So... Another day, another bunch of companies that leave Unity. And my wife has left me for an Unreal developer. Everything's ok.

Hopefully will have an official announcement soon. And hopefully will not be something stupid in there this time.

Maybe the CEO and board think they're still dealing with consumers and not business customers. The way they constantly use the phrase "users" instead of "clients", "partners" or "customers" indicate that they don't understand what kind of market they're operating in.

This is what it's all about, making the open source option so good that the big engines (Unreal/what used to be Unity) should be fighting over YOU. They should be trying their absolute best to attract you to their paid options since you have a perfectly viable free alternative, instead of using their brand name as a platform to hit you over the head with. They should either be in the engine dev game because that's where the passion is or they shouldn't be in it at all.

The US government and military bans the use of all software from China. I'm sure a few EU governments and militaries do as well. Everyone else should take a hint...

Ryiah got it right, I'm just a software engineer who was trying to relay our management's position. That didn't go well at all (rightfully so). Besides, our original plan was full of flaws and plainly sucked, which people immediately pointed out and there was not much to add at that point.

I'll be staying away from threads like these from now on and keep to technical discussions as that's what I actually know how to do.

Be prepared for an annual increase of this new runtime fee:

"On an annual basis, we evaluate and adjust pricing across our product portfolio"
I really don't know what unity management is thinking, but as long as they stay with those retroactive tos changes, no serious business will ever work with them again

Unity should know that everything but going back to the previous status will explode inside them. Enough of changing rules while playing the game (never better said).

We've all witnessed over the years what crappy positions they've put you guys through. I'm as guilty as the next for venting frustrations on the wrong folks there at Unity.

Truly sorry for the situation you have all been put into.

I think a few more of us ought to realize you guys are in an even more complicated and ugly situation than we are.

Fingers crossed that 'management' figures it out for the lot of us, though it will be years of Post Traumatic Unity Disorder with anti-trust for years to come even if they do.

As someone who has just reached the pinnacle of diligently learning C# and the Unity game engine for the last 4 months I am aghast, frustrated and upset to find that instead of looking forward to putting together a game I am now on an unforeseen quest to source a different gaming engine due to the sheer greed of your company.

Goodbye Unity, it was fun while it lasted.

I think it worth to listen to people from often forgotten or smaller places (in terms of game development) as well, how this whole debacle influences their lives.

5 years of the engine stagnating, 5 years of billions being wasted on pointless acquisitions that don't improve the quality of the Unity3D Game Engine, the Editor or our experience as game developers. What a failed and missed opportunity by this company and the people who have invested in it and their executive leadership.

Clearly you've done an incredibly poor job as a company Unity Technologies, or Unity Software Inc, by never achieveing profitability or breakeven. Being down 82% from ATH for your shareholders, and 50% since IPO. You've lost money every quarter. Unfortunately, I'm not an accountant so I can't estimate how terrible things are but they certainly don't look great.

You're taking every developer who has built their foundation, livelyhood and future on this engine down in flames slowly but surely. What a sick joke. This runtime fee is just the start of the icing on the cake.

Remember guys, Unity is just playing for time, waiting for everyone to calm down, so that it can continue with its B.S greed as usual. As JR said "this is a fundamental change to the business model" and there is no going back according to him.
So I say, move over to other engines but still keep pressure on unity, just to make sure UE and Godot gets the message that we are fully willing to sink GREEDY companies and jump ship due to IDIOT CEO's.
    F*** you Unity

I like the idea from the video that this might lead to better programmers who aren't picking up bad habits from Unity. I don't know if it's a realistic idea but I like the idea.

This is disastrous for many reasons:
    • Invading the privacy of end-users (gamers).
    • Encouraging studios to delist/remove their old games from stores to prevent installs, instead of leaving them for all those players who still want to experience them.
    • Encouraging DRM.
    • Hindering game preservation and leaving no good option for developers who want their games to last forever and have continued relevance for decades to come.
    • Causing complications and additional work for developers in events such as free giveaways, malicious "install-bombing", and simple piracy.
    • Adopting a "guilty until proven innocent" model of putting studios on the hook to pay for the actions of their users, and thereby pay for all game installs, even in the event of piracy and malicious "install-bombing", unless they A) discover that this is going on, and B) engage in a process with Unity to try to prove that these installs are not "legitimate". This puts all of the onus on the studio, which leaves smaller studios extremely vulnerable due to lack of funds and staff to actively police this sort of thing. For example, Youtube is infamous for its "guilty until proven innocent" systems that force creators to jump through hoops to reverse automatic erroneous decisions. Just as DMCA and copyright claims are falsely used by bad actors on Youtube to create work and massive problems for creators, the same will be true of Unity's install-fee system.
    • Discouraging studios from publishing on platforms that support gamer's rights, game preservation, and DRM-free games, such as Good Old Games
    • Creating a completely opaque, "just trust me" billing system that does not permit studios to check that the billing is correct, and no means to argue that there has been an error or problem, because "the data model is proprietary". If there is a dispute and Unity decides, "No, this is actually correct," then the studio has no way to verify this - Unity can only say, "Trust us. We checked. You can't check, and we can't tell you how we know it is correct. Just trust us." This is a terrible idea. This is entirely unnecessary and over-complicated for what it wants to achieve (which is essentially a form a revenue-sharing), and creates an environment of uncertainty and doubt for unity developers, with no real means of budgeting or predicting bills. This makes developing with Unity extremely risky.

