    Hey all,

Weird I was only on here like three days ago and checked out the User Groups section for Australia to see if anything was being organised semi-locally to attend hoping to familiarize myself with any Unity changes, then today I find this thread in the Gossip section ^^

I currently live in Forbes, NSW and moved here close to 5 years ago to follow the dream of game development. Taken awhile to learn all that's out there but I'm telling my fiance that 2013 is the year for us as I hope to release a successful game for iOS. Not the market I really enjoy myself but honestly that's where the money is and since it's so accessible for indie's I might as well make a go of it.

So what about the rest of you? How much time you have allocated for game development and are you creating for the lack of a desired game or chasing the dollars?

I do it full time from home here in Sutherlandshire (land of the hobbits). I do wonder how anyone here in Australia can make a proper living from being indie though. Unless you get lucky and have a hit on your hands the best you are going to do is get some more beer and barbie money. The average wage is so high here that I could earn more being a lollipop man (at a school) or traffic controller (lollipop man at roadworks). Average wage here is about $55,000 and that's working in a checkout or something, teachers, nurses and any other kind of public servant seem to easily make 80,000 plus. So the chances of being able to replace a day job with indie income is going to be a struggle!

I still do it though cos making games is fun and my boss is great and the trip to work from my bed to my work room is about 10 meters!

Well it was the Australian National University (in Canberra), that created and launched the very first Australian website.
So yes, we do have the internet.

We used to have fireworks, until some politician decided that they don't like fireworks.
As soon as he had gotten fireworks banned, he retired.

Oh well, it doesn't stop me ;)

LOL!!! You mean the National Broadband Network that links up a tiny fraction of the Nation? It's almost as bad as the new National Curriculum that is different in each state! LOL.

Yeah, 100% of a nation is *soo* small.

Fair warning, I've invested a couple years of my life tracking the project - don't say anything you aren't willing to back up :p

G'day all, Unity noob on the Gold Coast, trying hard to make a game that actually works ;) Been playing with Unity for about a year now, and finally convinced myself to spend the dollars on Unity4 Pro last week.

I gotta ask : am I the only one finding it very slow getting into the Asset store? Seems these last couple of weeks it takes forever for the damn thing to open. I'm on cable broadband, have a fast connection, and everything else online works as normal except for the asset store... wondering if anyone else in this part of the world is experiencing the same thing, or is it just me.

Hello all, live in Brisbane working on my own project... its good pretty good... except for the modelling which I'm terrible at.

Haha, Queensland FTW, anyway just letting you know I have not been experiencing any problems with the asset store. What browser are you using?

I lived on the Gold Coast about 5 years ago now. Moved to rural NSW to buy a house and live more modestly just so I could start independent game development ^^ I've not had any problems accessing the Asset Store from here over the last few weeks.

I'm using IE9 (?) or whatever is in Windows 7. Sometimes it can take 3-4 mins to open, irrespective of what time of day or night I try it. It's only been happening for the last couple of weeks, that's why I figured it can't be me...seems I was wrong :(
    Thanks for the input guys.

"Slow" is a relative word. If you want answer define slow in numerical term. ;)
How slow? Like a minute? 5 minutes? 30 minutes?

I have found that it takes about a solid minute and half to get into Asset Store from within Unity - and I suspect that's because I have bought more than 4 dozens of extensions. The Asset Store not only has to verify your account info with their account server, it also verifies the extensions installed on your computer, check against the database on their server, check the hash codes, extension versions, the updates and whatnots. I have found that if I use just regular browser (Firefox) to browse the Asset Store, its always instantaneous.

Hmmm, then try Firefox or Chrome. If they still take up to 3-4 mins to open, its either your internet connection is slow, or it just happen you have bad routing to Asset Store server, or maybe firewall/router/network setup that's got messed up. AFAIK, Asset Store doesn't need special privileges to access the network. It should just work regardless of firewall/network setup so long as you have internet connection.
