Excitedly downloaded the 4 Pro Beta, but now I can't open Unity due to some licensing confusion.

I had the free 3.5 Pro activated, downloaded installed 4.0 beta from the link sent by Unity, and I'm locked out from the word GO.

I'm having exactly the same issue under identical circumstances. Unity 4.0 beta 7 for Windows shows a modal dialog "License check" with text, "This prerelease version of Unity 4.0 can only be run by Unity 4.x license holders." No option to activate, just a Quit button. Tried the same thing 2x and then tried a clean install. Same thing every time.

UPDATE: Digging into the engine logs, I'm seeing:
    ...
    LicenseInfo:InitializeProtection
open PACE from our own executable
    opened PACE, get info...
    checked authorization, authstate=100 r=0
    ReadDeveloperData
    ReadTokens
    ...
    HackedLicenseCheck: auth e01e931db6293caed2fcc042e1639e93fa3b5155102d0735ffdf674babda266584c34cfc946a3370 - hash bcea2649ba9e444d2d44e9b896a85fc2
HackedLicenseCheck: The requested URL returned error: 400 - 09f2b20a1a21813ec3c5a685c51969d2
    HackedLicenseCheck: Not Approved

Could this be a server problem?

Having the same problem here, but I'm on Mac.

I've just activated my pro 3.5 license though so I don't know if that created an issue.

3.5 went ok from basic to pro, but 4 gives me the same error :

This prerelease version of Unity 4.0 can only be run by 4.x license holders.

Hey Unity folks, please get this fixed?? I've ordered/paid for Unity Pro a couple of weeks back and have been using it just fine, but I just downloaded and installed Unity 4 Pro Beta, and just like the two other people in this thread, I get a licensing error, even though my Unity 3.5.x Pro was licensed and working.... (and BTW, the Unity 4 install upgraded my Unity 3.x, and now I can't use Unity, thanks...)

As I understand it, the access to the Unity 4 public beta is for people who pre-order Unity Pro 4.

    From https://store.unity3d.com/

    Introducing Unity Pro 4
Pre-order Unity Pro 4 to get access to the Unity Pro 4.0 pre-order beta
If you have pre-ordered Unity Pro 4 download it here

When you pre-order Unity 4 you automatically receive Unity 3.5.

If you have pre-ordered pro and still have issues, let us know!

I've actually got the download link after I logged in the store so I preordered it. I can even give you the invoice number I got when I purchased the preorder.

And I get this -> This prerelease version of Unity 4.0 can only be run by 4.x license holders.

As I said 3.5.5 pro works fine.

Same thing here, upgraded to 4.0 about a month ago, reactivated 3.5 and everything was working fine. Today I downloaded and installed the 4.0 beta 7 and I get the same message, "This prerelease version of Unity 4.0 can only be run by Unity 4.x license holders.", and nothing but a Quit button.

UPDATE: The problem seems to be random, I successfully got in once, poked the new Unity a bit, tried again and the error message appeared again.

Ok. For you three who have posted, we'll look into this. If anyone else has pre-ordered and is having issues, post with details.

Remember, Unite is in full swing and most of the devs are here. We'll get to this ASAP.

I have indeed pre-ordered Unity 4 August 1st, here is a quote from the email/receipt I got from Unity corp:

    "Unity Technologies
    Thank you for choosing Unity
Omar M----, thank you for pre-ordering Unity 4.0. Your current serial number(s) are valid for both Unity 3.5 and Unity 4.0."

You aren't loosing much to see. Still there are no docs on the new tools and the sample project is the same Angry Bots of Unity 3.

There's plenty of stuff to try out, especially mecanim which is pretty simple to use if you've been to the Unite session.

    Hello.

I am Unity staff member, and based on the data from rtargosz, I have looked up the issue.

On the Unity Beta Download page it says "If you have not yet activated your free Unity Pro 3.5 license that you received when you pre-ordered Unity Pro 4, you might experience a wait time of up to 24 hours to access the pre-order beta".

I suggest that you are being hit by that restriction.

It appears to me that you have installed Unity on your machine today for the first time ever (you may have other computers with Unity 3.x but that doesn't count). The activation data will be synced back to a central database tonight (European time).

Tomorrow, your activation data will present to the server validating your 4.x permissions, and you should be able to try the new features.

If you still have problems, please contact Support.

    Thanks!

"It appears to me that you have installed Unity on your machine today for the first time ever (you may have other computers with Unity 3.x but that doesn't count)."

Why doesn't tech support ever read the full emails? I've been using Unity 3d Pro v3.x on this machine since August 1st 2012, and until today it worked. I then "upgraded" this exact same machine to v4.0 beta (I ran the installer, this is a Mac), and the error in v4.x appears.

    Thanks.

I think you can't run the beta using educational license.
    Probably must be full license.

The 4.0 pre-order beta is for full-price or upgrade serials purchased from our web store or sales team. We do not yet have a beta for customers who have pre-ordered reduced price versions. Sorry.

Let me just say a few words. To get Unity 4.0 pre-order beta running you:

    a) Need to have activated your 3.x version on a machine.

    b) Need to be activating 4.0.0b7 on the same machine

    c) and be doing this 24hours apart.

Unity 4.0.0b7 uses a different licensing system to 3.x. There is a process that runs each night that looks at activation history and extends 4.0 rights to customers who have 3.x and have pre-ordered through Unity.

Strictly speaking the overnight process runs in the early hours of each morning European Central time. If you activate Unity 3.x on your machine at say 21:00 CET, and try to activate 4.0 at 08:00 CET the next day you'll be okay. We say 24 hours purely to be on the safe side.

I know this all sounds bonkers... It's a temporary measure we have in place to help ease the transition from 3.x to 4.x. I can only apologise that it's causing you all frustration.

