We just released the Bank of England's Virtual Tour app for iOS, Android and Flash, having spent 18 months working with them on developing it. The app was built in Unity 4 and features custom 360° panoramic photography of key locations within their historic building, a spinnable 3D model of their building as a main menu, and hotspots to tap that expand to deliver text and images containing interesting facts. Also included is a tour of the security features found on the current range of UK bank notes.

Using Unity allowed us to maintain a single project for all three platforms, integrate event-driven analytics using NeatPlug's Flurry plugin, and where available makes use of devices internal gyroscope to make bank note holograms shimmer when tilted.

The app is available for free on the Apple App Store, Google Play and on the Bank of England's own web site as a Flash version.

This looks like solid work, congratulations. How did you implement the virtual tours? I really like to see Unity in this context, a mainstream business / marketing / infotainment app. The sooner Unity is considered the default choice for this stuff, the better.

@polytropoi Thanks! The decision to use Unity was relatively easy: a single codebase, multi-platform builds including Flash for non-mobile users, high quality 3D environments and a robust 2D interface API. We could have opted to develop the entire thing in Flash but I doubt we would have achieved the quality we were looking for. There were some drawbacks - size of the final app being the main one - but on balance we feel Unity was the perfect choice.

I am surprised we don't see more of these sorts of projects made in Unity. Gaming is a big industry, but it's not the only one. We used Unity to deliver an immersive multi-player sustainable building experience at Siemen's Crystal last year, and again it was the perfect development platform.
