That logic applies to any software tbh. Quirks are just trying to figure out how it thinks. A lot of people get into the habit of not liking to learn new things, especially if its not something they are being paid to do. When software is intuitive, it just really means its familiar, so sometimes people seek familiar alternatives, not necessarily the best ones.

Blender is not as hard to get into as some may think, but arguably its difficulty and impression of UX will depend on the software you come from due to the level of familiarity, or lack there of. In my case I went from Maya to Modo and then over to Blender after 2.8's changes. By that time the UX was greatly improved, and with the industry compatible keymap, it literally felt like a mix of maya and modo. It gives you the basic hotkeys and expects you to add more based on your own preferences as you work, it also shines depending on whether or not you use addons. Paid addons are a must for any pro who uses Blender, and it speeds up the adoption rate considerably.

Ideally you stick with paid software for support, not necessarily because its better designed.

    This is getting interesting...

The only thing that could make me consider pausing my port is:

Fire current ceo and board, create new, concrete, and clear TOS preventing something like this from ever happening again, and then maybe. Maybe I’ll consider stopping my port. But the more I’ve looked into it, the more I’m enjoying Godot. So even then it might not work.

Unity better announce an exceptionally sweet apology. I’m talking a free year of Unity Enterprise kind of apology. And even then, that might not be enough for me. I do not mind putting in the effort.

I live for the grind. A port is nothing. Disrespecting my good will and trust… that leaves a stain. A stain that can only start to fade away with an exceptional apology.

Isn't what you describe just a nft? The patent list reads like a list of the stuff that was bought by unity over the last few years.

Thanks for this, if that dev can do this, then theres a...

well nevermind, apparently you won't be escaping Unity if the research funding charts were about creating infinite patent troll fuel.

This is the kind of behavior that needs to be put before Congress to decide if it's constitutional, this sounds like unfettered lunacy - changing terms of contracts for the sake of self interest putting developers at risk and probably other unlawful acts. Now we the developers are literally in real danger.

It is now possible we could owe Unity millions of dollars for just installs, even if I only make $200K?

What's to stop Unity for unleashing hoards of AIs to falsely install mass copies of Unity games to jack up install metrics? This is a F***ing scary time!!

I might still use Unity, if they back off, agree to set reasonable terms of service, or I may start helping one of their competitors as much as I possibly can and recommend to everyone I know they should also not trust Unity.

As one of the people that said this, yes it is perfectly reasonable to expect them to fire everyone involved pushing this thru because they fired a manager for a tweet that said the execs where out of touch just recently. What the execs did was far far worse. No, I don't think they will do it, or if they do fire some they will be golden parachutes. This is also why I think Unity is likely done as an Engine. They violated everybody's trust with something that seems to be quite illegal. How can we trust them if they keep on the same people that created this disaster while they fire people that criticize them? You simply can't. The company is rotten at the top.

Do you guys all remember the 237 page forum thread-of-confusion when Epic announced UE5 and their new pricing in 2020? They reduced the price, and made the price reduction retroactive for old games. At the same time they gave everyone free online services and free Quixel Megascans. What jerks!!

100% of these companies would very likely rather ban Unity games than pay a runtime fee, for existing games or future games. And I couldn't even be mad at them for doing that.

Of course I don't expect it. Still, it's non-negotiable at this point; them or us. No matter what we do, repercussions are unlikely. But the more we advocate the more we help our chances, so it's productive to advocate.

If there's a chance developers could be exploited or end up owing a few millions to Unity for selling a almost free game that gets downloaded 100 million times, I think it's necessary to go further than advocate, we need Government intervention.

you are too naive (that is not bad), that's why i recommend you to leave, 200k in revenue can be a dream for you, but what about 200k installs?

Wow, never would've expected such reckless greed from Unity.

Seriously Unity, after the greedy bullshit that tends to follow public companies, now I just can't imagine ever coming back. I was working on my Unity projects every day up until this morning till I caught up on all this news finally.

Thousands of hours since 2011... at least I've got a couple hundred hours of experience in Unreal which I feel comfortable transitioning to for my projects.

They're not moving to Godot, at all. At least not the professionals. Only the hobbyists/tourists.

The current terms are demonstrably more favorable than a 5% royalty (you're not "sharing" anything, you're giving).

Yeah I spent thousands of hours too and have around 6 months left in my project after years. But could make the switch to Unreal Engine. I have been looking at that now to check out the actual workflow and update myself on how far that has come since the last time I saw it..

    I’m so sorry ;)

I’ve been periodically looking at and bouncing off of Blender for actual decades at this point, but after all the dust-up here I figured I’d give it one of my regular reassessments (having some Blender courses in the current Godot Humble Bundle was also a motivating factor). I’m actually surprised by how much more like Modo it’s become lately, which is the tool I had been using until upgrading my Mac made it impossible to run the old version I’ve been parked on (701). Granted, I had my own huge learning curve going from Max to Modo, so those going from Max to Blender are undoubtedly going to have a similar issue.