I'm also interested to know why Unity's users were not even consulted about this massive change that renders the usage of their engine extremely risky - Why not have a consultation process by sending out surveys and directly consulting with major stakeholder studios instead of just announcing this change out of the blue like it is definitely the way forward? Now Unity has caused immense damage to its reputation and fractured its user-base, and will no doubt create an atmosphere of uncertainty and doubt around the company and the engine when it inevitably reverses this decision in light of the massive problems. This enormous mistake was entirely avoidable. It's just bizarre.

There is a much better solution:
A much more reliable, clear, and consistent system would be to change it from "install" to "transaction" (e.g., sale), and offer to use a percentage that caps out at the maximum specified by your flat fee: For example, a sharing of 1% of each transaction, or a flat fee of $0.20 per transaction, whichever dollar value is lower (in other words: 1% of each transaction up to a maximum possible fee of $0.20 per transaction). This would help accommodate microtransactions in F2P games.

At this stage I just want an official statement so we can figure out where things are going from here. They never had leaks about this year in the making process that I know of, and yet now they’re leakier than a sieve. Just release a statement already on the adjustments.

How about investing in your asset strore and buy out some crusual assets to make unity engine usable?
I mean what about your UI situation??? Hello??? Its 2023 over here!!! Ui based on game objects? Are you joking???
Half of it components not even work properly. UI toolkit for runtime when??? You do it for 10years already (not real number) and where is the progress?
Do i even need to start with the whole DOTS situation? No animations, no audio or ui support...
But guess what??? There are paid assets which solve this problems made by solo devs... What a joke unity... What are you even developing there??? You couldn't even release your game lol. I guess you just saw what a mess is your engine and just give up on that.
Oh wait there is more. If you browse some of the source code you can find GetComponent in updates...
    Whole 2D pipeline is unoptimized.
We still have bugs in engine since 2021 version.
And so on and so on...
And having all that you spend billions on third party assets for 0.000001% developers while 99.9(9)% of real developers is SUFFERING with your editor
The point is i guess ppl know that unity for the last years in a S*** hole and no one wants it to die and want to support you but not after all this clown fiesta from your CEO.

Neither me or you know who was fired at twitter , but from the look of it Musk made a lot of bad stuff there.
He is NOT a hero! Stop seeing him as one!
Why do you presume it fired the right people?!
You just make an assumption to make your argument correct.
Look I don't kwon how many where fired with a logical reason or not at twitter, probably not even Musk knows, but that was a s**t show and the fact that tesla stocks drop when he did that proves it.
He is a clown , he handled the situation poorly. Again don't make a hero out of a greedy corporate CEO !
He is no different from JR, he's only smarter, and can maniputale people better!

As for unity PR, you are right, It was a disaster and it's not the first time. They didn't learn anything from the previous problems/ This is very bad for business.
They are putting money in the wrong places (services) and the engine is moving very slow (ex: DOTS from what I was on unreal forum and features is behind unreal equivalent even is they had a 2-3 years advantage).

Regarding Twitter, in April, Musk admitted that 6,000 people were laid off there. We know he let his content moderation team and the entire legal department go. We also know, from Musk, that Twitter lost 50% of its ad revenue. So not good.

Okay, resuming the depressing topic at hand.

They're obviously not the enemy here, just employees, but to say that their situation is worse than ours, heck - even that' it's in any way comparable is completely baseless - switching over to a different engine after couple of years into the project that multiple people took part in and switching a job is not even close, one takes years of work when you cumulatively loose the time you've already spend and the time porting, the other takes few weeks, at most months, and you are still getting paid just the same if you keep continuity - not even close in any way, shape or form. (coming from someone who both works at a big corporation and runs a 'big' project).

