For the new project that will surely use Unity as a core engine on a few 2D platforms like Android/Windows 10 and may use some VR/AR features as an "optional bonus" in the future on other devices - which build of Unity is a recommended to start from - Unity for HoloLens 5.4.0b10-HTP or latest Unity 5.4 beta (and wait for HoloLens support merged back from HoloLens branch somewhere in the future)? I was ready to go with HoloLens build since from the feature completeness it seems the same as a main Unity 5.4 beta for me, but worry a bit about subsequent bug fix releases for this branch in the future. At this point I'm not sure how far the development of the main Unity branch may go ahead into the future before its HoloLens counterpart will catch up.

    Any thoughts?

    Hi Sevenate -

This HTP version is, as the acronym states, a technical preview, and not considered to be release-ready. You may want to weigh that against the needs of your project, but based on what you've said so far, it would probably be a good idea to stick with a version more likely to stay stable for now.

In the future, you could always back up your project and try upgrading to a newer version that would then have more complete and stable HoloLens support. In the meantime, you could of course prototype on the HoloLens completely separately, or even in a child branch in your source control, depending on how in-depth and continued that prototyping would be. The HTP version is set up so that you can have it installed at the same time as other versions of Unity.

That make sense, thanks for clarification. As far as I can see it we will not have HoloLens support in the Unity 5.4 RTM for sure, and probable not in the v5.5 as well. But are you planing to release any other sub sequential preview/beta builds of Unity for HoloLens in the not-so-distant future, which will incorporate fixes from the main Unity branch (like after 5.4 release)? Or these two branches will go ahead independently quite a while?

    Sevenate,

Yes there will be regular updates to the HTM (Hololens Technical Preview) build pulling in the latest 5.4 Beta's. The first update is likely to ship this Friday.

    Thanks,
    Scott

Thank you, Scott, good to hear that.

Also what about license - can we use Unity for HoloLens to make a UWP app build what could be later uploaded to the Store? Let's say - with HoloLens supported turned off for now in the Editor settings (till the Store will support HoloLens-ready apps officially - then we just turn it on and upload a new build without any other project conversions), but at least as regular game that is build with Unity engine.

Regarding licensing, you're good. The same licensing terms apply as with normal unity builds.
