    Heya everybody,

Unity's UI looks "okay-ish". It doesn't strain your eyes and it gets the job done. However, I absolutely hate gradients and decided to try and make it a bit flatter and simpler. I used their signature colors: deep blue and white. This is the launch screen:

    Now here's the UI itself:

    • Useless elements are removed. We don't need a "create" button somewhere on top of the "files" category when we already have faster ways to create an object (right clicking).

    • "Files", "Edit" and other menus are inside Unity's UI itself. Letting Windows control that stuff makes the dark theme clash with the top because it depends on your theme color on Windows.

    • Several things renamed. For example "Mute Audio" to "Mute." We already know what "Mute" mean, we can't mute the display, right?

    • Ignore the Inspector's component's settings as I was too lazy to finish them all.

Feedback is welcome! I thought about making a dark theme but I'm a bit tired of Photoshop for today.

    I wouldn't use that.

You do know that unity doesn't officially support ui skinning, right?

    • Background shouldn't be bright. Bright background is for text fields only. Using pure white is a bad idea unless you're trying to emulate some horrible xterm theme from early linux.
    • Buttons, headers and such should have clearly borders (which should be square).
    • Elements in transform component should form a proper grid. Misaligned components is disrespect towards your users.
    • Components can be closed/open and their header should refelect that.
    • Tiny drop-down menu on top right of every component actually has a purpose and removing it is a bad idea.
    • Little checkbox where you can mark your objects static is also absolutely necessary.
    • Anyone who implements "you're a loser" instead of error message should be instantly fired or moved to a position where they're not to touch any part of the program that is visible by anyone.

    But it does unofficially ;)

While I agree this is a bad idea, it's probably doable within Unity.

Concept - a general notion or idea; conception.

I never said that this was going to be a theme or something that should be made. It just how I would like Unity's UI to look. Yes, there are a few things missing, the error message is just humor and the tick for Static objects is there. You're taking this way too literally.

Well, what did you expect from a programmer?

Look, after a harsh lesson I learned in one of the first paid commercial projects I did - it was that when someone presents you a picture of UI, they usually want result to match the picture with pixel precision. And if this sketch is implemented with pixel precision, it will be unusable.

Speaking of colors I'm quite sure that background color in 2nd sketch is green and not blue.

The simplest way to convert unity colors into theme would be to use "white on blue" (white foreground, blue background) for buttons and panels and "blue on white" for stuff like textboxes.

Thank you, and yeah I should've made the background blue instead of white. But really, I just did this for fun as I've never done anything serious UI related. I don't want it to sound like this design is perfect. It's a mess and a crapload of stuff is missing.

That's pretty much the job of a UI. Form follows function.

If you want to seriously learn how to do UI design you should look for good books on typography, then for books on UI and UX design. You can make a lot of progress with only a few months of reading. If you just keep playing around, don't expect any significant progress anytime soon.

I hate F***ing flat square sh*t ui's, uninspired slop, google ms gui designers should go jump off a cliff.

"I thought about making a dark theme but I'm a bit tired of Photoshop for today. "

Why not just use mspaint? ...see look :D

I really don't want to learn UI design. I just did it because I had some free time and wanted to do some concepts.

Shh. If we tell people the dark skin doesn't really exist and that it's just a prank by the devs Unity will lose sales. :p

They should include an easter egg where on April 1st every free user gets the dark skin for a day. People would lose their S*** on April 2nd when it gets back to normal.

Many of those demanding the dark skin are making the statement that it will help their eyesight. So rather than providing them with the dark skin for the day, I propose they get a bright white skin. Something like the OP is showing us would be perfect.

Thumbs down. much of the 'useless' stuff is useful. Unity's layout is actually surprisingly efficient. Although the word "audio" after mute could certainly go and the create button is useless.

This layout would be a disaster for everyone except very, very casual users.

The typography is also horrible. You need clear columns, having the values 'inline' with the labels is going to make the entire thing look like a chaotic mess once you actually have a half realistic number of fields being displayed.
