Hey guys I'm new to Unity and was exploring the idea of using Vue for creating Terrains or Plants to use with Unity.

Has anyone tried this or has any suggestions?

I mean... I like the terrain editor in Unity, but it does seem limited in comparison to Vue's capabilities.

Now, the other part of this question is:

If I were to bring in a Terrain from a Third Party App, can I still use the Terrain Brushes for adding trees and such in Unity?

    or,

Do I have to create a Terrain in Unity to be able to use those tools?

I dont think its a very good idea. Vue creates terrain and plants using million of polygons. (one of the reasons why VUE renders are pretty long) Not something that could easily put into real time engine.

Its like using Zbrush models for real time engine. Its not gonna work.

Vue can generate heightmaps that you can import directly into your unity terrain.

    Vue is great for skydomes

    Thanks for the replies!

Do you have any suggestions for creating any kind of vegetation for Unity, some sort of engine?

Most of what you want is possible. I do the same with Terragen 2.

What you definitely want, though, is to use game-engine optimized models for trees. But Vue will probably allow for a way to export a distribution map, like Terragen 2 does. Then you can simply splat the trees over your terrain (advertisement: I've written tools to do that, see footer).

And yes, after importing your heightmap from wherever you made it, you can use the Unity tools to edit the terrain, place or remove trees, etc.

Thanks for sharing your links, I will look at them later tonight.

Do you prefer Terragen to Vue?

I've never worked with Vue, so I wouldn't say "prefer". TG2 is what I have and know and it's good for what I need it for.

For a game I made once, I used United States Geological Survey digital elevetion map information that I converted to a heightmap using Vue. If you do decide to go with Vue, when you export your heightmap
    1. double the size. that is 4096 if you want 2048 and so on
    2 export png
3 import into photoshop halve the size back down and export to raw.
That's what I had to do for some reason Vue would jack up the heightmaps.

I have attached some scripts that will do binary file connection with vue.
VueMenu.cs for unity in Editor folder
    +terraintobin.py and dat2terrain.py for vue.

this allows very quick workflow between vue and unity.

this was done on a mac so you may need to fix the / \ for windose
