For Lab3, I have a couple questions. Are we supposed to put the code for our editor tool somewhere or just explain it similar to the written outline of how we would change the folder structure? Also, for the assignment explained in step 16, can we present it however we want after creating the functions as long as it works in the webplayer for others to test it?

I didn't put up my code, iirc, all it asks for is your folder list.

As for making functions, pretty much yes. Making them to functions is for your benefit. It's way better than having a ridiculously big function, as it's more organized and easier to use in a later time.

Can someone check this link for me? My lab 3 was working in unity, but my GUI isn't showing up right in the webplayer for me. Thanks.

Ah, you mean the yellow hollowed/outlined text. It's showing up for me, and counting right. What is it showing you?

If you mean, why it is behind the seconds on the bottom, then it's because it's rounded up to the nearest second. It is, however in sync with the playtime.

That's great to hear it's showing up fine for you, when I tried it on my Mac after doing the webplayer build and putting it up there, it shows up at start but once I start the time it starts flickering (like disappearing and reappearing). Thanks for checking :).

If the Walker Boys are watching the thread, I'd be interested in their opinion of the new monoscript js editor included with 3.4. Based on the training kits advice, I moved over to Unity Develop for my training, primarily for the library support. Would the general consensus be that the out of the box solution is currently superior?

Hi there, I'm just starting out with programming for Unity and want to thank you for your wonderful resource.

Quick question if I may. Are there any reasons you chose to use Javascript over C# for the tutorials? I'm just starting out, but reading many threads asking what language people recommend, C# seems to be the one that is most recommended. However you're (extremely clearly) a professional and I'm sure there are reasons for your choice. Is it because Javascript is an easier language to teach and/or learn? Does Javascript suffer a performance hit or loss of flexibility over C# as a result in the long run?

    Thank you :)

@all: I just posted my lab1 project 2 days ago, today I recieved the pass for lab2, yay!

@Tym: I personaly think it is because it's easier to write JS, but also because it easy applicable with webbased games. As I see it, if you're starting at C#, you might as well go all the way and go C++, as that's the industry standard for games. C++ is is much faster, compared to C# and the slightly slower JS. My 2 cents

I am almost ready to submit my lab02 project, anybody wants to test drive it?
    http://sleepycoders.org/portfolio/lab02-project-asteroidbuster/
You can leave feedback as a comment on the blog, see if you can beat my highscore.
The Green Ship is not done yet, since I am still in the process of learning about UVing and Texturing.

    On another note:
Any mature artistic talent out there that would be interested in a knowledge exchange (Programming <--> Modelling/Texturing)
I would answer your programming questions and you could help me understand the concepts behind Modelling / Texturing.
(at the moment mainly uv mapping and texturing)

    Thanks
    Josh

JavaScript is actually called UnityScript and it is more similar to the C# then the JavaScript programing language. Because it is created for Unity, learning UnityScript is easier then the C# or Boo, there are much more tutorials for UnityScript then C# (there are almost none for Boo), for the beginners it is easier to grasp the basics of programing in the UnityScript. If you search the forum about the subject you will notice that you will have to learn both languages for serious game development, but you wont need that in the next year or two.
    @Tberg
Unity does not support the C++ so there is no point in suggesting it, and also C++ is not "much" faster then C#, it is faster in some cases because it is highly optimizeable, but that is very time consuming.
    @joshimoo
Great game, fantastic job with the high score screen. If you are working in blender, I recommend that you visit a blendercookie.com, they have tutorials for texturing and UV mapping.

Hey, for my second lab, I want my spaceship to tilt to the left or right based on which direction it is going. My first thought is to have the ship rotate by the value of Input.GetAxis("Horizontal"). This works but I am not sure how to clamp the amount of rotation. I also want to have the ship return to its original rotation when the left or right arrow key is released.

Any help with this issue would be much appreciated, thanks!

I cannot seem to get the password for the 1st lab videos? I took all of the exams, maybe its at the end of the exam 4 because I skipped through that fast and now don't have the password to see the results. Never received emails either. :p
But so far that tutorials are awesome. Learned a lot about the terrains since I know Java already :)

    Hi,

Just a quick update. New videos are in the works. And comments to questions below. Thanks guys. You all are producing some awesome Lab projects! Keep up the great work. :)

@Vivek. These would be a good starting point to understand the basics. Mobile development is certainly on our list. Until then, I would suggest going to the following for a great step by step intro in iOS and android

@pothb. Mario hitting head, but not coming down (floating) or fast. Is this still an issue for you? If so, let me know. Thank you.

@Deadguy71. Yep, the first set of videos are ‘quick reference’ guides. And yes, they are a bit out of order on vimeo. If you go to the main site (wbs) and use that as your guide it will work better. There’s a slight issue on reordering video when uploading lots of files to vimeo. :\
We are working currently on providing several Lab projects for the first set of videos to assist new users, in working through Unity basics with objectives and goals (and making sure it’s fun).

@Kanly. Great job with the MazeGen. http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/97532-MazeGEN-procedurally-generated-mazes

@Jay_Santos and bryanleister. Thanks for the boost of encouragement to the community. And congrats to both of you on your projects. :)

@Tberg. Thank you. We’re always happy to hear the training is helping out.