Hi, I activated my 3.5 license 08-06 for this machine(PC). We purchased and used the 4.0 serial we recieved but the beta still gives me the license error.

    Any ideas?

I got mine working after 8 hours. Downloaded and installed the beta around 5pm EST, worked after 1am.

I had pre-ordered this a month ago and activated the 3.5 Pro keys. So I guessing its just a server issue.

We have identified users who have indeed fulfilled all the requirements but still can´t get past the license check, we are looking into the problem and will hopefully have it fixed soon. It looks like a server side issue. Thank you for your patience.

@GoCatGoGamesLLC: If you submit a bug report with your serial number inside we can have a look at your case as well and verify a potential fix against it. Send me the case number if you do.

Being snarky back at them isn't going to help either. (Not that I think LittleAngel was attempting to be snarky - how's he supposed to know that you've sent the case number in private?) I mean geez dude, the fact that you had to go back and edit your own post for being "driven by hate" should tell you that you're a little over-invested in this, maybe?

As far as I can see, the new license system is as much in beta as Unity itself is. It is going to have problems - likely some big ones - as Unity betas usually do. If you're not willing to tolerate that, don't use beta software; wait for the 4.0 final release to come out.

I have been waiting since yesterday, and I still can't login either.., same thing with Beta only available for pre-order users (which I'am).
Do I need to activate the 3.x license that was sent to me when I pre-ordered Unity4 ?
I mean, I already have a 3.x license and a Unity license active here, do I need to activate the other one ?

Don't call me dude, mind your own life when you don't know the facts. I had posted my CASE NUMBER in the message, to which he replied "Post your case number".

Good luck getting it to work, everyone else. If you have any problems I'm sure superpig will tell you exactly how to handle it.

Meh, Unity 4 worked for me, but I decided a new Unity version is a good moment for a fresh windows install.
Now I need to wait until someone resets my activation limit and then I probably need to wait 24 hours again.
I just hope I'll get it up and running again until Ludum Dare this weekend or I can't participate.

How about finally doing something about the install limit? I'm sure it must be annoying to get contacted for these resets, it definitely is for your customers.

We have deployed a server side fix which should fix the license check for those who didn't have a working Unity 4 beta even after waiting 24 hours (or more). It seems to have only affected those who activated Unity 3.5 with the manual activation method. Please let us know if the issues persists after this.

Is there a chance it'll work in under 24hrs? I want to use Unity4 at Ludum dare, which will start in 14 hours and I just activated my license. If not, then I'll just start with 3.5 and migrate it.

I noticed your post above, you will need to activate with the serial you received when you pre-ordered. But you can go ahead and send me your current serial and I can check it out for you (email/PM/fogbugz case number).

It will probably be ready a few hours after it starts (I think ca. 4 hours).

@GoCatGoGamesLLC Please be more courteous to Unity staff and forum posters. We are under extreme pressure from the launch of the beta, the systems need ironing out and we are trying hard to help as much as possible while at Unite.

Having the same problem for the past 4 days. Have submitted a bug report, and have waited for more than 24 hours (obviously) after the Unity 4 installation for it to "activate" my license. Nope, still nothing. Same error "License Check: The prerelease version of Unity 4.0 can only be run by 4.x license holders" ...

Same here. Got a licensed Update from 3.5 Pro to 4.x Pro and Unity 4 Beta doesn´t let me in. I already wrote an Email to Sales where we bought 3 (!) Pro Licenses but haven´t got an answer yet.
    Pls help soon ...

Have you followed the link in the auto-reply from sales to the submission form? This will speed things up, as it will target your local sales rep, rather than being dropped in the pool to be sorted.

    http://unity3d.com/company/sales

And, at the risk of being annoying, you have activated the 3.5P Pro licenses that came with the new purchases on the machines that you are testing the beta with?

Count me in the crowd of the "License Check" failures.

The machine I'm trying to install 4.0 on had 3.5.x installed and activated, it's a full Unity Pro license, and was activated via the internet quite some time ago. I've waited more than 24 hours, but still get the license failure.

I *do* run HostsExpert on my systems (it locks the HOSTS file) as well as Malwarebytes Pro (active protection). I'm wondering if there could be something interfering with the communication with the new license servers(?).

Unlikely that they impact it unless you explicitely disallow stuff like akamai and CDNs.

Did you ensure that the license installed and activated on the machine is your Unity 4 pro one? Unity 3.x licenses are invalid in unity 4 as such ownership of a 3.x Pro license would be worthless

    You are issued a Unity 4.0 license(s) when your pre-order Unity 4.0.

You need to update your Unity 3.5.x licenses with the Unity 4.0 license for the Unity Beta to work.

OK - so what I think you're saying is that I need to go to the machine with the 3.5.5 install, go to the help menu, install the new key (which I *thought* was the same number - but maybe it's not), reactivate it, then install 4.0? I'll give that a shot and report back....

    I'm so sorry. I'm wrong.

It is the same key. I got confused because the Android license changed my iOS license into a combined license.

If you're doing this on Windows for the duration of the install and activation disable your firewall and 'run as administrator' the install process. Then before you run Unity 4 Beta for the first time make sure you allow access through the firewall. I've seen on occasion (but not in a very long time) where the dialogue asking for permission for the App to have access to the internet doesn't 'pop' up. That is why I just use the Windows 7 / Windows 8 standard security suite / firewall nowadays.

Check the 'Events' viewer for errors regarding Unity. On the osX open your Console and check those logs for errors.

I did not disable the Windows Firewall but when asked for the 1st time running the Unity 4 Beta I allowed access both on Public and Private networks to the Internet (say at home and at the library).

Is it my imagination is is Unity 4 Beta 7 alot faster then Unity 3.5.5.f3?!
