We are pleased to announce the Open Beta launch of Unity Discussions.

Unity Discussions replaces Answers, becoming a new platform for Unity Communities to ask or answer questions and help each other and – in the future – share announcements, updates, and learnings as we grow Unity Discussions.

This has been a challenging project with very tight timelines and high user interest.

We would like to thank everyone who helped us, especially the closed beta testing group.
    • Together with the team at Discourse we successfully migrated over 11GB of compressed data including 257K topics and 160K users.
    • After collecting feedback from Beta testers, individual sessions have been held with power testers to discuss feedback.
    So what’s next?

Unity Discussions will remain at Beta status, to allow us to improve features and user experience until it meets the exit criteria. Once the site has matured, we will start the process to migrate Forums to Unity Discussions later this year.

When trying to log in, I am prompted to create an account:
    upload_2023-6-13_22-0-16.png
It auto fills my email based on my Unity account, which makes sense for me.

It also fills my username, but doesn't let me change it, why can't I change it?

Also, it requires me to manually input my old reputation score from AswersHub, but the site is down already, so I can't check it to put the right number there.

Hi, you shouldn't be seeing this field. Looks like a setting was missing. Could you please try again?

Your Discussions account is tied to your Unity ID, just like in the forum here. If you want to change your username, you have to change it in your Unity ID settings.

The screen doesn't appear anymore, it created the account for me automatically, but with the incorrect username (it has a number in the end that it shouldn't have). Is it expected for the usernames to be a little different?

Please tell me the UI will change before this launches and replaces the forums.
As someone who uses forums to help out people a lot, this looks really annoying to manage and go to topics

Looks like the email address that was tied to your Answers account didn't match with the address that is currently tied to your Unity ID. I've merged the accounts. Are you able to access it now?

Before we migrate the forums to anywhere we will be doing a lot of user research and talking to the users here so we can come up with the best solution for all. It might require some compromises for both sides but we will try and keep the majority happy

How do I get my old username? I used to post with username @Luemus to Unity answers, now after I logged in I noticed that I got assigned @Luemus1

So we think we have found out whats is causing this. it seems to be occurring if a user changed their email address with regard to their Unity ID. We can merge the accounts which gives us a workaround, and are working to see how we can fix this longer term.

Please let us know if your impacted by this so we can check and make sure our deductions are correct and help sort it for you

Apologies for the annoyance, and hopefully it won't spoil your experience too much

Did you pull down the old site (answers)?

Why? Google has that thing wired. Or... had.

Is the cost of hosting Answers exorbitant for a 15 billion dollar company?

Please check this thread for information about why we migrated to a new platform. We have set up extensive redirects from the old page to the corresponding content on Unity Discussions so the impact on search engine results should be minimal.

This is chicken and egg stuff. The traffic was clearly declining because the user experience was getting worse, both in real terms and relative terms, at the same time, for a decade.

Relative terms: Stackoverflow was getting better during the decade.

Real terms: so many bugs and presentation issues and foibles with the systems crept in and never got fixed.

Now, this new one, is unreadable on a Safari version congruent with 10.13.6, the last truly stable version of MacOS, on a 2019 MacBook Pro.

And in a browser that is able to render it, it's not good to look at. And there's some mention of time constraints in creating this new version of Answers, likely meaning it's another chicken and egg race, wherein the compromises made under the time and budget constraints mean it's probably not a good experience, either.

If the reason this has happened is to placate the complainers about shutting down Answers, it might have been better to just start again and leave Answers up for posterity.

Unity really shouldn't be forming webdev teams making and maintaining their own platforms. Unity Answers format was superior to this new thing, but it's dead, Jim.

The comments on replies are in a super tiny font on my 1440p screen yet they often contain the most useful information. I have to zoom into the browser to read comfortably at about 125%. But otherwise, this seems usable.

I know that later in the current or next year you intend to migrate forum posts to the Discussions platform.

I believe that any post on the forum should be considered as 2 parts of a single entity:
    1. Post itself.
    2. Signature.
Because signature can contain important legal information about ads, affiliate links, etc.

Since the Discussions platform doesn't provide a signature interface, during the migration process you need:
    • to combine 2 parts into a post body
    • OR to provide an appropriate section for signatures. (the most preferred, I guess)

Why do I get it in a mishmash of French and English? Why doesn't it use the language settings I chose for the entire site?

Hi I don't immediately understand the need for this or a replacement to Unity answers. I understand Unity answers had a long list of previously answered questions and so keeping it searchable from Google was useful, but if you want an answer to something you should go to a dedicated section for it (i.e. a forum). Otherwise you end up with a huge list of questions and answers with the need to search by tags surely?

What is the need for this, will it just not divide up questions and answers between the clean forum setup and the messy Unity Discussions?
Discussions already appears before forum under Community now - will it kill off the forums?

Is there some issue with the searchability of the forums or is there a hybrid approach?
Have you polled users as to which they prefer - answers style or forum?

    Sure there is.
Unless you search for specific keyword in give forum section, current Unity search doesn't handle phrases searching. Also there is no per thread searching feature.

Best you can do is use search using external search engine of your browser. Not Unity forum search.

Using Unity search is tedious and awkward on itself.

