It started yesterday — sometimes, for no reason, my PC reboots while working in Unity
There are no BSODs, crash reports or any entries in the windows event log
It just reboots like I press the reset button

Every time it happened, I was editing the same terrain
But I have no clue how terrains can cause it
    It might be a coincidence

I don't think it's because of overheating or PSU problems
I can play other games or run benchmarks with 100% cpu+gpu load for hours without any issues

    Any ideas?o_O

Every program in Windows runs in a different part of memory. It might be that Windows picks one particular spot to always load it into, and Unity could be in a faulty part which no other process, against all odds, has hit.

Or it could be a VRAM bug - perhaps you don't use all your VRAM, but Unity caches the heck out of things in its GPU cache. I dunno if it's possible to choose where in VRAM to start allocating, but if that's selectable (top/bottom instead of bottom/top) you could also hit bad memory with only some programs.

Games may also use far less memory than you think. They might be pretty conservative with RAM, while filling up VRAM to the max (depending on quality). Resource Monitor and GPU-Z might help in seeing some patterns of memory usage.

The OS should generally protect the system against overrunning memory in the wrong places (it's simply not doable unless you run a process as admin, and even then there are protections in place). Driver or hardware fault is usually the culprit with those symptoms.

Start with CrystalDiskInfo for SMART status of your drive(s). Full disk check and refreshing the Windows installation might also do some good.

I'm not sure it's because of memory — currently Unity is using 5 GB of RAM and 1.97 (of 2) GB of VRAM
And there were no reboots since I disabled that terrain, it's more than 5 hours

This has happened to me about 4 times in the past 4 months.
It occurred when using Unity (2017.1.1f1), my PC will just reboot. There is nothing in the Unity log file.
And going to the Event Viewer, all I see is:
The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

Finally I found a way to reproduce it without Unity
I ran Furmark's both GPU and CPU tests simultaneously
But it wasn't enough, it worked well with 100% CPU+GPU load without reboots
But when load changed drastically, it rebooted
And not only starting or stopping tests caused it
One time it happened when I closed Chrome with 10 YouTube tabs during a GPU test
So I went and purchased a new PSU
    Reboots are gone :D

The last time it happened in Unity, it was saving scenes
So they are gone too — their files are wiped with zero bytes :/

Same for me, Unity stuff, just rebooting my PC, unity games like KSP, LISbs, sometimes even Unity editor. More hardware intense games runs ok without such reboots for long period of time.

    Howdy all,

This is an old thread but it seems to me that I've got the exact same issue. I've been recently playing Valhiem and some other Unity based games and at random times the game will just cause my pc to restart.

At this point I've tried almost everything under the sun but the only commonality I can find is that it's caused by games that use the Unity engine.

I've run memory testing, checked voltages, checked pc temps and there is nothing that indicates a hardware fault, for comparison I've been running Cyberpunk on almost max graphics and never an issue. Just wondering if anyone has learnt anything new or if this continues to be a bug for people?

    Specs are;

    - Ryzen 5 3600
    - MSI B450 GAMING PLUS MAX AM4
    - G.Skill F4-3600C16D-16GVKC DDR4-3600 16GB
    - Nvidia GTX 1080

I am running into the same issue with the Unity editor. Randomly restarts with no BSOD, nothing in Event Viewer. I also do not think this is a power supply or overheating issue because I run games all the time that are way more taxing (my fans sounds like a jet engine when I play Overwatch)

What are your temperature reading for CPU / GPU?

Sometimes things just need a Reseating - Remove/Install, ie system Ram and GPU card. Just pushing in dosn't do the trick.

I have the same issue. Sorry for pushing a old post again, but I really need help.

Just like Amkukolja, I can run Cyberpunk 2077 4k on high setting for hours with no problems. But certain games that were developed by Unity AND Unreal are restarting my computer like crazy.

The fact that my computer runs high-end games proves it's not about cpu/gpu overheating or PSU being old.

I've tried removing and reinstalling ram, which I noticed that using only 1 piece of ram can help bypassing certain scenes of certain game. But it restarts eventually.

    Specs are:

    - i5-9600K no OC
    - Asrock z390 Taichi
    - Corsair DDR 4 2400
    - Nvidia GTX 1070ti

    - Intel m.2 500gb
    - Corsair 750w

    Games/softwares that reboot my computer:
    Wasteland 3
    Troubleshooter: Abandoned Children
    Little Witch Nobeta
    Metro Exodus
    Unity Editor

Games that have good graphics, but not restarting computer:
    Cyberpunk 2077
    Ghost Runner
    Dishonored

Okay... The problem was resolved. It was the PSU(being old?). The PSU was only 3 year-ish, plus the name Corsair. And it only restarts on Certain games. So I didn't think it could be the problem. But after swapping in a new EVGA 750, my pc rebirthed. No more Corsair for live I guess. They make everything in China nowadays, which obviously impacted the quality of their products. Farewell Corsair.
