I used smssnif. But I wasn't able to find a solution. I think unity need to patch it or sort out the CDN,

I'm still encountering this issue weeks later. Unity is present as a background task, but the launcher doesn't open for 5 hours. Here is everything I've tried so far:

    -updating Oculus
    -wi-fi connection tests
    -updating graphics drivers
-updating windows - running latest windows 10
    -Visual Studio uninstall and re-install
-running the program from the command line
-creating a new project from the command line
-forcing Direct X from the command line
    -running adwcleaner
-uninstall Unity and re-install Unity 2 more times
    -obviously many reboots
    -Windows Firewall check
-everything from https://answers.unity.com/page/troubleshooting.html even things that I didn't think applied to my problem

There is a patch for 2017.1 and the latest patch for 2017.2 seem to fix the issue the ivy. xml issue which causes unity not to launch.

Try this, it worked for me.

    For Windows 10 and 8

    1. Press the Windows key.
    2. Type Notepad in the search field.
    3. In the search results, right-click Notepad and select Run as administrator.
    4. From Notepad, open the following file: c:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts
    5. Copy and paste the following text on a new line in this file: 127.0.0.1 update.unity3d.com
    6. Click File > Save to save your changes.
    7. Open Unity and that should fix the DNS issue from now on.
    For Windows 7 and Vista

    1. Click Start > All Programs > Accessories.
    2. Right-click Notepad and select Run as administrator.
    3. Click Continue on the Windows needs your permission UAC window.
    4. When Notepad opens, click File > Open.
    5. In the File name field, type C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts.
    6. Click Open.
    7. Copy and paste the following text on a new line in this file: 127.0.0.1 update.unity3d.com
    8. Click File > Save to save your changes.
    9. Open Unity and that should fix the DNS issue from now on.

Still having this issue. Here are some additional things I've tried

-adding 127.0.0.1 update.unity3d.com to the Windows hosts file
-going down to 1 monitor - I thought it could be a dual monitor issue
-adding an exception to the windows defender process section for unity.exe
    -updating to Unity 2017.2p4 install/file

    still nada

Thanks for the thoughts and attempts though.

I'm getting this issue on the mac, the launch screen doesn't even come up.
I can see a couple of UnityHelper processes running and that's it.
Just started happening this afternoon, was fine this morning

So I got a 50ft CAT 6 cable and I'm getting 75 ish Mbps download speeds, up from around 14Mbps download speeds, and I'm still encountering this issue. I've also had some issues although more random and intermittent just running Unity executables. I can run certain ones I've built fine and quickly. If I had to guess it's the builds from the 2017 series.

I've had Unity crash on me twice in the last day which exacerbates this issue.

Here are some error messages I get when Unity finally does open after 5 hours. Perhaps this is some kind of issue with Unity Connect or Collaborate. I don't use Unity Connect or Collaborate. I tried it for literally like 2 minutes once during a game jam and never bothered to touch it again. When Unity is open, it is constantly looking to connect to Unity connect, which it can't, ironically. If I try to do anything with Connect or Collaborate I am told by Unity that I do not have permission to do anything with it. It seems to be looking for my organization. I don't understand why it would be trying to connect if I am not given permission to do anything with it. If I log out of Unity, then Unity Connect and Collaborate will stop trying to connect. This is not something I can maintain over the long haul as there are certain assets I need to download from the asset store from time to time which require me to be logged into Unity.

I've tried googling around for these error messages which are attached, but the only results I see are for Ubuntu builds. I'm running Windows and my connections are all set to DHCP.

Trying my best to stay patient ...

Ok so I have tried the working offline/host file change & deleting the temp file and Unity does load quicker but then it generally makes the system slow dispite memory being at just 25%. If I don't do anything and load it will take 25mins (approx) to open but will be useable. Odd how this still an issue after so long?

This has happened to me multiple times in the past week+. Saw the suggestion to delete the "temp" folder in my project and that worked for me. Still, this problem should really be fixed permanently. It's ridiculous.

    Finally!
To me, the only way to fix it was executing Step 3: Delete the Library/ScriptAssemblies folder in project

    Thanks @phucvin

Today is February 26, 2018. This bug still exists. I have this problem with 15 computers. I have tried all of the suggested solutions here but Unity hangs on the background when trying to open or make a new project. Any new solutions?

Still a problem. How tf do you mess something like this up? For me it started when I had to use unity offline as my net died for a week. Initially it just took forever to load, but now its just a 0% cpu background process for the editor.

I had to hard wipe my whole drive to fix the issue for me. I tried a soft wipe and it didn't fix it. It took me a whole weekend to wipe twice and reinstall everything.

After several hours of trying different solutions, I found out (thanks to the hint in this thread) I just have to unplug the USB Gamecontroller device. Seems to be still an issue :(

Resolution: indeed. If I have a USB controller plugged into my PC it prevents the editor from launching. Unplugging the USB came controller popped the editor right up.

Also had this freeze due to xbox controller being plugged in. I guess some drivers changed, this never used to be an issue for me!

This issue just randomly popped up for me on a single project. Other projects are able to be opened fine. I tried all solutions posted in this thread (besides the unplug USB one, which I will try the next time it happens), and nothing worked. However, I believe I may have found a work around for the time being.

Open a project that displays correctly. Close it. Delete all folders in the project that won't open besides the Assets and Project Settings folders. Launch that project.

    The first step is paramount.

Not a great solution as it looks like it needs to be done every time I want to open the project, but hey, at least I can get it open.

I have tracked down my particular issue to a Custom Editor Window. If I close Unity with this custom editor window open, I get the issue where Unity only loads in the background. Has anyone else experienced this and found a solution?

Using Unity 2013.3, after years of never having an issue, this happened:
    Img01.JPG

The problem starts here. That's as far as it will go when trying to upload a project.

    Img02.JPG

    Which leads to this:
    Img03.JPG

I updated Unity and still suffer from the same issue. I opened the TaskManager and had to close 4 instances of Unity Hub. At first, I thought that was the problem, that maybe the hub was running in the background and it was causing a severe conflict. However, the issue seems completely within the package manager here.

I only have a microphone and mouse ported into my laptop.

I realize this is an old thread and I'm necro'ing but after reading the comments, I'm wondering if the issue is similar?

Had this same problem on 2021.3.9f1 and none of the above advice worked. I'm on MacOS Monterey 12.6. What solved it was 1) closing the editor, if it was running as a background task 2) logging out of my unity account before trying to open my project in unity hub again, using the unity menu in the top right of my screen. Then Unity opens like normal as a very small screen, just expand it.

log out of your unity account.jpeg
