I've just installed Unity 5 and realized that it didn't remove Unity 4.6. Is it suppose to still be there after Unity 5 has been installed? Do I need to manually remove it?

You should keep it, in case you need it for something.

I will note here that 4.6 works perfectly as if nothing was installed over it if you install unity 5, so I recommend keeping it around for if a project upgrade to Unity 5 goes horribly wrong... :D

Also noting: this only seems to happen on x64 based systems. (This is due to Windows splitting program files into two groups)

I had Unity 4 installed so that I could go through some online tutorials. I now have Unity 5 installed for the same purpose and hopefully to actually do some creating. My Unity 4 installation doesn't have any saved projects or use for me any more, but it doesn't appear in the list of programs in Windows' Add/Remove Programs. Unity 5.3.1 does appear, but nothing for Unity 4.6.1. I see that Unity 4 is still taking up 5GB of hard drive space in my Program Files (x86) folder, so I would like to remove it, but I don't want to just delete it and leave behind registry clutter.

Has anyone successfully - and cleanly - removed Unity 4 after installing 5?

    Thanks!

I did by removing 4.x first. ;) Ah well, things do go wrong from time to time. :)

Installing 5 over 4 seems to have some other issues; I found last night that Unity won't open Visual Studio 2015 to edit scripts even though I have it selected as the external script editor. I see a progress bar that says it's opening Visual Studio and then MonoDevelop opens the script with an error message saying it's having a problem loading an object of an unknown type.

Searching the issue tracker I see that this is a problem that is marked solved in an update to Unity 4, but for me it's still happening with Unity 5.

I was hoping to spend time learning to use Unity and not learning how to work around its installation bugs.

For what it's worth, in case someone else finds this thread who is having the same problem:

I was able to fix the problem with Unity opening MonoDevelop instead of VS2015 by opening Visual Studio 2015 on its own and updating the File Associations to include .CS files.