Unity Answers is long dead. And should be archived many years ago. It splits community. And tons of answers stays unaswerd, creating huge mess.

If UA and UF are merged, you got all devs together, and chance for better response on each post. If executed well, improving QA quality and general searchibility.

UF itself is dated. It had period when migration to other forum was attempted. But failed. But current UF suffers from tons of issues. From security, lack of spam filters, using third party services, which is a problem, bad search tools. Looking dated.

However, I am not 100% convinced, that discourse is a way to go, to handle such technical community. For me It looks less readible, and tries to gamifying users. Hopefully these features will be disabled.
I need fast navigation. Few years back changes on UF made forum categories less user friendly, and I waste so much time searching through categories, to navigate to desired one.

totally agree - forum search is Edit:OK? inside the system but hopefully you get linked to it by google searches
UF has long been dated and that update failed - but not a reason to dump it for a "less readible, and tries to gamifying users" solution!

We're working on implementing signatures on Discussions.

Localization of the interface is currently not supported. We'll likely switch the native localization support that comes with Discourse off until things have stabilized to avoid further confusion.

    Actually, there is. 2023-09-07_12-03-37.png

Please see our update here for context.

I understand some people wanted Unity answers back and perhaps more people wanted to be able to read the old answers. But do more people want this quite unreadable approach instead of forums? Has that actually been polled?

I doubt it. I was in the Answers beta and more or less silently watched how it went. Never opened answers ever again. I hope they won't botch the forum update and the PM function will work when they force everyone onto the Discussion frontend, I would hate that my request of disabling my user account on the forums would not go through (unless the confusing Discussion frontend has self-serving "disable my account" functionality, in that case I don't care).

Login is hugely not good at the moment! So I am in the forums logged in. I go to discussion link and I am logged out. Hmm. Well I click login and it auto logs me in with a different account and I can not see how to change that.

I went back to unity home page and logged in, then went to discussions - fixed. But if you could go from forums to Discussions without log out it would be nice

    Hi!
Apparently the mishmash of French and English has been fixed, the place is totally in English on both my pc and my phone, thanks! :)

Edit: I also noticed that we can choose a theme (day or night) for the place. Will this be added to the forums once? Or will you migrate the forums to the new software you use for Discussions?

Hello, just saw this change. Were all the answer ported?
Could you use a white background for the discussions? Maybe switch the colors, menu with background grey and discussions with background white.
Grey background with black text doesn't have a great readability, it is tiring on my eyes.

Better make the text white or you can switch to the dark mode, the moon at the top of the screen. :)

I don't see any "delete my account" out there, where is it?

Also, I'd like to correct my username (for some reason there is a "1" at the end of it), how do I do that? :)

    Thank you.

If you want to delete your account, you'll have to go through your Unity ID and request deletion there.

You already had a previous account on Unity Answers which was out of sync with your Unity ID, so when you signed into Discussions, it created a separate account. I've merged the two accounts and things should work as intended now.

@LeonhardP Sorry about that but I have another question. I got a notification. If I click on it, it opens my comment directly in edit mode. Why is that?
I'd love to add images but I can't do that on my phone, images are greyed out.

Edit: Here are the images, made on my pc.

Edit 2: Okay, I think I know what's happened. This guy edited my post! How do I make my posts not editable by anyone except me?
People editing others' comments could put anything in them! Insults! Unwanted content! False information! and so on. This is unacceptable.

That would be a terrible idea. Discussions is a replacement/upgrade for Answers. They serve two different purposes.

What an incredibly stupid decision. I hope you're prepared to lose the majority of your community.

Likely with the removal of any kind of general discussion areas.

Indeed, I don't want Unity Discussions. Unity Forums feel way superior to me at the time of writing. The functionality to accept a reply as a solution is nice, though.

However, I assume one could integrate such functionality into the existing forum as well, instead of spending years of work on a new solution and forcing thousands of people to migrate to the new platform.

Can you expand your vision here? As I could see from 2013 year, Unity Answers suffered from a lack of answers to questions, and on the Unity Forum I could get answers that were left unanswered on Unity Answers.

My behavior related to Unity Discussion for now is the same. I only use Unity Forums because the Audience is wider. I can get different opinions in hours.

An answers system is only really practical for getting answers, but a forum system allows you to have discussions too on top of getting answers. It also doesn't hurt that the forum has a much less busy theme. Unity Discussions is basically 20% actual content and 80% crap surrounding it.

yup, this is just another unity disaster waiting to happen : /

about same level as the run time fee fiasco and forced Lithium "upgrade", at least for me,
since i rely on the forum information daily.
(and getting google results into forums, the better UX, followed topics and more compared to answers or discord).

While simultaneously pushing people to other sites as those will now be the only search results. We've already seen how many people are finding these forums due to how many threads are necro'd on a regular basis, and all of them will now be stumbling upon other sites like reddit.

Part of it is inherent to Discourse, but I feel like every other forum that uses it adjusts the theme and general settings to mitigate it a little (the FMOD forums for example, although I'm not crazy about it there either) but Unity seems to have ran the other direction.

Epic's theme feels the best to me thanks in part to their decision not to force it to only occupy a limited part of the middle of the screen on non-mobile devices. They provide a button to hide the sidebar if you want even less of a distraction.
