I'm order 45!!! This will be great! can't wait to get the first issue in my hands!

PS: You guys should make the shopping page secure (there is no security icon displayed in my top-right corner in safari). Also, there is no terms Conditions text (it shows a black page).

The purchase page through Paypal is secure, but by default the store isn't. You could have just added "https" to the front though. I've modified the original link to use SSL.

FYI - For anyone who has been looking to make an international order on a single issue, and has thought that 6 EUR is a bit too steep -- I apologize. For some reason it is calculating subscription shipping prices for single issues. I am completely re-launching the store in a day and this is corrected in the new software.

The store has had a bit of an upgrade. I've updated the link in this thread.
We can directly take credit card payments now, so for those of you who have voiced a dislike of PayPal (in this thread and through email), we are set.

Also, please note that shipping is now correctly calculated on individual issues ordered internationally.

I'll be manually entering all of the original orders in the new system now

Check it out, and if you haven't subscribed or ordered yet but are interested, please do!

    Tomas -

I don't know how I managed to post after you and miss your post entirely.
We can ship to Brazil, and I can update addresses, so there is no problem.

Sorry about the delay in my response!

When do we know exactly when the first issue will ship?

(I decided that I had to have it about a week ago and caved. )

Joaquin - I'm emailing you. All of the accounts from the first store are being manually moved to the new one (there was not an export option) so that is why there is difficulty getting logged in. Everything is fine though.

Jessy - In July. Magazines should be on press by the end of June, so they will be in everyones hands a little ways into July. For future issues, the schedule should allow for issues to arrive on or before the first of the month (so September's should be to subscribers by September 1st at the latest). I'll be able to give a firm date next week when I get the last of the shipping/fulfillment issues sorted out.

edit: Just so that "issues" doesn't get misconstrued -- there aren't any problems, I just apparently asked some difficult to answer questions of the mailing house with regards to some of the international shipping.

Hans - I've emailed you as well. This is the same issue -- there was no data export option, so I've been manually porting over orders from the first system. Rest assured that if you received confirmation from the first system, I have all of your contact information and you will be receiving magazines. Sorry about the confusion.

i admit that the idea of a magazine on unity is great.

As many of you i have concerns about the physical magazine; i love the paper feeling, and even if a computer is amazing to read, i totally rely on something that humans do since century: read on paper under a nice light, some music and a glass of good cognac :)

But at the same time i love the pdf format: at the moment i have 4 subscriptions to magazines in pdf, and 5 at zinio.com (their format is protected, but if you keep the license on the machine you can read them all the time that you want); and the feeling of getting the magazine wherever you go, without stacking old issues in the garage is amazing :) have the entire collection of game developer magazine on a dvd, with science and other magazines.

Many publishers sell books in digital format, or give a digital alternative, mainly because you save tree and environment (who cares, right? then when we will be without trees we will really be in trouble LOL); and nowadays everyone is so busy that reading a magazine is considered a luxury, while reading on a computer is easier, and if the boss stops by you can switch space and continue to work and read at the same time :)

anyway, i think that nobody is interested in these things; the topic is the magazine, so i would like to see how is it before buying an annual subscription;so i think taht i will buy the first issue and then decide :)

Glad to see that there is a magazine for Unity!

That is one area that I will reply to specifically. Having done a lot to reduce my own environmental impact (and having offset those carbon emissions that I could not reduce) this is something that I take seriously. The reality is that a niche publication has a fairly modest environmental impact (and the impact is in the shipping of the magazine more so than the paper or printing -- most major mills go to great lengths to ensure that their product comes from sustainable growth forests, and the printing industry is heavily regulated). That said, there is an impact and that is something that I will have to address and remedy over time. I just don't want anyone to think that it is an issue that hasn't crossed my mind.

As for personal taste -- when you get the magazine, you will get access to a digital version, so if you really don't want a printed copy, give it to a friend. If you want the convenience of a digital copy and the old-time charm of ink on paper, you get that.

I've tried to lay an order but I get an error with the State field. I live in Sweden and have selected that and the text "The selected country doesn't require 'state' field" has replaced the State input field. But when I post the form I get two << next to the State text and the error "Please make sure you properly filled in all the required fields!". I've tried several times with no luck. Do you have any idea what I might do wrong?

