Unity is freezing constantly since about a week ago. It happens randomly, but most frequently when clicking "Open Scene" from the File Menu or editing a prefab and trying to drag an asset into a public variable slot. I'm using the LTS 2020.3.29f version. It happened on the prior version, too. I checked all my graphics settings and everything's fine. It's not when running the scene, it happens in the editor mode. Nothing else is giving me issues, but it freezes so bad sometimes I have to hard restart my computer. Has anyone else had this happen recently?

what do you mean by freezing? start by looking at both unity logs, see if something is there, also check windows logs, those are quite detailed about hardware if there is an issue about this.

Thanks for the suggestions. When I would go to click "File > Open New Scene" or trying to drag gameobjects into public GameObject variable slots Unity would become unresponsive. In 2 instances it froze my computer and in the others it was only Unity becoming unresponsive.

I checked both the Unity and Windows logs. The Windows log shows "disk 1 has been surprise removed" and there is one about a failed windows update dated 2/15 which lines up pretty well. I only have a disk 0 on partition though, so I'm not sure where that's coming from. I've also read the disk removal is a common false positive and the update only had to do with a gaming service. Running sfc /scannow doesn't return any issues. I'm beginning to think it has to do with my NVIDIA driver.

Edit: I've upgraded to the 2021 version and now it's finally outputting a log. Now the problem is even worse. It just crashes when I try to open plugin windows. I have to downgrade again because it's now crashing every time. It says this when trying to open the VIDE Dialogue editor window for example (which worked before and now doesn't):

    Obtained 10 stack frames

    Edit 2/Update:
Ok, so I thought I had fixed it, but when I went to File Menu > Open Scene, it immediately froze again. The problem is very specifically Unity just stops responding when clicking File Menu > Open Scene. No dialogue window, everything else works, it just crashes when trying to click the menu.
    • Reimported and updated all packages and plugins.
    • Removed all unused code from imported packages and plugins.
    • Updated my render pipeline to the URP.
    • Switched my prefab variable based systems to a resource-loading system based on passing names into an argument.
    • Consolidated all code that was running similar functions with arrays involved into a single function using a switch statement that passed a single parameter and cleaned up all arrays after each use if they were length>0 and not null.
    • Updated my NVIDIA geforce to the latest driver.
    • Reimported all assets
    • Upgraded materials to URP shaders and set the ones that didn't upgrade to the URP default material.
Edit: Latest update is I removed UMA (Multipurpose avatar) from my project completely and it hasn't happened since.
