Never build your home where someone else creates and can change the terms of how you will live. As a developer you should always be agile and ensure that you broaden your skillset when possible.

    Unity is just a tool.

I'm sorry, but this is the concept of all countries, counties, cities, villages, and HOAs. It is almost impossible today to live anywhere without outside rules and influence.
The analogy stands if you translate it into development too. You have many corner-stones and basis of rules. You should rather carefully select which ones are yours.
Be ready to move a country if you stop being happy in the current one.

But yeah, it's just a tool and lately a toll.

The people who scream here in all caps and stuff just could not live with themselves if it turns out it was a bad decision to abandon projects and spend time with new engines xP

That feels highly unlikely taking into account that the engine side is only a fraction of Unity's revenue.

I'm not selling my few shares at least.

I have invested five solid years of full-time development into my game, I was considering adding Unity Relay servers to my game and I started a 2024 fundraiser and was going all in this year, now all my plans are on hold. it's not so simple as to just port to a different engine. The project I am developing represents like a $500,000 investment over years for me, and the community I created uses the tools I develop in a industrial capacity, I can't just abandon them! I was promised one thing and Unity changed their mind and now my business model is all F***ed up, I can't even code I'm way too distracted by all this, nonsense and greed.

I sure hope not. Because I have a lot of stock in Unity. And a lot of innocent people do. I am a former employee, and a lot of my future banks on the stock going up. Without it, life is definitely a lot more difficult. When one wants to hurt some jerks at the top, they often forget about the little guys, but there are tons of people, including innocent Unity employees, who are greatly affected by this.

Lack of understanding, mob mentality, and revenge porn. I also find it amusing to keep hearing that "OMG, it was uncovered they weren't profitable." meanwhile all financials filings clearly state it right on that Net Income line. Then we go to "investors are dumb, don't they understand!" Heh.

You can also use C++ in Godot through GDExtensions or C++ Modules.

Nobody knows, the thing is company was in trouble before and now put itself into even bigger, if it was hard before for Unity now it is 10x times harder. So how they will resolve harder problem when they could not resolve easier one...

ps never said our models are good in predicting ;)

Really hope you do not have significant percentage of your savings in a SINGLE COMPANY, completely irrelevant which one it is.
Already investing mainly in only one sector (like IT) is not advised. A single company is just insane.
In that case I would recommend selling.

For many of us, it's probably a bad idea to ditch Unity now. Stride & Flax & Godot are nowhere near a mature enough state to jump ship in 2023. If these 3 engines would unify into a single foundation and a single product, now that would grow into a Unity killer within a year or two.

something like this, people want decision made for them to avoid future responsibility, unity gone as company is perfect solution for many, obviously these people are not the ones who heavily invested in unity, the one who has a lot to lose dont want this to happen.

I never put a dollar into Unity stock. This is benefits. Stuff I rely on, because I've had a lot of issues that I needed to use my rainy day funds on. I had to sell other stock to pay for those things. And Unity is all I have left.

It doesn't mean I'm foolish for not taking a lot of it out and diversifying it. I'm sure you understand how vesting works... That prevents selling of the stock. And Unity employees can't even legally sell stock for most of the year. Our investment accounts are locked...

Maybe that's an argument if I paid into it, but Unity employees get benefits. And the benefits can be very helpful when we need money. Wishing for us to suffer to hurt Unity executive leadership is... an unfortunate position to take, and that's all I am saying.

I think people realise that at the end of the day, our feelings don't make a difference to the decisions made by corporations. They're going to do what brings in the most money full stop. The stock price dropping gives people something to point at and say "Look! Your decisions aren't just pissing us off, they're costing you money, too!".

People are happy to see the stock price dropping because they're hoping it causes the executives to change their mind - because it's one of the few things that actually might. Simple as that. Unity is a corporation first - not "our home".

Software projects usually don't work out too well "if you just throw resources" at it, so not sure about that, even if they were willing...

Things just need time. Hence why Unity is in dev for more than a decade to reach its featureset of today. Surely mistakes and redevelopment which a new company can circumvent, happened a lot during that time as well, but still it needs time. Not to mention that I heard multiple times on Godot "this reminds be of old Unity", referring to Unity 5 and earlier. Thus am not sure they can actually avoid many time consuming steps Unity went through.

