File created from Visual Studio (after packing from Visual Studio)

When you right-click on your project in Visual Studio and choose Store -> Create app package, you need to upload all the output of that folder.

How do I upload more than one game? cause you can submit 10 games right? or I misunderstood that part...
right now i what to submit my second game but it says that the email is already taken, so I have to upload all games to the ftp repository assigned to my mail? In that case I couldn't follow the naming convention the contest specifies. Or should I have to create 10 mails for each game?

    Thanks

Do I need to change the splash screen, icons etc. while submitting? I think I read somewhere that these cannot be changed in the free edition of Unity.

The requirements says "Upload your Unity Project file". Does it mean that we should send all the project files with assets etc. or what exactly? All the *.unityproj files?

Upload it to the same FTP and just add a 2 on the end of the filename so there is a difference, then clearly state in an accompanying text file the different entires.

You are not required to change the splash screen.

Yes the whole project folder, preferably compressed for easy upload and download. This is to ensure there has been no cheating.
