    Hello,
I am running into a new problem where I try to launch Unity, and select a project. Then, the window goes away, but nothing loads up, so I try to launch Unity again and select a project. Then, I get a window that says, "It looks like another instance is running with this project open." but I see nothing. Sometimes it literally almost takes an hour before I do see anything show up. What could be causing this?

    Thank you,
    Michael S. Lowe

If it was problem, I find a a systematic approach works best. Unity is executing a large list of things based on the folder you gave it. If that folder was an empty project - would it do the same thing? If it does then its an installation problem. If it does not then its a problem with your project. To work out whats wrong with your project, (take a backup first) the only thing you can do is to start taking things out of it until it does load. We know unity loads the scene last opened. Try removing that, or replacing it with an empty scene. If its still hanging, then its asset processing thats holding up - in which case you will have to start removing folders in the assets, and potentially cleaning the root folder of the temp files/shader cache/occlusion cache ect. If it still hangs, then use process explorer, and inspect the process and see what stack is sucking any cpu, or use process monitor, and see what resources its accessing. Go back to older version of unity and see if it loads in an older one, load an older version of the project and see if it loads. Try it on a different machine. Check the Editor log in C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Unity\Editor. If after all that it still doesnt load - become a butcher/baker instead :)

I just started having the exact same problem this morning... Start Unity, select a project, then the process runs in the background (editor never opens).

My version when this started was 5.6.0f3, installed version 5.6.1f1 to see if that would fix it but nothing. Even after updating, every time I open my project from 5.6.0f3 it asks me to update my project (I'm guessing it was never completing this step) and then the editor doesn't open.
Already checked my firewalls, Unity is still allowed.
Tried to open many different projects, none of them work.

The only thing I can think of is yesterday I made an edit in Visual Studio and out of the blue the Unity Editor failed to compile (never seen Unity do that in 5+ years using it). Had to make another random edit and re-save in VS for the editor to show my changes.

EDIT: I just did a full shutdown (I'm on Windows 10) and started my computer again, Unity Editor now opens. Seems to be working for now... I'll come back if anything changes.

Now, I have the problem where every 3 minutes, when I switch back and forth from Unity and Visual Studio, Unity freezes.