    Regards,

    Johan Israelsson

If you have trouble ordering and it is a system thing like that, PM me or contact through the contact form.

edit: I just created a test account for a made up address in Sweden without any problems, so I'm wondering if another required field is creating the problem. The "no state required" change occurred and I wasn't prompted for a state.

Placed my subscription order... anxiously awaiting! I did notice that the credit card order started secure then submitted straight HTTP (not something that troubled me... if you steal my identity just remember you have to keep it :D ) but ... you may need to adjust the target URL to HTTPS and do a redirect from the HTTP protocol.

    Thanks,

    Galen

Just signed up for a copy but shipping costs are over half the magazine costs so if you could get around to a pdf version then that would be great.

    thank you

I thought that it would be better to post this in the original thread than the one about issue one shipping, since this isn't specific to the first issue.

I've had a number of people contact me asking how they can help with Unity Developer Magazine. I'll assume that probably means that there are other people who have wondered but just haven't asked.

    Here are my thoughts:

The most obvious way is to subscribe or order individual issues. But I'm guessing that anyone asking how they can help is already a subscriber, so these all go a little more in-depth:

If you are working on a project, let me know. I try to review and play everything that gets posted in the Showcase section, but keep in mind that the magazine has to work on content starting several months in advance. If you give me a heads up early on (show me some screen shots, tell me what you are planning on doing), that helps me plan content in advance and ensures that the whole process is much smoother. PM me, email me, Skype me... early and often. Keep me in the loop.

If you want to contribute content, contact me. There isn't much of a budget there, but we can work something out. The more people who contribute, the more viewpoints the magazine will have and the better it will represent the community as a whole. As a heads-up, the first thing that I will probably suggest to you is to put together an outline. This is so that I can understand the scope of what you want to write about and figure out where to put it. Bonus points to anybody who emails me with an outline already complete. I also want to thank Andy Stark for his contributions in issue one - not only did he write the A* article, but he also contributed all of the difficult parts and clever ideas in the introduction to vectors article (you know, the stuff that made it interesting). Be like andeeee

Even if you don't have any projects to a point to share and don't have the time to contribute content, you can help by spreading the word. Blog about the magazine. Bookmark it on delicious. Link to us from your web site. The more attention that we get, the easier it will be fore us to move forward. Thanks to Marraboy and Richard Leggett for blogging about us so far.

If you or your company offers a product or service that Unity developers might be interested in, consider advertising. Advertising is the best way to make a positive impact on the magazine's bottom line. Our numbers may not be as strong as more established magazines, but what we lack in reach we more than make up for in community goodwill. Everybody who reads Unity Developer Magazine understands that an advertiser is as much casting a vote for the legitimacy of this development community as anything else. It is a good way for a company to show that they are serious about Unity users. Graveck Interactive and Deepwater 3D both have ads in the first issue showcasing their development services. Both of them did it because they knew it would really help make publishing the first issue possible.

On the subject of advertising, try the products and services offered by our advertisers. We approached specific companies about advertising because they were doing things that we though our readers would benefit from and because we thought they would benefit from exposure to our readers. MacTank is a good example from issue one -- the MailTank product would be incredibly useful for an indie developer to manage support services. Try it out and let them know that you saw their ad in Unity Developer Magazine. I think that both you and our advertisers would benefit from that.

Unity Developer Magazine wants to cover Unite 2008 and could use a little help getting there. You can read more about it and contribute to the cause.

Finally, the cheapest and easiest way for you to help is to let me know what you think. Email me. Tell me what I did right and what I did wrong. Your feedback helps shape the magazine -- silence is really the only useless feedback I can get.

And thanks for wanting to help -- it is difficult to overestimate just how awesome this community is.

I received issues 1 and 2 - issue 3, however, got severely delayed (which is unfortunate because I think it's gonna be a very cool issue). AFAIK, the issue is "basically done" but there was a problem with printing and then came a lot of other problems / things that had to be attended to. Maybe Charles can chime in and give us an update.

The latest update I'm aware of can be found in: this thread

You may want to refer to this thread for more info.

The short explanation... don't worry about your subscription "running out" any time soon. Despite initial subscriptions being for one year, they're going to honor it as set number of issues instead. (Possibly as many as six issues.)