@moosky13. Glad to hear it worked.

@dannyskim. Thank you. I appreciate all that you said.

@airesdav333. Yes. It’s on our list, but at the bottom. Timeframe, not sure.

@norochi89. I think I emailed you about the train. If not, just let me know.

@cmasterenko. Yep, it works for me, too.

@MChez. Great question. When it comes to monoDevelop, I would happily suggest moving over to it if you are looking for a solid, up to date intellisense and the ability to debug your code. For me, I’ve found myself using three different ones, depending on the situation. I prefer unityDevelop, simply because it allows you to tear and dock tabs anywhere. I like to have multiple scripts up all the time. :) If you are using both C# and UnityScript, then monoDevelop is definitely a great tool to use, as well.

    @clx. You are welcome.

@Tym. I’d echo what Stec said. Let me know if you have further questions on it.

@joshimoo. Great job. That was fun playing through. I believe Eric will have comments for you soon, if not already. :)

@LaytProducts. Just sent a message to you. Let me know by email. Thanks.

@eam1215. Tried the link, but the host said it was being reviewed. Email me when it’s back up. Thanks.

@Anyone that hasn’t received a response about their labs. If it’s been more than a few days, be sure and send us another email. Many of the emails get sent to our spam/junk folders. We check them everyday just in case. :)

    Thank you!

I've changed around a bit of code. And it isn't a problem anymore, the only odd thing that happens is that if I hit the block exactly right with a run jump, Mario still moves upward after plainly hitting the block. I suspect it's because the collisionbox for the head is smaller than the sprite or collision box for the body.

Hey guys, long time no see!

I'm back with some news and a question:

Here's the news: My first iOS/Android game has been ready for beta testing for a couple of weeks, all I'm waiting is the art (which should be done in a couple of weeks) and I'm good to go!

And now the question: I am having a hard time with my materials... I am using a 2D object pretty much the same way the Lab 3 teaches you, here's the inspector for the object

    $Screen shot 2011-08-08 at 8.28.15 PM.png

And here's the inspector for the sprite I'm using in the material

    $Screen shot 2011-08-08 at 8.29.58 PM.png

Notice that I selected the Wrap Mode as repeat... However, when I apply this texture to the object above, it gets stretched, see image below:

    $Screen shot 2011-08-08 at 8.30.23 PM.png

Question is: I wanted to use the texture as tiled, what am I doing wrong here?

    Thanks in advance,

    Jay_Santos

About downloading the Lab 4 work files, it wasn't prompting me for a password to get the files. Could that be the issue?

write out the password in notepad, make sure it's good, then copy paste it. Don't manually type it.

Oh....... haha... dude, try again, and press back after you type in the password.

EDIT: ProfCWalker, just wanted to note... Part 58 and 59 of Lab 04 2D Mario is a a little backward, since part 58 has all of part 59 in it already. It sort of confused me a bit since I couldn't find the videos before it. But after continuing through, I found it on 59.

I don't know if someone mentioned it before, but I couldn't find it.

I just wanted to say THANK YOU SO MUCH for these Tutorials. i have never found better tutorials on anything anywhere! Unlinke other popular videos, you actually explain the code, syntax, and EVERYTHING. Most just give you an unhelpful snippet. The video on dot.navigation is single handedly the most helpful video I've ever watched.Thank you again, and this is definitely the most thorough JavaScript tutorial series ever!!!

I'm having the exact same problem. The password only works for the intro video - none of the other videos in lab 1 will accept that password. I tried every password from each exam as well, nothing works.

Edit: Scratch that! It was my browser Google Chrome. I tried the lab videos in Firefox and they worked perfectly.

    Hi,

@LatexMonkeys and DarkKnight. Be sure to just copy and paste the password. Also, you may want to switch to a different web browser to see if that could be the issue. Hope that helps. :)

@TehWut. Thank you. It's always good to hear the training videos are working well.

Thanks for the your quick response! I was actually already editing my earlier post to say that switching browsers did the trick when i noticed you had already responded with the same solution. Much appreciated in any case!

Your videos are easily the most thorough and comprehensive series I've ever seen on Unity development. I'll definitely be purchasing some of your other tutorial series in the near future as well. Thanks again!

    Hi everybody,

I'm new in the forum and as you can guess I'm trying to learn Unity3D. First I want to thanks Walkers Boys Studios Authors, this is just a an amazing work and a great place to start learn Unity3D.

I just started the lessons and I'm at the part 2 : Unity Application, Tools, UI, Workflow (Videos 1 - 60)

So I thought it was 60 videos in the part 1 but I noticed that video numbering jump from "unity app 1 18 Interface Main GameObject" to "unity app 1 30 main terrain". Is that normal ?

I just want to be sure to not miss any videos :)

Again thanks for all that valuable stuff !

PS: sorry for my English, I hope my message it's understandable for everybody.

Very nice. Added a heat meter too. Its very cool, only thing I find "bad" is that you run out of power so fast cuz heat raises so high, but it seems balance so it's not really bad.

    Thx for the feedback.

I hadn't made the gun heat up so fast at first, but then one game session would take too long, and I was aiming for a shorter game.
Didn't you run into any problems with the WebPlayer?

Well, if it's not something that consistently happen, then I can't say. Since I only played through it once.
