This affected three of my students at middle school today. In looking they all had version 5.6 and when they tried to open their project it said it couldn't because there was an instance of unity running in the background. Even when we rebooted and looked in task manager to make sure Unity was not running it gave us the same error message.

I have read that I need to remove the UnityLockFile . I did that as my one class was ending and re-Booted , but it looked like unity was just hanging when the class ended. . the thing is this happening to three of my 40 students in the same class, so it's got to be an error others are having also.

    Thank you

Kent - We are seeing the same problem here at JCCC, however it seems to be rather random. It will causing problems on some workstations and not others. This was just reported that it just started today. Have you updated to 5.6.3p4? We are still at 5.6.3f1 and not sure if that will help or not.

I agree. Why did this all of the sudden just pop up and become a problem? I have tried older versions of 5.6.X and they do the same thing as well.

It is only happening in Windows 10 far, The projects will no longer open in 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6. When you try and install 2017 it will tell you it cannot uninstall previous versions of Unity because the editor is running ( which it is NOT) and ask you what you want to proceed . If you do then it will not open in 2017 at all.

Why no answers from tech support?

This is where the problem started yesterday - we cannot open any projects in 5.4, 5.5, 5.6 because we get this error message

I tried deleted that lock file as well and it does not really help. Same problem. You can create a new project and run it once, after that you cannot open it again.

I am at a community college in overland park, KS. We have many students complaining about problems trying to login into the unity cloud platform and unable to get it to work correctly as well. Maybe it is just a problem with something at Unity's network end?

I started getting this same problem once I upgraded to 5.6.3p4. I am currently downgrading to 5.6.3p3 which worked well for me before. I will let you know if that fixed it for me.

After downgrading to 5.6.3p3 I was able to open my project. Prior to that it would just get stuck on 5.6.3p4 and never open. I hope this helps

I am getting this problem today on 5.6.3p1, even when starting a new project. Rebooted, loaded an old project successfully, but I still cannot create a new project at all. It locks up during the creation process.

I posted in another thread, but in an effort to communicate a fix widely, if you log out of your account when starting Unity, then select Work Offline, it works. I was even able to sign in manually once I was in a project.

Also I found this worked this morning -

Open a new project. Then when the new project window is open go open the project you want. Worked two out of two so far. I will try your method also. Are you at a college?

So do you teach Unity there? I teach Unity at a middle and high school . We have posted some solutions at the end of this thread.

I don't teach. I am IT support and have been working with the teachers here at JCCC trying to troubleshoot this.

It seems when you create a project the first time it opens up and works ok, but then close it and re-open it a second time and that is when it never opens and you can see in the task mangler that it is still running.

    I found that if you
open a new project - any name
then you can go open a existing project and it will load

    From Unity tech support today

Do you still experience the bug? If yes, please follow the steps below:

There should be a fix deployed by now, but note that it is DNS configuration change so it will need time to propagate.

So be sure to try launching the Editor normally before doing any of these workarounds below.

We have identified these temporary workarounds that fix this Editor hanging issue for the moment:
    1) Disconnect network cable when starting Unity.
    2) Retry until it works (usually 4-5 times).
    3) Add a line to your host file (https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/27350/beginner-geek-how-to-edit-your-hosts-file/ for guidance!) , this resolves the issue currently. The line to add is 127.0.0.1 update.unity3d.com to /etc/hosts (Mac/Linux) or C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts (Windows).
This is a TEMPORARY fix only and we would encourage you to remove that line again in a few days and retry launching the Editor normally.

If you have any additional questions feel free to ask.

This just started happening to me today. (possible after windows update) yet no one else in the office as yet.
Unity just shuts down it's process a few seconds after I start it.
No other unity instances running in task manager.
Restarting PC doesn't help ( surface windows 10) Unity 5.6.3.p3
Logging out of account doesn't work.
Disabling network and restarting multiple times does nothing.
There is no information in the UNity log. No errors. last logged info is "Initializing Unity extensions:" and the last one in log is "UnityEngine.Advertisements.dll"
5.6.3.p3 CAN create a new empty project and open it. It just can't open The project we are working on.
Opening the new project, then from within unity trying to switch projects does not work.
deleting UnityLockFile from project/Temp folder didnt work (it just creates another lock file when launching)
tried switching to different branches in git / grabbing old versions of project... didn't work
tried deleting everything from temp/ folder. no luck
    editing localhosts didnt work

deleting Library folder, forcing unity to reset and re-import everything... worked! the project loaded. But then you have to switch to target platform, and reimport everything again.
    Hope this helps someone else.

Note:- Unity should add a popup that requests "choose target platform?" before importing everything.
