Here's the thing. They're not in denial. They know what they are doing is wrong.

    They. just. don't. care.

Interesting. But three Change.org petitions calling to fire the CEO, thousands of devs publicly romancing new engines while enthusiastically sharing their progress in porting as well as the internet on fire with vids n memes all over the weekend might have had an impact too. Monday morning follows the weekend after all so is when it would show. All that could certainly indicate a lack of income boost, as you call it too.

But yes, could of been the tweet instead. I have no idea to be honest. Just speculating

If so willing to pay per install fee, you can volunteer when and if conditions changes back to norm or stay and enjoy the show. For F2P play this condition is impossible

If that's the case I would like them to just admit that the goal was never to "democratize game development" but just to make a ****load of money.

So AppLovin finally removed Unity Ads and IronSource from their distribution network. This gets ugly for Unity.

Exactly. It's just a small deviation at this point. Sure, it's not nothing, but If you look at the stock price in July, Unity has been in deep S*** for a while. No wonder they are trying a new pricing model (which we all agree they should... just not this one).

they know exactly what they are doing. and that's the scary part. it means even if they rolled this back, there will be something else to replace it. nothing will stop them making the cash they ear-marked for 2024.

I think that this is different, though. I'm assuming EA didn't change dev contracts to be retroactive and demand that they be the one source of truth for billing devs. Doing business in this fashion is like giving a monkey a machine-gun and hoping he fires it away from you.

Investor also not stupid enough to not know that, when there would be a chance for developer to hit 199990 download, they would just unpublished their game and prepared to fight in court for download number. Ads based game shutting Ironsource and unity ads then replace all with admob. Indy game might take only 199000$ revenue each year then release game for free

And the return of investment will be 0 for eternity because no one will start new project in unity in the long run

All the protest they all did for week are just glimpse of future in 2024 for unity. And if they just try to crawl back by buying their own stock, then that's better, because they just burn their money

I am guessing you have never worked on actual commercial games based on everything you are saying. You are so incredibly wrong, all major console games optimize things to a level where this performance is key, which is why most AAA engines are written in and scripted in c++.

It's certainly possible. There are stranger things in heaven and Earth, as they say. But I doubt its the backlash, personally. Particularly because the stock market didn't react in a notable way for the first week of the changes. It had a small dip which was likely smaller players dumping their stock based on the changes.

The big players held onto their shares because they don't really care what we think as long as they think the company will make them money. I've got no doubt that they notice the backlash, and it plays into their decision making - undoubtedly.

But what triggers their response is when they see a red flag for continued income generation, and that to me was the tweet saying the policy will be changing. And it won't be changing in a way that gets Unity more money, so it can only be the same or likely less. That made them click the sell button in my opinion.

We have to remember that the small and medium-sized Indie devs don't make Unity the lionshare of their money. Large corporations using Unity for non-gaming means make a massive profit. So when Indie devs threaten to leave, it hurts Unity's image for sure, but it doesn't inherently hurt their bottom line -> especially in the short term, which is what the stock market cares about; short term gains. They can always sell tomorrow.

Another possible factor is the "Collective" of developers turning off IronSource ads, perhaps. That happened over the weekend, or at least late last week. And the more that joined that collective, the more it would hurt Unity's bottom line; adding to the pressure on the shareholder's finger hovering over the sell button.

the investors still just see games still in the open, that make a S***load of money, and can not change their engine now, they would have to pay the install fee, aka freaking more money. They see that, not the games not made with unity.

Not only anal monetization but god damn engine updates too!!!
Many good projects in AA segment just died or switched engine to UE because of bugs, lack of promised features etc...
Stagnation is a real problem to let creative teams to make their best projects

Sooooo yea “we heard you” they’re going to give us a whole nother week to continue window shopping other engines.

in the meantime their stocks continue to drop and more and more devs and apparently publishers are shifting away from unity.

Sure, it's definitely different, but consider that the gamers furious over microtransactions and loot boxes are akin to us devs furious over Unity's new policy.

What actually matters is if we stay strong and stand to our word, and stay away. Clearly gamers did not stay to their word in refusing to buy EA games with microtransactions. Or all of them didn't. That or the majority of gamers didn't care that much to begin with, and a loud subset of gamers were the ones furious (which theoretically could be the same case here with Unity. Not as likely I think though, because our livelihoods are at jeopardy here, where gamer's fun and spare time were only at jeopardy before).

