I think the insiders are well aware of the concerns of the community. These issues have been hashed out from all angles for nearly two weeks. A bunch of rando engine users wouldn't improve the communication. And I'm sure they're also talking to actual studios, not just insiders as well.

    Revenue is not profit.

Let's say you spent 90k to make a game, for example. You got 100k from sales. Your profit is 10k. Your revenue, however, is 100k. So. 10% of that is going to be 10k. You give it away, and your profit is zero. Taxes may apply on top, and then you'll end up in red, owing money.

Unity had plans to reduce the amount of offices world wide by 50% and flatten the management structure some. This could be fixed in theory if they get rid of the middle management slowing things down to a crawl. But it seems cultural at this point, the teams develop in closed off silos for years and then launch some MVP that is not compatible with a dozen other Unity systems as is tradition.

Why would anyone go with 10% from Unity when 5% from Unreal is right there then?

I don't know what she does in terms of games but Freya has an asset on the store that looks really good.

My Goodness, PanthenEye, another gem of a comment. Your posts are so thoughtful and insightful.

@Unity: If you are listening - or you there, yes you writing an executive summary of the revolting masses for the Unity C Suite, get this PanthenEye person on the Insiders group. If you can convince them to participate, we would all benefit.

First of all, it is important for us that the new fees (revenue share or other) are only valid from Unity version 2023 or higher! Unfortunately, we would not be able to afford the 4% revenue share - but with the next game we can then prepare to it.

profit share would of course make even more sense in mobile games, where you usually have very high expenses (ad spend,..) for new installs.

Not just bias they have a vested interest in not upsetting Unity and their job description is literally to promote Unity by acting as influencers and providing teaching resources. I have nothing against them. They just are not representative of indie developers. None of them are making a living by selling games. They are also all solo devs.

I could see how Unity would call them "the community" but in reality they not even close to that.

What is funny is all this eager waiting for announcement should be for some huge feature implemneted into the engine like Nanite :).

But now we wait for Unity to unfuck themself :)....

You might want to tell them if they pull their assets, they'll be potentially blacklisted. Like they don't trust Unity, no one would want to do business with a flighty entity. If they leave their assets and support existing users, but branch out to do new stuff in Unreal, etc - then that'd be more tolerated than screwing their existing users just to say FU to Unity.

Anyone pulling assets is likely done with this engine though so I don't think it's a problem.

I am sure the Unity execs are working on a cloud-based tax preparation service, UnityBooks, with "helpful" automated features that track developer revenue on a real-time basis and "allow" us to pay Unity install fees on schedule.

Disclaimer: I just realized this post is so close to what they're doing that I have to write in this disclaimer that this is a joke.

just to confirm, only games that exceed 200,000$ in revenue and 200,000 installs for the year qualify for the fee, right?

Revenue is last 12 months, installs are lifetime per project, not on a company level.

I mean it's nice that they're there to talk 1 on 1, we've collectively said our piece. They both seem to be critical of the changes especially Freya. I'm actually a bit excited to watch this honestly. I have a some optimism about the situation.. Not to jinx it.

On the one hand, it's definitely critical that they actually do all of the i-dotting and t-crossing this time around. On the other hand, just tell us already.

The assumption is that the live stream will coincide with Unity announcement.

Edit: Just noticed has Jason has a poll asking if you're still using Unity.

On the other hand maybe management shouldn't be trying to ship it as soon as they think it's ready. :p

F***, it is better, than I expected. Apparently we will still have contract jobs in Unity.

Although on second thought, it is suspicious that they said Unity needs money ASAP, how would it run out until 2024LTS without it? I think they are planning to change this as soon as the pitchforks and torches get put away.
