You take Unity pro, UE4, Cryengine, Esenthel, or Unity free. People can still do things with Unity free. Especially since you can build android apps with it. FuzzyQuills is making a pretty cool android game with Unity free. Even has image effects:). neoDash

Almost forgot. He also has soft shadows in the game too. What a talented dev can do with limited resources.

I use UE4 to prototype, i'm not sure to go full game with it caus of Royalties. I use two other 3D engines not in your list , in one of them i have a desktop game going on , and i have less tools, but :
    - better shadows
    - more features than Unity Free graphics
    - render to textures
    - indie cheap price and no royalties
    - easy framework to program gameplay

Indeed you can do a lot with Unity Free , specially if you don't target performance and better full screen effects.
I keep Unity Free for 2D desktop and mobile 3D games, you have choice indeed.

What matters is not the 3D Engine , but your ability to make a game whatever is the 3D or 2D engine behind.
Even with some simple and limited 2D engine , if you have the skills you can compose a great game.

I stand utterly corrected. Thanks, Unity!

Just looked at the difference between free and paid? They look almost identical! Unity have been really generous!

Please close this thread. It's no longer valid since U5 was released.