I'm also curious about this so here we go: A table showing performance of major game engines on Steam according to https://steamdb.info/instantsearch/.

    Screenshot 2023-09-20 132342.png

Look like she has the point. Good old XNA is the winner here, while Unreal stumbling at the bottom of the table :d

People who still use XNA in Steam era (post-greenlight) are probably quite experienced game developers after all.

Looks like Unity is way beyond anything in the games count, as for quality is very relevant as greater numbers means greater chances for lower quality games.

If look at numbers Unity has 600 AAA rated titles, which is 6x more than the next best in Unreal with 100.

    Very interesting table

Imho this is just dumb. what does game rating have to do with the engine used? it makes no sense whatsoever.

Engines don't write stories, design levels, implement gameplay mechanics, or design characters. They don't do models, animations, sound design or compose music.

A game engine is just technical scaffolding. There's zero correlation between engine used and how fun and engaging a game is. For every amazing game done using a haphazardly put together crappy engine, there's 10 soulless, mind-numbing games done using a huge commercial engine.

Even if a game is bug-ridden and this affects the overall experience, 99% of the time it is due to game code, not engine code.

Same goes for programming languages, btw. A good game will be a good game even if written in Haskell.

Its sad the engine has alot of problems and for years are not still fixed!this is insane !
Its sad i invested alot of time, work and $$ on assets to read their changes as B.S over and over again.

Godot looks good enough to start a 2D project right now, especially with the upcoming features they're focusing on. I'd pick Unreal for 3D.

Flax seems pretty good, but without a larger team I can't trust it. They haven't even made the editor and examples into app bundles on macOS, so what sort of janky build system must they have? Too much effort when Unreal already exists.

One thing I feel this situation was totally missing. Responsibility

This is total disaster in every level of every dimension. And really, even I have been saying I support revenue fee, I feel like Unity should not utter even one word about any fee or money plan at least full whole year to take responsibility for the situation. Actually they should apologize by bringing up any discount and get the plus plan back with lower cost for at least a year

And make the CEO responsible for this failed plan. If he was not greedy and carefully craft the deal to not have a bad taste (rev share for only future version, something like that) this might just have very little impact and unity might be eventually in downhill, but not just crashing instantly like this. He should pay for this with at least half of his share for still staying in the CEO chair

Well, this is only just ranting of me. I know unity was not doing anything better at all. Only a little hope they change the majority of the board

I think at this point they're in check, meaning that their king will die in the next turn unless they do something, and it's their turn to move, but all moves will result in a great sacrifice or even mate later on.

They made too many bad purchases, bought too many white elephants, have too many expenditures, didn't focus hard enough on improving the software or making it robust, they cancelled their one project that they would have used to battle-test their new additions (gigaya), and so they desperately need money, cobbled together some stupid TOSes in an attempt to take on the big money from mobile market giants only to alienate Applovin' and the entire Unity community and their customers while never getting to realize any of the gains that their stupid plan was supposed to provide.

Now they can't do any of the things we would like for them to do in order to save Unity because their own stock would plummet (and it's already on the way down) when all the arms'-length investors who get all their info from Bloomberg learn how bad things actually are, and the people on the Board are themselves stuck in their own sunk cost dilemma and unable to save face. So I imagine that what we'll probably see is the gradual dismantling of Unity through death by a thousand cuts until the stock value is low enough for someone (possibly an even worse company) to buy up Unity.

Leadership appears to be in complete denial, thinking if they can somehow make the fee work they can save the company and themselves. If they had any inkling as to how screwed they really are then they would revert the whole fee structure immediately (the longer it hangs in the air, the worse the damage) and start working on the trust issue; you know, the thing that will actually kill the company.

From a game theory perspective, the decision making of leadership post-blow up has been frankly terrible. If I put myself in the position of a sociopathic Unity boss who is not too delusional to realize that the only way to save the company involves a change of leadership, there's exactly two options where I can still find a "win":

    1) Screw customers even harder. Unity is a dead company walking so there's no reason not to extract as much profit from it as possible while it's still living.
    2) Find a buyer. Unity can be led by a new group which is a prerequisite for restoring trust. The old leadership can gracefully exit. Maybe even collect a fat bonus.

Focusing all energy on somehow fitting this square peg of a fee structure through the round hole of reality via increasingly convoluted bolt-ons and carve-outs is about the furthest you can get from the game theoretic optimum. It's actually worse than doing nothing.

this could have been avoided with just one decision, just one little decision, not hiring John...
he is probably thinking "i'm the guy who everybody's gonna hate but i'm bringing money to the table... 4.4 billions or something like that xD"
