Image a forum post where all users talk about is what other options there are to use, madness!

as long as people complain, they care - at least a bit. but the silence is working, i'm about to not care anymore. soon it doesn't matter what the outcome is. it will be too little too late.

Did you pay 0.20 to Unity for each one of them?

They (and public companies in general, I guess) aren't concerned with complaints. Unless the complaints leads to losing money, they have no incentive to change.

It's not. There's a rumor the next Halo game might use Unreal, but none of the existing Halo games do (it's a custom engine).

Talking to... where? This is called radio silence, not a conversation.
Same way as "retroactive changes" are not "perpetual license".

    Doublespeak?

This is unfortunately filled with a lot of inaccuracies that have already been addressed. Really just need Unity to come out with the official update so we can put an end to the madness.

Is it possible that unity decided to invite their insider team at the beginning of this to make sure they are under NDA regarding this? How freely were they able to comment on this? Just my usual tinfoil questions, no offence.

The changes were announced September 12th. I guess they could care less that they've ruined there company after 8 days of very little communication and all the "confusion" (tm)

    I wish...
Not even using Unity for my main projects anymore but still can't work because I doom scroll this thread and Twitter to see if there are updates.
There are semi-credible rumors that X company might release something big VR-related and actually would've loved to use Unity for my VR project before all this.

This would imply that there was strategy, planning, and cognitive energy put into unveiling this nonsense. More inclined to think this whole thing got rolled out after a 3 am bender with the legal team and upper management.

Just can't english. They did invite them a day before(e:and made sure the insiders know it falls under NDA). My question is if this was part of unity's plan. If they were able to speak freely about it, I'm wrong and this is just conspiracy.

Right, we can only speculate. And it's really f*cking sad that we have to sit here and question why this destructive money grubbing shell of a gaming industry is enacting such debilitating policy in the dark.

In another world we're having open and constructive conversations, working together to create a great engine and platform, sharing suggestions, technical solutions, and taking in feedback so we can all benefit from making great games as we democratize gamedev.

This environment we've fostered over the years of NDA's, secrecy, suppression, monopoly, closed markets, is just so terribly hostile and stifled, it's destined to failure over a long decline so a few jack offs can compare yacht sizes.

Being in this industry sucks, it's run by manchild assholes who don't know how to share the toys.

    BREAKING NEWS: 12/03/2025

NIKE Inc's CEO John Riccitiello just announced his new magnificent brilliant policy that will apply retroactively. People who bought NIKE trainers from day one, will now be charged 0.20 per meter ever walked/run in the trainers they wore/wear.

Do I need to touch C++ at all when working with Unreal and can I make a complete game just using Blueprints?

If you mean Apple (I have no idea), they started talking to Epic right around the time the Unity news dropped (coincidence?). Anyway, here's the lowdown.

For $20, seems like a good bet to find something useful. Plus, there’s a LOT of tutorial material on the Unreal site itself.

It's best to use a combination of both. Most tasks can be done in Blueprints, but some will be much easier in code.

I think they may be waiting for Friday night, hoping that investors miss the news over the weekend. Politicians do the same thing with bad news.

Developers will react the same way regardless of when the news drops, but I doubt they realize this.

I suspect they've been talking behind closed doors with VIP devs and employees who have all, unanimously, enthusiastically told them that install fees are a complete non-starter.

The execs have then tried everything they possibly can to reword install fees and can't understand why different coats of paint aren't making the turd more appealing.

I don't anticipate their statement being anything other than "we apologise for confusing your tiny brain and promise this is better for everyone now shut up and accept it"

I agree and it's that kind of mindset that powered their decision to announce something so completely detached from reality that one could consider it a move by a Poltergeist.

They hate each other so I just assumed it's a nop by default.
Was actually referring to VALVE, but Apple+Epic is huge.

Well, if it's mild-paced, you are okay with blueprints, but it's not particularly performant thing.

David who? Because David Helgason is on the board of directors. He has always been. He voted for all of these.

Because they created an AI to maximize profitability, however, the AI became self-aware and then things got spicy.

Unity could monetize forum likes as a video game.

You can do top 10 anime betrayals and unlike people to make a forum like/unlike war, and get a bonus points shop for spicy avatars.

Unity you're not doing it right. Bring back Gigaya, invest.
Make forum likes mini-game for devs. Market. invest.

You gotta start thinking beyond installs.

I think you're mixing up David Helgason and Joachim Ante. The later (ex-CTO) is on sabbatical.

You do not need to touch C++ at all with Unreal. You can build entire games with Blueprints. Robo Recall was built that way. They then converted the Blueprints to C++ using an automated tool. Just a bit of a warning though they removed that tool with Unreal 5. There is effort by some one called Eren to add a "BP2CPP" tool to Unreal 5.

    +1 for the learning stuff on Unreal’s site, it’s a big W!
They recently also had a big push to overhaul their learning path with challanges where if you completed courses you got free Unreal merch and made it it’s own place also for community tutorials (like Unity connect if anyone remembers that but on steroids)

Just an addition to this but there is a Unreal Fest coming up in New Orleans. I think they will be livestreaming the talks as well.
