After Unity crashed I get this error: Serial has reached the maximum number of activations....
The provided help and information is useless (old or not working). The solution from here: https://support.unity3d.com/hc/en-us/articles/209019666
also doesn't work (see the comments there)

The Christmas holidays are coming and in order to get the game finished in time I need Unity working! I contacted support and opened a bug, but they are not responding!

I can't believe that with the new subscription model there is no way to return an activation! Returning a seat and reassigning it doesn't work either...

Hey, I saw the other thread with the same issue and pinged the Support team about this. Hopefully they get back to you soon!

The cause is that sometimes when a machine does an automatic OS update it can change the machine ID and Unity thinks a different machine is trying to activate on the same license. Unfortunately at this time it isn't possible for a user to return their activations online, which is why for right now contacting support is the only way to get it fixed.

If you are interested in using a different machine or looking to reformat your machine which Unity is activated on, you can return their license within the editor.

Returning your licences within the editor:

    1. Open Unity
    2. Click "Help" or "Unity" for mac
    3. Click "Manage Licence..."
    4. Click "Return Licence"

    Hi Sara,

thank you for the information. Support did release the activation and I can continue working.
Is it planned for the users to be able to release the activations online?

I know this is a few months old now, but I would like to know this as well. I actually did release one of my licenses via an installed Unity instance, and it still didn't relinquish the license properly, although it did prevent that instance from working anymore, so I am stuck w/o my secondary work computer for over two days now while I wait on support to answer...this is really unacceptable.

Wow, this is really not cool. I just ran into this after a Windows update. It's almost 18 months past, and while I was able to revoke and re-assign my key via the Web (which I would assume should fix an issue like this), I wasn't able to use the license again and have just contacted support. They better reply fast. DRM that punishes honest users is not acceptable.

For a newer subscription, I don't think that will do it. Go to Unity3d.com, log in with your account. After you log in, click on the orange circle with your initials in the top right, and click Organizations. Then on the left side click My Account, followed by My Seats. Then make sure you see your subscription license, and in the bottom right click "Remove all my activations".

Then launch the Unity editor and add your license again.

I have no idea why the link from the editor takes you to the legacy page for your old 4.x/5.x perpetual licenses, nor why they decided to move the new licenses to a completely different part of their site for doing the same thing.

Awesome, thank you so much! Unity support has not replied, yet, seems they "aim" to reply within 5 business days. That does not help in a situation like this.

To be honest, I wasn't even aware of the "My Seats" entry and looked for a way to solve this via Organizations / Subscriptions (which is where I usually look up my serial). This is pretty cool because "My Seats" not only has a Web based interface to reset activations but also a way to access my old perpetual Unity Pro license for up to Unity 5.6.

Yeah I only found out about what I posted after I sent my own support email that hadn't been acted on immediately either. Nothing against the support team, I was just too impatient and determined to find where they were hiding it on the website :p Took me about an hour of digging around before I stumbled on it, since it really isn't in a logical place IMO.

Old thread but still valid. Unity licence manager erroneously reported I'd used up two licenses on one machine. Bug in licensing I imagine as no hardware or OS changes, just ran some Windows clean-up routines. In my pre-June-2016 license I found this from a Google search (the above instructions don't work in my account console, maybe they've shuffled things around).

    https://id.unity.com/en/serials

Can revoke seats from there and start again. This thread helped as it made me realise it can be done online. Couldn't wait hours to get my license activated, let alone up to 5 days.

I have an old Unity Pro 4.x licence. But this solution does not work for me.
I can enter my serial and see the licence, but i have to button to activate/deactivate it...
If someone has a solution?...i cannot wait 5 days...

On the id.unity.com. On the left hand side you can see the "My Seats" (it shows on your screenshot too), click there, in theory you can add/remove usage there. Remove your seat and register again through Activation.

Sorry, in this case I'm out of the ideas, you probably will need to wait for the Support. Which can take a while nowadays, all these pandemic and all, they are slower than usual as well, as far as I know.

I got answer from unity, but i do not know if it is a JOKE or not...??!!!
Their server do not authorize me to use my license (that i bought!!) and they tell me that i have to pay for the newest one....really, this is how you deal with one of your oldest customer?!

We no longer support Unity versions lower than Unity 2019.3 except for Unity 2018.4 LTS (long-term support) version.

Please update to the newest stable version here:

    https://unity3d.com/get-unity/update

Or update to LTS (long-term support) version here:

    https://unity3d.com/unity/qa/lts-releases

You can read about the differences in these versions here:

    https://blogs.unity3d.com/2018/04/09/new-plans-for-unity-releases-introducing-the-tech-and-long-term-support-lts-streams/

If your problem still exists after updating, please submit a new bug report and we'll investigate for you.

    Hey everyone!!
For the ones that may still having this issue, if your pc had unity previously installed, go to manage license, manual activation, and go to the last step (first is to save your license request key), once in it, look on your computer for the unity ULF (Unity_v(your version).x.ulf) and load it in the "load license file to this machine" and it will work again without having to wait for support to do it