And in the End, Community resources matter. Uningine seems to be very feature rich and solid, but there are just two digits of games with it on Steam because most knowledge is in an enterprise/industry sector apparently and not backend by many thousand YT vids and blogs/tutorials.

Tip: When you see filings on dispositions from execs/board members, always look up their compensation package. Just google their name "NAME compensation package" and you'll typically get an idea of how much stock or options they're getting that doesn't show up under said filings. You can get the info through other filings, but it's easier this way.

    For the above person:
"Marc Whitten made $16,203,891 in total compensation. Of this total $364,599 was received as a salary, $177,777 was received as a bonus, $1,872,993 was received in stock options, $13,776,598 was awarded as stock and $11,924 came from other types of compensation. This information is according to proxy statements filed for the 2022 fiscal year."

Most members will hold on to their stock options until they leave. Exercising an option triggers your capital gains and it can be a pretty hard hit while you're not given the cash to pay it (and you pay to exercise it). The direct stock awards are typically in the form of RSUs and will slowly unlock as sellable shares. You'll typically see a board member set up a vehicle to automatically dispose of an equal amount of stock since RSUs are taxable as ordinary income at time of vesting, which you pay regardless of what you do with the stock.

Well in that case would it to best hope for crashing stock, leadership replacement and increasing stock later on again? Because more growther with more trust, clearly not as much profit as basiclly recharging mobile devs, but more stable.

Regarding the burning and the firebrigade. Well, if a gamedev guy using unity just got slapped by unity's new policy, and his dad is the cheif fireman at the station..... Do the math. Personlly that fire brigade truck is likely not going to turn up.

I'm just saying, when you dirt all over your users and affect their livelyhoods, it runs deep.

Well, I guess I shouldn't brow beat anyone because I understand your thought process there. I empathize. I just hope changes are made without anyone unduly getting hurt, or anyone giggling happily as a city burns just to take out the mayor. That sort of thing. But maybe I'm naive and there's only one way for positive change to happen.

Only thing i can say is that you have unfortunately taken a significant risk by not diversifying it :/

Can you explain how I would have done that when I legally couldn't sell it? I will say that I don't really understand how the executives can legally sell it in periods where us peon's are locked out. I think it has something to do with scheduled sales that are scheduled before the locks are put on selling shares.

Understanding your position there totally. But when systems got to big and leadship has to change due to missmanagement and too many issues, things end in revolts, but these never go without any casualties. This goes for companies as for politics. We always just hope to get out of things better than before, and I estimate, or hope that nobody wants you somthing bad personally.

Something tells me that you don't actually do AI powered stock analysis, or you'd know to say "per share". And maybe English isn't your first language, but then I'd wonder which market you're analyzing - since they can work very differently in different countries. But thanks for the laugh

Sorry, I do get the context now. In that case you'll have to wait I suppose.
Since yeah, there are anti insider trading laws. Those do apply to the management as well. Hence how this infamous recent "sell out" was just about 5% of what Riccitiello still has in Unity stocks. He's only allowed to do such small, regular sales and since shares are part of "compensation", one is well advised to make use of the selling possibility most of the time.

I still have no idea how much we can realistically expect to pay per sale.....

What is a typical sale/install going to be? Games can be traded and installed years after being initially sold.

That sucks, and I feel you.

I've also been too p!ssed off to open Unity since this situation happened.

However, I've been HIGHLY motivated to explore other options, so thats what I've been doing instead.

Even line of code I write in Godot right now feels like a middle finger to Unity execs :D

All Danes or Archived people will be unable to pull the products from the Royal Libraries, in which case this is most likely illegal, under acts of blackmail and extorsion to try to enforce those. Even if it is not, you won't ever be able to collect on those, and more likely than not the industry will turn the backs to Unity, EVEN IF you come around, the damage has already been done. When my thesis is completed, I have used Unity for the last time, theres a larger network of people within the Danish Youth Association for Natural Sciences whom for nearly 2 decades have operated with teaching young people game development, and the last decade + a few years have been using Uniry3d... I know of Zero people out of the literal 100s who have been involved here who seems to trust unity, I know 1 person, but this person work at Unity, so i doubt this person is at liberty to be dissatisfied openly. I have only 1 comment left, and that is... I hope Unity's Board fires the CFO and CEO after destroying the company's standing and reputation beyond repair.

