So, let's be honest, having an engine for game development at $75 is still just cheap...

health insurance alone costs more than this just for one guy...

telephone and internet bills cost more than this...

Sure, as a budget tight indie, some people might want to save here and there...but you don't save money on engines...save it elsewhere...

Also, Unity has no royalties...NO ROYALTIES!!!!! and if this doesn't make much financial sense then I have nothing more to say...

so why is everyone freaking out on UE4's price change? I mean, they were charging money for something that should have been free all along...

And don't say that U5 is full of bugs, it is the same story with CE and UE...as a dev, you find your ways around and do what you have to do. That is what we do. If you are in this field thinking that a game engine will be bug free at any stage in time then you are mistaken. The only design software that is bug free is textpad and textpad only. Don't expect game engines to be textpad.

From a developer's perspective, the game engine is very very important, and simply more important than saving few bucks here and there.

Instead, raise the monthly price to about $100 and hire more guys to work on things that Unity needs more polishing. I pay about that much to Verizon every month anyway...no big deal but if this strengthens Unity, why the hell not.

ps. sorry if I am coming on too strong, but had to do this. I apologize if someone feels offended...

You could just send them $100 a month if you really wanted to.

Why would I? I am their client, I have no reason to. Also, be realistic. Any "realistic" developer understands that free or $75 is not the issue. Why? It's simple, there are other things that cost way more to develop a game, so it doesn't make any sense saying that $75 is a world changing price difference. Like I said, Verizon costs more than that...and that's the most fundamental cost to doing business... btw, if you are running a real business and have important people calling you, I suggest you go with Verizon.

If anything, they need to lower the price. There community is mainly indies, and we can’t afford $75 a month, especially when Unreal is free(Im not trying to start a fight here), so they should really change there pricing to match up to this and try to stay as a valid better option

I would like to be more careful here, since everyone's financial status is not and can't be the same, but having trouble financing $75 a month has nothing to do with being an indie. It just means that one is not under the conditions for developing games. How else are you paying for your hardware, utility bill, software licensing if $75 is a problem. Unless ofcourse, if the term "indie" is not what I think it is.

Care to share why? I mean, if this is about UE4 going free and Unity5 not, I think it is really unfair to say that increasing the price for better support and dev pace is strange. I am trying to say that rather increase the quality of the product and the price. I am actually surprised that no one really agrees with me here. I mean, as far as I know, most devs buy stuff on asset store anyway to test, prototype and materialize concepts constantly - and I personally spend at least $50 or so a month extra - so I am actually finding it hard that people are this sensitive to price. And I promise you, I am not well funded and consider myself on a tight budget myself.

And lastly, UE4 is not free.

In all honesty mr. tight on your budget it looks like you need to spend less time in the forums and more time creating. Quit making noise.

See, I believe that we talk on forums for the sake of sharing ideas and establishing constructive criticism and hence the mutual respect to keep the topic at hand clear and to the topic. It would have been far better if you'd presented a solid point rather than being a condescending responder. I would rather say no more as I actually need to go back to work and that no one is really ready for a discussion. Good night.

jjejj87 joined on February 2nd, 2013 and has made 10 posts. That is 760 days ago which means he averaged 76 days between posts. You, charmandermon, joined on December 4th, 2011 and have made 263 posts. That is 1186 days ago which means you averaged 4 and a half days between posts. You have made almost 17 times as many posts as the person you are criticizing because you don't like his stance on pricing.

Maybe you should take your own advice.

    I smell a troll.

We just made a lot available for free, why would we raise the price?
