In the midst of texturing and building a small scene around the kart.
Only a few days left, but everybody take their time :)

I've got a question seeing for some of yall. I see your topology and I'm still a noob if you know what I mean. My question is will this kind of topology in my photo cause shading issues? They are all quads that I need to define the shape but I thought that yall would have better insight on what a good topology should look like. Screenshot (18).png

Love seeing all the progress going on in here, there's a lot of good entries so far!

I'm nearly finished with modelling my entry. I'm going along the hover-kart route as well, but of course in my own way :p The hover-y parts are still missing from this version, but he's a WIP of the main body so far:

One part where I could see shading problems would be this part, as this shape seems to be a little "twisted"?

    Bildschirmfoto 2016-03-25 um 22.50.21 copy.jpg

Is this supposed to be the lowpoly-version of your model?
If it is, you have A LOT of geometry in your model that you actually do not need and that will have a bad impact on such things as poly- and vertexcount.
You could get away with a significantly simpler lowpoly mesh, when you bake normals from your highpoly mesh.
Think about if you really need all those polys to define the shape. Do you need those rounded edges or would it be enough if they'd appear round from a certain distance?

Maybe something like this? (very quick overpainting, not saying this is the best or only true solution! But maybe it helps) :)

Thank you very much for that. I don't any experience baking high to low poly so I'm not used to how little or how many vertices to use. Thanks for the advice!

Looks promising. See if you can pull a decent normalmap out of those wood textures (ps + xnormal plugin, ps + nvidia plugin, plus there are a few for GIMP if you use that). Adding a nice woodgrain texture to those wood panels would really make it sing (pun intended) :D

I've always liked the shape of sharks. I particularly like this one.

BTW, seems I won't have enough time to make something for this contest.:( I sooooo wanted to, but I suppose this is what I get for trying to participate in three different contests in a single month. There's the possibility of squeezing something out, but I doubt I'll do it.
Hopefully next month, if I can!

Thank you mcdonals53 :) Actually I`m using Substance Painter for texturing. So there is already a slight wood grain and also normal information on the wood texture. But I will try to push it a bit more ;) thx

I'm hoping these Sketchfab embeds count as WIP shots :p

Almost finished my geometry now. Added the engines and some more details:

Having some overheating issues with my PC right now... hopefully they dont stop me finishing this!

Luckily I'm on the finishing line with my entry. Currently working on the lighting in Blender.

    wip03.PNG

    (Yes, Zephos rides it.)
Hope I can get a similar cel-shaded look like in the game. Will try to go for the same outlines that the artworks of Wind Waker have and hope they match the style in 3D as well, but we'll see if it works :D

Good luck to all the others! 4 days are a lot of time to finalize and polish, hope everyone makes it and had the same amount of fun I had with this challenge :)

Here's my final entry (unless, the sign and character aren't allowed, then I'll remove them). The rider didn't turn out as well as I expected, but I'm happy with it overall.

Looks really nice already @stef_75! Keep going, it's still more than 3 more days, you can do it! :)
Finalization was pretty fast for me, still gonna polish a bit over the next days but I guess it's pretty much done.
But here it is... the Wind Wa-KART!

I'm pretty satisfied how it turned out. Took a lot of reference from my old 200 pages Wind Waker Stragety Guide from Piggyback. So much artwork in there and hope I could get close to the style :D
Great theme and a lot of fun doing something in this style. And thanks again for this cool theme, it always pushes me to do something^^

Edit: Looks like the forum embeds Sketchfab as 4:3 ratio. If you want to see the custom BG image I made feel free to view it on Sketchfab directly :)

Hey @d-3 ! Your entry looks great and is fine the way it is. No need for a Diorama.

@praesidenter Good work there as well!! Love the retro vibe. Congrats on finishing!

To all... there is about 2.5 days left in this competition! Hurry up and try to finish it! The toughest challenge in a challenge is to make it to the finish line so congrats to those who actually make it there!

When i saw essimon's post i started looking for the contest .. well a bit late but guess i still got a bit time :D
After a bit of work, i got my basic idea down. So a turtle themed pokemon kart. based on my Turtok i made this month.
Basic idea is the coppa kart, just in a slightly more bulky version. (never liked how bowzer got this tiny kart)
    Well wip :p

@m-circuit Pretty cool too! Bit of refining on the textures and lighting would do wonders :)

@Miss_Merlynn Congrats on finishing! Good work there as well! Liked the idea from the get go :)

Updated the final entry a bit. I felt like the sign and rider were distracting from the kart. The kart hasn't been changed, just the props :)

Some great entries! Sadly I don't think I will finish in time as I started WAY too late and hardware failures....but I will finish this like last time. It's been a excellent opportunity to learn Blender (and discovers it works beautifully on my spare little Linux netbook!)

Here is my final entry for the challenge. The mad rhino kart. well its somewhere in between a kart and a buggy.
I didn't have the time to add the definition I wanted but I think this will do for now:). This was really fun... and very good exercise in substance painter as well.
    Good luck to everyone!

Edit: small update on the model
