I've been getting this error for 2 days now, ever since I updated to 5.3.1, but even after uninstalling & reinstalling previous versions of Unity I still get that error. Because of this error I cannot open Unity at all which is very frustrating. I've been looking for a solution, but no success yet. Please help. I have attached an image of the error.

I wish but I can't access preference because Unity does not open any projects. Every time I try to open a project it give me the error showed in the image attached.

I installed Unity 5.2.4 on a usb key using another computer and was able to run a project from the usb. So I try to run unity from my usb on the current computer and I get the same error.

You could try to uninstall Unity 5.3 and remove from the Windows Registry the Entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Unity Technologies

Thank you it works now, but it's kinda slower when opening a project. Well at least it works.

You'll have to run Unity as administrator

So, Did this get fixed or is there a fix? I just installed my new pc and can't seem to get Unity working at all. I tried ruling out that unity or my windows account didn't have the rights to write to the selected folder or drive, but that doesn't fix anything. Such a bummer. Couldn't wait to get started on this new PC and now I have been shouting at it for the past hour.

[edit] Installed Unity 5.2.4, completely removed Unity 5.3.4 including registry entries. When I start it and select a project / create a new one I the !Createdirectoyrecursive(fullpath) error 5 times... but it allows me to at least start unity. Selecting a custom cache path throws the error message again. I can at least work in the scene and project as far as I can tell. But it leaves me worried, I do not want to lose any work.

    @Jordi-Bonastre etc,

I am still stuffed by the Fatal Error "!CreateDirectoryRecursive(fullpath)"

I have utterly UTTERLY uninstalled Unity (both/either latest or beta) and deleted all folders and deleted ALL Registry references and re-installed - that doesn't help at all.

I cannot alter Preferences within Unity because I cannot open an existing OR create a new Project without generating the above Fatal Error.

    Help! Anyone!?

I got this. Tried EVERYTHING. Ultimately I reset the PC after backing up. Drastic but only thing that worked...

Before attempting this, I recommend backing up the Library directory. I was able to open my project after using this solution, however, all of the custom input axis and quality settings were reset, so I will need to redefine them. If you create a backup, you may be able to restore certain parts of the Library directory. I was unable to restore anything from my backup, but it's still probably a good idea to have it.

I was able to open a project that was returning this error by deleting the Library and obj directories in the project folder. The next time I tried to open the project, these folders were automatically regenerated by the editor. It took a while to load, but I was able to get the project open in Unity 5.4.0f2 Personal.

Before using this solution, I did set a custom GI cache location by creating a new project to access the preferences interface. That did not solve anything for me, but if deleting the directories doesn't work then it may have been a necessary step.

Edit: After looking at an answer to a slightly different error, the obj directory may not exist in your project. Even if it does exist, it may only be necessary to delete the Library folder.

anyone have a real fix for this issues, cant believe unity has no support to fix this issue, not restoring my pc just to make a program work.

    error - !createdirectoyrecursive(fullpath)

    reinstalled twice.
    installed all plugins

Sorry folks. The ONLY thing that worked for me was to back everything up and then wipe all and restart with a Windows 10 reset. And I want to emphasise I tried everything (and every combination thereof) before taking that drastic step... :(

i faced the same problem, but solved!

    Work around:
    1. check your Editor.log (For mac: Users/your_name/Library/Logs/Unity/Editor.log)
    2. see error log (as for me, '/Users/my_name/Library/Caches/com.unity3d.UnityEditor' failed: Permission denied)
    3. change permission for ~/Library/Caches/ as 755
    4. open project

After looking for various registry keys, cleaning everything with Ccleaner, removing and installing over and over, the fix for me under Windows 8.1 was remove the folder: C:\Users\<user>\AppData\LocalLow\Unity\Cache. Perks not to me, but for this guy: http://answers.unity3d.com/questions/981430/unity-5-fatal-error.html

Wasted of work a full afternoon until find this.

I had exactly the same problem. I managed to solve this problem on the Windows platform by checking the hard drive for errors and fixing them (chckdsk / f c: ).
