I'm not sure why you'd asking what's going on, since the headline of the article spelled it out in so many words. Not hard to understand. Also nothing to do with selling the company; they've had rounds of funding before. (The article calling Unity a "startup" is kinda strange for a 10-year-old company though....)

Maybe I'm missing something, but it's right here in the article you linked:

They want more money to pump into making themselves more attractive to VR developers.

If they want to be more attractive to VR Developers they should update the Version of .Net they are currently using version 2.0. Money does not make you attractive is is merely a tool to help with that.

Here is my short list for things that unity can improve on...
    • Update .Net to a more recent version which could help developers much more than VR Support. We are still on version 2.0 btw which is a PITA to work with.
    • Invest more in the asset store so that Un maintained assets are taken down. Looking at Planetary Terrain V2 here among others...
    • Make Games - Not scenes that look good but actual games that can prove that the work flow is good and robust. Small games, Big games, Serious games, etc.
Also I am calling it now - Unity goes purely subscription based to maintain its current trend of growth or goes services based.

That's one of the eventual goals of IL2CPP.

I wonder if it would be worth revisiting the mono/xarmin lisencing thing again now that they are owned by Microsoft.

I'm sure smarter people then me have considered this.

    In other words, 0.6 * Minecraft or about 0.25 * Lucasfilms. :D

Investment based valuations are not really representative of the true value of the company, even if you take all the traction, growth potential, brand, stuff out of the equation.

Consider Unity has 0 cash and you invest 750m in the company for 50% (what will be reported as a valuation of 1.5b)

Now you own 50% of Unity, but its a more valuable Unity that you own 50% of. Its new value is:

    Old Value + 750m cash = 2.25b

(Or more realistically your 750m for 50% actually values the company at 750m)

I may have this wrong, but IIRC the license issues were only for Mono AOT which is being replaced by IL2CPP, so there's not much point getting a new license now. It would probably take longer to update Mono then it would to just port the remaining platforms to IL2CPP.

Probably. I know next to nothing of the technical details, just wondering if it had been considered.

    Really??

So are you saying that my company is not worth 100 billion after I sold a 0.000000001% share to my friend for $1?

Yeah, the article is very loose with the word "startup". Companies over 10 years old probably should not be called startups.

Can you find people to buy the remaining 99,999,999,999 shares? :p

I know. I stole the joke from Bandcamp.

We live in interesting times... a.k.a Minecraft is "worth" half of the Star Wars brand.
