    Hello,

I want to share this with you guys, I'm having a lot of free time on afternoons so, note that this is not a suggestion or a propose, I think the Unity interface is already perfect the way it is, I just like to design stuff! :)

ps.: there may be some typos.

Character.prefab is the prefab opened in its own space, where nested prefabs can then be logically added to it? You're making us cry.

    Thank you guys!

Yes, I was thinking about something like this, that would be very cool, right? Also, if you have extensions like UnIDE or Shader Forge you would be able to edit your assets on different tabs with its own layout scheme, I think that would be very nice too, well, it costs nothing to dream! :p

I came here expecting a rant how the Layout sucks and how it should be better. Also, I expected a sub-par design that made things worse.

I am actually pleasantly surprised and I really like this. This makes unity feel somehow more ... sleek. :)

Its like UE4 and Unity UI merged, its beautiful. With the simplicity of the Unitys UI and the helpful component of UE4 scene tabs, I would love to see this done!

Well, not from UE4 if that's what you're thinking, the look and feel (from the top most area of the editor, since is the only part that significantly changed) came straight from photoshop, tabbed stuff is common sense in any application design nowadays :p

Another boring day at work, I decided to modify a few things and make the animator window and the color picker window. (Please UT make the Windows' windows thick borders disappear!)

I certainly like the tabs. Right now in the Unity editor you can save/load panel layouts, imagine the whole GUI supports multiple layouts but using such tabs.

This makes it easy to have a "game view tab" where perhaps the game view takes a bigger space and the console log replaces the area where the project assets panel is. And perhaps another one like an "animation tab" where you give the animation panel and mecanim panel lots of space.

The good thing is such "layout tabs" would be made by simply rearranging what's already there (and can be edited by the user) so it wouldn't be a drastic overhaul of the current GUI that the unity editor has. There's some plugins that do something like it already, like this one.

The only thing I don't like about the current layout system is it seems to have to recreate the whole window every time you switch and so isn't very fast and disrupts your workflow.

EDIT: Since the proposal here is that tabs let you switch to other opened scenes/prefabs, I guess these layouts shouldn't be in tabs. Maybe in a dropdown box. That's how it is in Blender. You could also cycle through all GUI layouts there using ctrl + left arrow key/ctrl + right arrow key, and it's very convenient.

Also I hope detached panels (which I put in my secondary monitor) stop being "always on top" when the main unity editor window has focus, and just act like regular windows that you could minimize, maximize like any normal window, independent of the main Unity editor window.

    Hello,

    I made some changes:

    - Created a scene file icon
    - Added "Absolute values" checkbox on the color picker window
    - Added Hexadecimal code on the color picker window
    - Changed the Play/Pause/Step button style for one carved on the editor
    - Added my so dreamed scene folders

About that small ui button, I thought that it would be nice to have some functionality that automatically focus on your UI, instead of switching to 2D and zooming out to see your ui, selecting your canvas and pressing F is faster but still, a single button to do this would be better I guess.

Those play/pause/step buttons on game view are for when you have dual monitors and you game view window is on the monitor which is not the main editor window and you are too lazy to press Ctrl+P or etc...

    Have a nice weekend!

Looks very good but the dev of the Unity UI is very slow and some like this can take years, I dream with a default node based material editor in Unity, posibly if i have time will be make one (i know that exist a pay asset for this but i cant spend money in this.)

Hey, thanks. But, I don't think this is true, I think they have a lot of things to do, if you open their issue tracker you can see a lot of bugs, also the ones that we have no idea, also, in the feedback area you can see that there are a lot of feature requests and etc, plus what they have planned that wasn't told to us yet...

    and forgot to post this:

    Play Mode Play/Pause/Step buttons

Sharing my thoughts on your idea.
Actually, it's good to see tabs in Unity. And i will really like it, if it will be there in Unity.
but i don't think, this is possible.
Because, just think that, you have 5 scenes with 1 Million tris in each of them. You have opened all of them & you want to play with all of them at same time. So, you need unity to react suddenly when you click on the tab. And tor it, Unity must render all of your scene at same time.
So, it means Unity will have to render 5 scenes & 5 million tris at same time.

Wouldn't this make unity slower ?

I like your idea, but i am just sharing my thoughts. May be i am wrong on this.

But currently you can dock how many scene views as you want (there is even a 4 windows layout), I don't think that would be a problem. Well, at least not a new problem, if your computer can handle unity now with those multiple scene views open, then... Also, these tabs would not be only for scenes, there is also editor extensions like play maker, shader forge, the so dreamed prefab editor and etc..

That looks better than the actual grey skin. Unity should take that, increase the contrast of the text (and fix the gradients) and ship it :)

Hey, that's nice! But still, light use interfaces hurts my eyes! I wish everything was dark grey, including the forums..

That would take too much time, it's just to give an idea of the layout and the features that could be implmented in those circumstances..

I think it should be adjustable like adobe illustrator...
