What about 32 bit systems ? Is there any option to try the experimental build of unity editor in my ubuntu 14.04 32 bit ? Thanks !
There are no plans to release a 32-bit editor for Linux. http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/32-bit-version-planed-or-no.350335/#post-2267569
Correct. You can play games that were created with the engine, but if you want to develop with Unity you need 64-bit.
It makes perfect sense. It takes extra work to make a 32-bit version of the editor (there's a massive amount of code that exists in the editor, but not in builds), and there are limitations which restrict what you can do. At this late date (2017), I can't see anyone wanting 32-bit; it's really obsolete. There's no point wasting any development time on it. --Eric
Eric Eric I don't want 32bit system I HAVE it. The only option for me is to buy a new PC then? I can't afford it sadly.
I was on 32-bit Linux by 2005, I think. Never looked back. Linux was the first OS to make a 64-bit transition smoothly and mostly invisibly, and the only reason to run 32-bit is for embedded devices, Raspberry Pi and such. Even cheap hardware now is fully 64-bit. Unity Technologies probably thought the percentage of 32-bit only users was too small already (the editor is soon 64-bit only on any platform).
That's unfortunate, but considering how old and outdated 32-bit is, I don't really know what you'd expect. I mean desktop 64-bit is around 15 years old by now. --Eric
i have it running on my 32-bit system. you need the 64-bit linux kernel package and multiarch, but it works. another choice is a 64-bit chroot: https://jayenashar.wordpress.com/2012/07/22/64-bit-on-32-bit/ 64-bit is really old, but there's no upgrade path from 32-bit to 64-bit and i don't feel like reinstalling. btw, i'm on debian but ubuntu 32-bit should work.