And whoever added the industry-standard keymap deserves more than I’m sure they’re getting, though it does make it harder to follow tutorials that just assume you’re going to use Blender’s insane defaults.

Well, that'll be the final straw for me then. Kind of feels good to cut the cord. I'm so tired of trying to work around half-implemented foundational systems while they're bumping the stock price by mentioning AI a billion times and extorting their userbase. The enshittification of our digital world continues.

Just to be clear - the only thing people who read the policy properly are confused about, is confusion about how you could have possibly thought this is a good idea.
We understood your policy. It's just stupid.

Hello RaijuZappy, thank you, I see...... you could be very well on to something and, indeed, they can layoff who they need to...but, you did say, that they fired a manager that spoke 'against' the execs....so this is telling, it is telling, that Unity is protecting the execs. So, no, they are not about the remove all the very high-ups, they protect them...even, as you said, as far, as firing 'another lower manager/employee'..talking - against the execs. This demonstrates, that the execs are important/valuable to them..and they will not fire them...they fire any one below..who speaks against them.

Otherwise, they would not have fired that manager...they would have Agreed with him...and fired the execs...

Yes, golden parachutes..seems something they might offer...but, no, after you said that manager was fired for speaking against them.....to protect execs...no. Execs = staying. As, I said, they will most likely not change/do anything about them and they don't share the views of people on the execs...or they do..but 'it's the people they have to to do/deal with'...and these execs...are the execs...that are there; they are accepting them...'flaws & all' 'as package deal'...and will continue with them..despite all this.

Which, I know, many will not like...but, am sort of/near certain...nothing will have changed at end of week or later, and maybe they will fire like one lower but, yeah, not the very 'big ones'. I think, it has to do (mostly) with reputation and they will do, what they have to do....despite people 'asking them gone'...they could remove fees...remove execs? no...not happening. These execs are telling them- -- we matter, we run this company, you can't, we're not perfect, but we run this company since years...and, perhaps even, Unity feels their execs were unfailry 'targeted' and the 'targets' of targeted-attacks (public attacks) on them... public defamation. Unity does not like that...no company likes that.

They would also need to find new execs....I'm sure they could find new ones...but, the way I see it, they are protecting their execs....and, if that means, firing someone below them to protect them...then, that is what they will do. It's clear...to Unity, lower employees, are...lower in rank..and thus, can be laid-off....execs....far Less disposable, they are the Top. can't easily replace them...hence, why they stick out for them..even so/even after the whole 'selling shares/stocks/running down Unity/its value, to worth nothing as company'.

I agree with you, that trust cannot really be regained...but not much other choice...these are company decisions..and we have to roll with it...or leave. People can voice anger...Unity will put 'ear plugs' on....ignore us on that point. Be the ostrich, head in the sand, with ear plugs. They'll answer anything else...just not that. They don't want... Thus, the matter is settled...the execs...are staying. nearlty sure..(we need to, 'deal with it', with lack of trust; which seems crazy...but, I guess it's a compromise and a spin of the roulette/gamble...that we would trust this. Crazy,, I know (it's why I read some devs say: ''if you stay...you are crazy and you deserve it. you like pain and would trust anything/you are a oblivious -s*ck*r ..(for pain)''... Everyone would prefer, that it is trustful...but, alas, they are saying/implying: 'you will have to trust (us)...what there is, to trust... even you don't trust, anything of us'...it amounts to that. As such, it's a 'take it or leave it'...on the trust.). I know, it sound/is very ultimatumist...but, it comes down to that...execs; staying and
going nowhere (therefore, get used to it/them..). If they do remove them, then you were completely right...but my 2 c...
I don't think so, just by your example, of a lower rank employee getting fired for speaking against high rank ones. It demonstrates that jobs at the bottom of the rank...are far more..disposable. Jobs at the top...far less, disposable.
The top-end represents the 'running' of the company...so they have 'authoritative power/decisional power'...over entire company, its fate..adn the fate of the employees in the ranks below -- that are employed by the company; but, that the company may layoff..should it need to do it; to continue, as business. All companies, do this, the 'layoffs'...and, yes, it's sad, but it's nearly always the lesser (important) jobs (that can be replaced or completely removed with no effect; Unity has 7000 workers...people say it sufferes of bloat...too many/redundant...$$$expensive; there can't be a thousand execs...but a 1000 redundant lower ranked jobs yes...they will axe things there) they are affected the fastest...because, tehy are not (as) important to the survival, functioning, and proprietary/leadership/running/decisions of the company, its IPs/(c)/TMs, as the top ones are.

    > "We apologize for the confusion"

so users are confused, but i think its the management?

    > We are listening, talking to our team members, community, customers, and partners, and will be making changes to the policy

You said that the last time also (when unity made bad decisions or called us idiots etc), and before that and before that..

    Please re-read this page:

    https://unity.com/runtime-fee

"Runtime distributors will be responsible for paying the Unity Runtime Fee, which is calculated on a per-project basis."

"Games or apps with substantially similar content may be counted as one project, with installs then aggregated to calculate the Unity Runtime Fee."

    What?