And the key here to having that impact is whether we all truly drop Unity. Because words are one thing. We can say strongly worded rebukes and that our next game will not be on Unity, or we will convert our current game. But if we try and realize its too much work to convert, or we don't like the new engine enough, and we come back to Unity, then we never really hurt Unity's bottom line, just their image.

And to that end, the stock market doesn't care. They care about the money. And they wait until it becomes clear that the money will truly be impacted before they sell.

This is the post from the last year (Yes, I just comment at 1 minute ago there) and it seem he is probably still in this same delusional. I bet he still think that John is good guy and respectable, so his plan is a great one for every people. The mistake is from PR team that make people confuse, something along this line

I'm working on Sea Power right now if that counts. ;) But yeah I have a strong C++ background coming from medical device industry, did C++ for two decades so I think I know a little bit about it.

And yes, there IS a benefit performance wise but I stand to my saying that you're doing something wrong if you need the extra few percents you gain with C++. This is a bit different for AAA studios and especially console development but honestly, those guys use their custom engines usually anyway. I thought we're talking more about indies here..

If their stock price crashing low enough, AppLovin may become their new board director, and first thing they would propose might be dissolving IronSource

OMG there are similarities between game engines and programming languages:

UNREAL is C++: Powerful but complicated
UNITY is C#: BEST OF BOTH WORLD
GODOT is PYTHON: Simplest but slowest

To be fair, Unity had not dropped that much more than a lot of the IT sector. It just had been too heavenly on the market for the last few years.

Godot has GDScript that are custom and Python-like but not a python. Also Godot support C# and can work with any language utilizing special bridges, but not out of the box except for C#.

I've only ever used Unity and C# (we don't talk about UnityScript days) and it honestly scares me to try and move to something new.

From what I can find, I hope Unity Asst Store assets are non-restricted and can be used in something like Unreal. Most of my purchases were 3D models and animations that I don't want to lose.

If u use Godot, try to use C#...Perhpas u wont translate it 1:1 to enterprise but knowing the language that is used in Enterprise gives u a soft fall in case ur game dev career fails ;).

I dreamed of beeing a full time game dev, but I endeed bing a dev in enterprise, with working on a game as a side gig ;).

I know some ppl who moved away form game dev to dev ops or enterprise, simply because game dev is the most toxic and abusive environment.

So having that option behind Your sleeve is always good.

Why would anyone be celebrating stock dropping at all? Unity is our home, it's on fire, we need the fire department not a celebratory dance

Reminder that we all only know what we see. The situation is bad enough as it is but circling around hate memes, pointing fingers at the shiniest thing in the room and writing in all caps isn't gonna help anyone here.
    https://www.reddit.com/r/unity/comments/16j23ci/i_know_people_dont_want_to_hear_this_you_shouldnt/

Everybody's frustration is absolutely understandable and justified. Still, blindly assuming that all of this can soley blamed one one and one individual alone without any shadow of doubt is irrational. What's written in the reddit post above may also not be the whole picture or even close. Who knows. We certainly don't.

What we as users should be doing are two things:
    1. Let unity know without a shadow of doubt what we now demand them to be the couse of action and no meeting in the middle ground this time around. Because any middle ground here is still a desaster.
    2. Asses everybody's individual situation and willingness to take action in case (1) does not happen. Whatever that acion may be.

That's all. Actions speak louder than words. Goes for unity - same goes for us, the users.
If the action means switching engine now, later, not at all, forming a group to go to court about it, ... that's individual. But it's rare that a company has a mess-up so loud that a seriously large chunk of people is really willing to drop the product. So use your power to decide what you are willing to do.

Because it is psychological defense, people dont like uncertainty, they dont know should they switch or keep going with unity, so subconsciously they want resolution even if this means unity's death

Written, yes, scripted? Big nooooooo. Non-programmers need to script games in any professional setting where non-programmers are involved making a game. This is the reason Lua's complete existence. C++ engineers made it to allow non-C++ people to be able to script the game. Or some used python (Civilization IV for example). Or, in case of Unreal, it's an idiotic put strings between ugly boxes.

In our company using AI to analyze stock market this is classical "Crashing" pattern, all our AI models suggest dropping to $10 per stock in next 2 weeks if unity keeps going forward with the plan.
