Unity editor freezes every 2 seconds

For whatever reason, my editor freezes every 2 seconds or so. I noticed that the freezes don't happen as long as I move the camera, but as soon as I let go of the mouse button the freezing starts again. It's as if it keeps refreshing something over and over. Imagine trying to browse the internet, but your browser refreshes the page every 2 seconds... It's a bit like that. I'll link a gif which shows the issue. As you can see, my mouse cursor shows something loading every two seconds or so.

I've tried a bunch of different versions of unity from 2.0f1 forward. The problem arose after an update of unity from 5.6.1f1.

I've verified that the problem has nothing to do with the project I'm working on since I tried opening a fresh, empty project and ran into the same issue.
