I think this would be a good idea and and wise investment for Unity to take. I mean there are only a few giants out there being Sony, Nintendo, and XBox. With Unity 3D being on board as a console system, us Indie developers will be a force to be reckoned with. It would also cut out the huge license cost of getting a PS4, Wii U, etc... console license. Unity 3D Console cost I cannot say how much initial cost should be, but I'd say somewhere around $300-$400? Too high...........too-low?
It would be a much better approach to develop our games and publish them straight from the console, of course the free version will be available for any end-user to use and have fun with, and they can purchase a Pro license if they wish. Come to think of it, end-users should also be giving the option to add game elements to the existing games that are applicable, such as an open world RPG. An end-user can add or make their own assets thought the Unity game asset store and add it to the game. Ok maybe I'm going overboard with this, but just a thought ;)

I'm talking about Unity having it's own gaming console, and I get that you can deploy to just about every platform. Why not have Unity have it's own platform through it's own Console?

Unity isn't a hardware company, and given Unity's reputation among gamers, I don't think many would line up to buy a box that can only run Unity games. But if you want to be able to deploy games to a console, a Steam Machine (or Steam Box, whichever they are calling them) should suit your needs okay. Depending, of course, on what restrictions are put on development. Since SteamOS is free and Valve isn't producing the boxes, I doubt the restrictions will be anything near what the big console makers have.

Why should they? Developing a console isn't like building a PC. There is a significant amount of time and money that goes into it.

Not to mention Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony all have flagship products and exclusive titles for their platforms that help further sales.

Unity was built from innovation and was told he wouldn't go far and look to where Unity is now. With devices such as RaspberryPi it is highly possible. I do get your point because if the project went downhill such as SEGA Unity may suffer greatly and I wouldn't ever want that to happen.
But if all goes well, it could be a new revolution in the gaming console world.

You are kidding right? The Raspberry Pi cannot even run Android let alone Unity.

Not in the slightest. Consumers, and developers for that matter, do not need yet another console.

That would make since, about MS, Nintendo, and Sony having flagship. Also I'm not talking about actually using RaspberryPi to use as the Unity console lol, as you'll need something more powerful than a high end gaming laptop if anything.

Why mention it at all then? If you're trying to indicate success, keep in mind that the Raspberry Pi had no competition when it emerged. Console markets have many forms of competition and they are all backed up by large companies.

Oh I just noticed there is a Reply button to reply to your message. I'm New on the forum and to Unity for that matter, but ironically been around since 2012. Just haven't been active in the community till now.

I just think certain games are milked WAY too much, such as COD, FIFA, Mario, etc...The market needs something fresh because even if a Unity game is published on those consoles it will still be shadowed by those said titles.

Super Mario is best viewed as a technical demonstration. It is the flagship product for their consoles that shows off the capabilities and typically introduces gameplay concepts that amusingly no one thought of before. Super Mario Galaxy's weird gravity mechanic is a good example of that.

As for what the market does or does not need, if it is selling why change it?

Yep Mario does have much variations opposed to Assassin Creed, Super Street Fighters, and the likes which only have a few minor changes, yet people will flee to buy them without 2nd thought. I'm a huge fan of Mario and Zelda and saw the Zelda U preview for the Wii-U and it looks amazing, because they actually care about their fan-base opposed to PS4, but that's just my opinion. My point is that 1000's of Unity Games are being developed and most are really great titles but don't usually see the day of sunlight. A few ver successful one's would be SuperHot as so was Monument Valley, by USTWO.

I'm getting the feeling that Microsoft is going to kill off Xbox, but buy Unity, so this thread seems 180 degrees from reality to me.

Unity would have to make a game before it has a console. Maybe you should be asking for that first.

Given nobody gives a rats ass about steam's console, I think this is a fairly terrible idea. It would never be successful in a million years and unity would lose a few million trying to make it so.

    It's a nice idea. :D
But entering the console business, was always a risky venture. And still is.
Even for companies that have millions or billions of dollars behind it.
    But then again, who knows.
One day Unity might create a game console and it might do well. :D
    Anything is possible.

And probably Dreamcast 2 or Dreamcast Revolution, might come out in the not too distant future.
I still have hope! :D

This was an interesting question by the way. :D

    Oh my Gosh!!
    Now that has me thinking,...............
Imagine, if Microsoft did buy Unity and names their next game console:

"Ladies and Gentlemen............... I give to you,.......... Microsofts newest gaming console,...........................................................................................................
    The Xbox Unity!!"

    Crowd applauses!!
    :D

Adam Sessler stands up with tears in his eyes and claps to his hearts content! Lol! :D

Could this be a reality, in the not to distant future?
    He! He!

PS: I think it's safe to say, that with Microsoft, anything unexpected, is almost possible. :p
And hopefully, no Microsoft Xbox devs are reading this!

Oh my Gosh!! What if they did?!

yep pretty much! of course they're generally competing with pc gamers, who already have gaming rigs (most of the time). Why would pc gamers buy another pc (thats not as good - not sure never checked specs)

What are you talking about? Unity makes tons of games through Tutorials, though the question becomes Unity does create games because We are Unity, essentially.

Not with that attitude it won't, be a little optimistic in seeing things ;) Though there would need to be something unique to bring to the table in becoming a full fledged console such maybe as cross-platform gameplay from Console to Console. IE A gamer on the Unity Game Console can play multi-player with a gamer on say the PS4 console or PC.

Thumbs down. This can drive a firm towards its liquidation. Unity entering the console market is the lamest thing it could ever do.

Fantasies are what dreams are made of, and you may be right, as the Unity Community probably isn't ready for such a jump, as seen here. -EDIT: Top Secret ;)
