Unity likes its Log files Beefy

5 minutes ago my windows started shouting at me that my disk space was finished,
low and behold, a glorious 0kb of disk space remaining, no good at all..

Windows then proceeded to open their storage managing page within win 10 settings - to which i starting digging for what program has gone r/softwaregore and has eaten up all my space.

Now i'm yet to find the cause of 20gb spontaneously missing, However.. in my searching i did find this Glorious 11.1GB Text file accompanied by yet another Glorious 6.3GB Text file under the Unity App Data Directory!

After saving my work, i prepared to open said texts and watch Notepad freeze my workstation, but i was surprising but yet sadly taken back when this happened:


Yes, these are Log files.

I did notice that this log file is growing in the hundreds of megs periodically. 200mb in the time of me writing this post! without any use of the Editor

Why it is happening is certainly linked to what is in the log. You probably have an error that is repeating. Use a better text editor than notepad. Maybe vi or something.

 

VS and sublime won't open it, makes me doubt other text editors will. If the error persists with future Unity updates, ill then look into it further

 

Try

Get-Content yourfile.log -Tail 100

to view the last 100 lines of the file

 

You could just delete the log and reopen the editor. Then just open the log file before it grows to an unopenable size.

 

If storage is at a premium you should also delete older betas you may have installed, these are a few gigs for sure

Update: Deleted the Log, Reopened Unity, and the Cache Server seems to be the problem, With endless lines of Cache Errors

Update 2: I used the 'Clean Cache' option within the Editor and all is good, problem is gone now

 

Yeah! i prefer to keep my builds, but symbol files are quick to get the boot
