    Greetings,

I've got problem on my brand new machine. Asus ZenBook Pro 15,6".
I have never experienced this before. It happens each time when I try to resize hierarchy window, game/scene window or lets say move console window to another location. Window that I'm trying to modify gets non responsive, black/white or gray color and unity just freezes. Only thing I can do is to quit it and run it again or unity pops up window to report a bug.

Windows 10 Pro is up to date, same goes for 1050Ti Nvidia gpu driver and latest version of Unity (2018.1.6f1).

I've checked through task manager Nvidia GPU is being used when I run Unity, intel UHD integrated is also on the go probably for windows stuff but it stays on same low % comparing to Nvidia GPU that is being under load when I play the scene or whatever similar. So its not about Unity using weaker GPU.

Did anyone else experience something similar and do you know is it permanent bug on laptops atm or is it fixable bug? :(

    Cheers!

I've been having the same issue on my laptop: Dell XPS 15 / Windows 10 Home / NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 / Unity 2018.1.5f1. Graphics drivers and Windows also fully up to date same as you.

After seeing your post I I tried forcing Unity to run using Integrated graphics in the NVIDIA Control Panel and that seems to have stopped the issue for me. Not ideal, but could be useful as a temporary workaround?

I'm experiencing this as well on my MSI laptop running Win 10 Pro with a GTX 1070 and Unity 2018.1.5f1. A permanent fix would be nice. I would much rather run Unity using my 1070 and not the integrated Intel graphics.

Hey guys, thanks for answers and for joining discussion. Update. My issue all of the sudden disappeared after some random windows updates (version 1803 installed on 06/20/2018) that popped up few days ago and NVIDIA GeForce Experience update for driver also (Version:398.36 - Release date: 06/26/2018). Using Nvidia Control Panel => Manage 3D settings => Global Settings : Auto - select, Program Settings : Unity3D(exe) : Use global setting (Auto-select: NVIDIA GPU). Unity (2018.1.6f1 - 64bit).

When I had bug I've tried to change battery-performance from battery saver to full performance. It made no difference and all of the other weird modifications. It seems it's connected to windows or graphic drivers...But I can't tell with 100% accuracy. It sucks that it is so random and those machines aren't cheap... Hope it helps you :)

I will post again, if I encounter any similar bug in near future.

I've experienced the same nuisance for a while. In my case, it had to do with GeForce controller's behavior while my laptop was unplugged. A quick fix is to plug the laptop. A more permanent fix is to disable Battery Boost. This option can be found in GeForce Experience - Settings - Games.

In case anyone still has this problem:

I fixed this by launching Unity in OpenGL mode. (Unity Support suggested to try that)
To do so, open Unity via the Command Line and add the argument -force-glcore at the end. Since it's super tedious to type the command every time I want to start Unity, I created a batch file which doesn't contain more than the following:
    Code (CSharp):
    1. START D:\Programme\UnityVersions\2018.2.20f1\Editor\Unity.exe -force-glcore
You can just copy this line into a text editor of your choice and save the thing as Unity.bat or something.
    Hope this helps :)

Edit: You'd have to change the path to match your Unity location, of course :3

Fixed my Dell laptop issue too!

Instead of a batch file, you can edit the Unity icon on your desktop and add -force-glcore to the end of the command line entry there.

I'm having this too - but editing the shortcut isn't helping because it just loads up Unity Hub - and I can't see a way of adding launch parameters when Unity Hub loads Unity :/

Hey @cloakedninjas, some laptops switch to using the integrated graphics on processor to save power - is it possible your laptop is doing this?

No idea - was forced to disable Battery Boost in the Nvida Experience app

Disabling Battery Boost solved the issue for me too, thanks @conNen

Please note that after a recent nVidia driver update, I had to reenter GeForce Experience and disable Battery Boost again.

Hello! I was having the same issue on an MSI GE63 Raider RGB 9SE-837US. RTX 2060.
    2 Things fixed this:
    1) Disabling GeForce battery boost as mentioned above.
    2) Putting the computer (Windows 10) into low power mode.

What is the root cause of this? Very curious.

Hey! I believe you're all (or most of you in this thread) might be experiencing this issue:
    https://issuetracker.unity3d.com/product/unity/issues/guid/1127974/
It's an older known issue and has a pretty good explanation of why it happens and gives some workarounds to try and work with it.

There are also some recent findings that some of DirectX crashes might be related to GeForce Experience in some way, so for future reference, if you're experiencing something like this and you've already disabled Battery Boost, please try uninstalling GeForce Experience as well and see if that helps.

There's also some truth in that the issues might be caused by Windows updates or faulty GPU drivers.

I solved this by going into nVidia "nView Desktop Mangager". Under Windows Manager uncheck "Make Windows Transparent When Dragged".
