Today we announced that we are starting the end-of-life process of the Unity Web Player plugin. Unity 5.2 and 5.3 will still be able to publish Web Player content, but Unity 5.4 (to be released in March 2016) will no longer ship with Web Player support.

Read more in the blog post about the deprecation of the Web Player.

Current web status quo is getting everyone mad. It's unfortunate we are caught in middle of all of this chaos. I'm not blaming anyone but this sucks and should have been addressed in a more coordinated fashion among all stakeholders. Whole industry here is losing.

Seriously, webgl is not good enough.
Just an example: in webplayer I can import good normal maps at runtime but in WebGL the same code sucks ... :(

I've just tried exporting in Unity 5.2.1p1 and the Web Player couldn't play it. Reading that the patch releases will not work, I downgraded to 5.2.1f1 and the Web Player has an error occurred when trying to run our game. I think you may have missed a 5.2.1 Web Player release, is that the case?

So we need to wait for 5.4 for the Engine to go live on Wii U Web Player? Or is This Only For The Web Player Itself?

There is no more web player. Unity 5.3 is the last version to have webplayer support. Also it has nothing to do with Wii U; it's only on OS X and Windows.

...And we can all blame this on Google's relentless stupidity on dropping NPAPI support. And all for security? I call BS, since I haven't heard of any sort of "backdoor" hack done through it.

Either way, sort of sad to see the webplayer go. Didn't unity start out as a webplayer builder only?

No, it did Mac and Windows (if you had Pro) builds first.

So I'm guessing the web player was the only option for free users? interesting... may as well steer off this thread and find the history archives some time... ;)

There were no free users; you paid $400 for Unity Indie (which had Mac, webplayer, and Dashboard publishing) or $1500 for Unity Pro (which added Windows publishing).

Why does it need a webplayer in the first place, I see engines like Haxelflixel work fine without one.

Good job resurrecting a 3 years old thread and commenting on web player, which is almost 10 years old technology and was removed years ago, like it is something new which is removed as if it was a bad decision
