On a Mac, the [command + ,] preferences, globals. Particularly the colours for the editor bothering me, they don't save, reverting to defaults each time I load Unity.

This doesn't happen on another Mac with almost the exact same setup, only this one.

Already checked Preferences files for permissions in the library, they're all set to read and write.

Is there some other setting or something else I need to do to ensure that settings are saved?

I'm also having the problem and did a complete uninstall/reinstall. Still happening.

This is happening to me and I don't have or use Rider. I keep having to change my External Script Editor back to Visual Studio and my preferred Playmode Tint every time I open Unity.

I just opened another project, changed those same preferences, closed it, and reopened to find that the changes were not saved. Additionally, something else that has never happened to me before was when I've added a project to the list in the Unity Hub, it wouldn't replace the project that was already there. I only had one project on the list, then tried to add another, but it replaced it instead.

    I'm using a Mac with:
    Big Sur 11.0.1
    Unity 2019.4.20f1 LTS
    Unity Hub 2.4.2

This is happening for me on Linux (Pop_OS 20.10), though, I do use Rider. I have to keep changing from VS Code to Rider and various other settings each time I open any project.

I was having this issue on Windows 10 with Unity 2021.1.5f1.

I was able to resolve this problem by ensuring that only the Visual Studio Editor package was installed. I had to remove Visual Studio Code Editor from the Package Manager.

It's not definitive, but it seems like having any combination of code editor package installed VS/Rider or VS/VSCode, etc. is causing this misbehavior.

    Hope this helps!

I second that. 2021.1.6f1 has the same behaviour. It reverts back to "by file extension"
I managed to deal with it by closing Unity while "preferences" window was still open. That saved Visual Studio as default editor for good.

I had this same problem with Unity 2021.1.19f1, and closing Unity with the prefs window open did *not* fix it for me. The problem went away after upgrading JetBrains Rider a few days ago (circa Oct. 2). I don't have the version number handy right now, but it was the latest as of that date.

I've been having the same issue in 2021.3.4f1, and it was creating a LOT of problems as I was trying to work through a list of various tutorials. This seems to have worked for me.

Seconding this, can confirm this works. I have both Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code installed.

    Win10, Unity2021.3.11f1. Same issue.
My solution: remove VS Code Editor & VS.net Editor in package manager.

Here we are, end of 2022 and the same problem is here from over a year ago. Remove VSC and Rider plugins to fix.

By making sure that only the Visual Studio Editor package was installed, I was able to solve this issue. The Visual Studio Code Editor had to be taken out of the package manager.

Yes, closing Unity 2022.2 while the preference window is open finally save Visual Studio.
    Weird, but it works.

I found that my preference ONLY saves if I close Unity while the preferences window is open.

Happy new years everyone! I can still confirm the issue partially on 2022.3.12f1, but it seems the settings save when I close Unity, regardless if the preferences window is open. The settings do not save when the editor crashes though, something we're all very used to. I'm on Ubuntu.