    Additionally:

I am not sure you understand... this won't fix it... the trust is gone... it will buy you a MAXIMUM of 5 years, before the industry will have closed the door on Unity and never use Unity3d again. At these rates it's CHEAPER to develop Godot with inhouse labour, or unify under a new common engine where a lot of indie companies will join together to fund and own their own common engine. Its naive to think that a competitive pricing will retain your partners, because they won't trust a thing you do.

Ya. It's nice to see David weigh in but I feel bad for him.. That was a personal post to friends on Facebook.. Don't think it was meant for public consumption although in his position I am sure he was aware of the risk and he didnt explicitly say not to...

Anyways, David, as a co-founder of Unity, seems more invested than the rest of the clowns at this cricus. I feel for him. Has to be really S***ty to see your baby go down in the most public and horrendous way. What Unity has done here is going to be a historic moment in indie gaming history.

ok I admit that was poorly phrased, I had just woken up and wasn't quite thinking yet.

The vast majority of unity users arn't 10 years deep, we're in and out from time to time, or just starting to learn, I've come and gone from using unity over the last maybe 7 years, pick it up for a few weeks and put it back down.

this year was the first year I actually wanted to try and make a game, I was 6 months into the project when this announcement came down, I'm pissed because I know unity well enough, but also I'm still early enough into the learning stage that I can hop to another engine.

This whole disaster just brings forward that we all shouldn't focus down on one engine, we need to have a second and maybe even third in our back pocket incase something like this happens again, not saying we should know the ins and outs as effectively as our primary engine but enough that we could if we were partially through a project shift to that engine with little lose of time.

So he hired ol' Johny to take Unity to IPO despite the engine being profitable according to numerous OG Unity employees. All the bullshit side projects that failed were also purely for pumping the stock and making Unity seem like an everything-engine. First it was ads, then RT3D, metaverse, Hollywood and now AI.

Their goal since that hire has been to make Unity seem more profitable than it actually is. And I still assume that this communication aligns with that motivation because they directly benefit from share value. It's all deflection and PR. And Helgason is no better than Riccitiello. Hi might've been a good Unity CEO once, but now he's an out of touch tech billionaire.

You then need to sell it now to make it even lower

And it regrettable to ask but why you don't sell it just the last week?

You need to cut loss the future immediately

Or in the other hand, you and other employee should have strike protest since the last week, before that stupid "Clarified" and "Apologized" which accused us being confused are came out to fuel out wrath

If unity stock are not crash, all the current leader and director are not being replaced, that was also all of us the developer, tons and tons of developer in the whole world currently, will affect by this bullshit. And OUR life will be a lot more difficult instead of YOU

I can see all of you didn't do any of above suggestion already, because you don't take this situation seriously enough, even this thread skyrocketed to 10000 replied in 3 days. People like you still thought that we will just ranting and your job are secure

And this is the bitter medicine people like you need to take

There does seem to be one thing you are potentially missing.

If there really are as many 'little guys' as you seem to think, then collectively you will represent a non-trivial portion of Unity stock.

You need to stop being so passive, organize yourselves, and use your block shareholding to influence the Unity board. Ultimately, the CEO serves the shareholders, of which you are one.

Apparently there are 200 000 developers using Unity out there. Not surprising taking into acount how there are over 100 000 Unity games on Itch.io and 38k on Steam.
So the 10k posts here can still easily be the loud minority.
Not to mention that a significant portion is the same figures posting over and over.

Also Tsibiski apparently was not even allowed to sell due to trading regulation from being a former employee.

The entire point is to create an infinite money hack, so whenever they need money all unity games will get a coincidental install spike out of nowhere and send out the bills.

    The entire pricing scheme is:
Hey, some dude somewhere in the world installed your game, gimme 0.15c, thank you.

Well, I do agree with you that the fact that there was no leak about this coming out way is surprising. I wonder how many people knew this was coming. They might have kept it to a very small group, so if anyone leaked they'd be able to find out who.
