    after reading this article:

    http://www.vfxworld.com/?sa=adv&code=319b255d&atype=articles&id=3096

maybe OTEE should concentrate on the mobile device industry for it's next build option... I suspect us indie developers would have better turn over for mobile games then trying to produce next gen games... but then again good shareware games that have been released on xbox live seem to be doing very well. But at least with mobile games we wouldn't need the middleman (microsoft, sony or nintendo) to veto the games before release.

Plus I suspect java and open gl for mobile devices might be straightforwrd to support...?

    cheers.

It would basically require a complete rewrite to Java.

all cellphone games I've heard of are custom coded, practically from scratch in order to squeeze performance out of them.

One day cell phones will all run Linux and have a better GPU than today's Mac Mini. We may have to wait until then :)

Today's Mac mini has a pitiful GPU. It can't even do anti-aliasing.

But that's just a nit-pick. Your point is valid.

In the future, cel phones will project holograms while accessing the cyberweb with speeds in excess of 43Mbps. Also you can control them with the Power Glove (sold seperately).

i heard in the future of cell phones will not exist as we know them, instead there will be a network of people shouting really loudly. Does anyone know if this system is expected to support Java games?

If by Java games you mean throwing coffee in people's faces for sport, then absolutely.

Sounds like multiplayer support will be a distinct possibility.

Well, most state they run 'Java' (which I suppose would be their clean room implementation) but, you don't really need Java: Most of these now browse the net reasonably well - If the quality settings could be tweaked a plug-in might just do.

    Cheers,

    Luis.

The problem with mobile games are the mobile devices. The screen is small, the steering is awful and be prepared to get mostly the same games over and over again. Beside of that mobile games can be good for making money if you're into it. I don't need them...i even don't need a mobile phone.

    >>i even don't need a mobile phone

well i can agree with that - wish i didn't have one! :D

the big prob with mobile games is there are sooo many different phones and all of them have different screen sizes and kinks. you think porting pc to mac etc is tough? try sony>ericcson>nokia>motorola>lg>samsung>and on and on and each has 40 models! yeah it's a big headache for $1.99 a game. guess if you sell 50 million it'd be ok though.

One solution is just to do contract work and let others deal with the troubles...

This was a nice market some years ago. Now a noticeable percentage of the production has gone to eastern countries. I remember some weird guys running around on the milia.

Maybe this will be interesting with he right hardware and concepts with a clue behind. At the moment it doesn't look interesting to me.

contract work means working for someone. nah. i'd rather eat dirt! (or zombies!)

i think it's still a nice market. maybe outsourcing's gone east but there's a lot of large players (ea, gameloft etc). and the $1.99 instant play model is attractive. in the u.s., girls are buying them pretty strong.

2d-ers are really easy to make and that's a plus. i never got into 3d on them or brew. just some realitively simple java. if you could get hooked up with a major carrier it'd be worth while. think the big guys are making that pretty tough nowdays. but a good game is a good game. i agree though it's not for me either and i'd still rather have shadows in unity. ;)

What's the problem with contract work for ya?

I've done very nice contract work on projects where i otherwise wouldn't have had a chance to work on and which were a lot of fun. Most of the times this work is much better payed than doing your own stuff if you're not going to write a killer. There is also contract work which sucks so like almost anything else it depends on the case. I'm glad i can do it.

    Ah okay... :O)

Maybe the key is to do both. This way you'll learn to love payed contract work but on the otherside also can enjoy the pure pleasure of doing your own stuff.
