    Trying to bake a lightmap in a mesh and get this error, what does it refer to?
    "Beast error: 5: Invalid object state
    UnityEditor.DockArea:OnGUI()"

    Please mark your Unity 3 beta questions with "Unity 3" in the subject so as not to create too much confusion...

    Ok, sorry, will do (though I did assume "beast" in the topic header would make it clear).
    Any help on the issue?

    Anyone got any input on this?
    Seeing it again for the first time in quite a while.
    The object I have highlighted is marked static.

    EDIT: Restarting Unity seems to have helped the problem,
    now the console is reporting some incorrect UVs on some objects.
    The lighting system is running though.

    Yeah I have the same problem too, even got someone else to test the project and it does work for them. I have also tried the same project on Windows 7 and I get the same error, it is just very very frustrating. It has never worked for me restarting Unity3 does not help at all. Tested on beta 4, 5, 6, and 7. Could it be something wrong with a permission on our license keys?

    I notice you've filed a bug report for this error. This should help the QA team nail it before Unity 3 is released.

    Hi Guys,

    Instead of just ranting and complaining, I have some good news and some bad news. First the good news...Unity 3.0 is absolutely incredible. I am just in ore of the work the team has done to make such a quality product for the multiplatform masses. And i just love the support for us Mac users. In my experience with Beast (when it worked) i was actually excited to see how quick and effective it was to get lovely results. So well done to all the unity crew!

    Now on to the not so good news...

    I first downloaded the recent public release pro trial for the mac and it doesn't bake, showing the same error as the OP. Invalid Object State. I tried downgrading to free version, but to no avail.

    So i tried the free windows version on the same mac, it works...very odd.

    Shame though, becuase i preferably don't want to have to use windows, and i can't really test it properly at the moment. I was hoping this would be the first unity release i would buy, but i cant bring myself to doing it with an uncertain feature like this...

    Regards

    Ok, so it doesn't seem to matter which script i try, if i run unity in OSX, i get this error...

    Beast error: 5: Invalid object state

    UnityEditor.DockArea:OnGUI()

    And the Editor Log says this...

    Beast error: 5: Invalid object state

    UnityEditor.Lightmapping:BakeAsync()
    UnityEditor.LightmapEditor:Buttons()
    UnityEditor.LightmapEditor:OnGUI()
    System.Reflection.MonoMethod:InternalInvoke(Object, Object[], Exception)
    System.Reflection.MonoMethod:Invoke(Object, BindingFlags, Binder, Object[], CultureInfo)
    System.Reflection.MethodBase:Invoke(Object, Object[])
    UnityEditor.HostView:Invoke(String, Object)
    UnityEditor.HostView:Invoke(String)
    UnityEditor.DockArea:OnGUI()

    [/Applications/buildAgent/work/68355d6e5d19d587/Projects/../Editor/Src/Lightmapping.cpp line 40]
    (Filename: /Applications/buildAgent/work/68355d6e5d19d587/Projects/../Editor/Src/Lightmapping.cpp Line: 40)

    I am pulling my hair out about this issue, because i feel as though if i can't use Beast, I can't really properly trial this great software...

    If anyone can help, it would be fantastic. Is it a graphics card driver problem? License problem, permissions? I've tried everything.

    Sorry to be a bother.

    Regards.

    Excuse me moderators for what i´m going to say : (if this is bad... feel free to delete my post)

    I´m a mac lover, but i have a pc, i´m using Windows 7 and Iatkos S3 V2 (Hackintosh), i got the problem in Hackintosh but not in Windows, .. do those peoples having the Beast Error 5 Problem are using Hackintosh ???.. just to know.. maybe that is the problem....

    In my case, i don´t really know if i have QE enabled but i have installed Nvdarwin 1.2.5 (for Nvidia 9600), games run, Unity Runs smooth, but maybe you´re right with videocard driver issue.. maybe because the medium compatibility grade of hackintoshes...

    Good chance on it as the drivers etc are not meant for what they are used and can very well cause trouble on a hackintosh

    Yes mate, I'm afraid to say that I am also experimenting with iatkos, and I had a feeling that this would be the root of the problem. But only because I am a recent Mac convert. My next computer will be a Mac. Shame I can't use beast until then. It must be a graphics driver thing. I think I'm using nvinstaller, I havnt really had any problems with graphics until now either. Who knows, I guess it could be any number of things really...

    If you or anyone else finds a solution to this problem please post your findings.

    Thanks again.

    Just tried it, no good. Same error. It sucks, but looks like we'll have to use windows at least for building lightmaps. I wonder why its just lightmaps though, the game engine itself runs very smooth...

    Have you tried another clone, .. for instance, Ideneb, .. ? or another kernel, Iatkos has 10.6.3 .. but maybe in Ideneb 1.6 (10.5.8).. and yes, Unity runs great just the lightmap tool won´t to work.. (but remember lightmaping is independent of Unity) ;)

    My issue stemmed from a single-faced object that I didn't really need, that I deleted.
    I have some other errors that I haven't tried to correct, but it seems the light-mapper does work now.

    I deleted the object I mentioned and the error no longer occurs in the project.
    Other than that I have no idea how to deal with it.

    @Don: could you submit a bug report including just that single mesh? I'll make sure Beast doesn't choke on things like that anymore.

    @others: if you could submit bug reports and include your projects, that would be very helpful.

    Thanks!

    Hi Robert,
    I sent it (the mesh) a couple of weeks ago at the request of Ricardo A, he reported it caused no errors there.

    I was having this issue as well I am running On Windows Vista Ultimate 64Bit. I couldn't figure any logical answer to this problem. It was not consistent in anyway. Finally at a random moment I realized the only variable between when it would Error 5 Invalid Object and when it would work..I couldn't believe it..It only works when I have an Internet Connection..I dont know if this is some weird issue with me only or if this is the root of the problem. I hope this helps.

    My connection is always on when the computer is and my problem cleared up when I removed the offending object.
    My only issue with Beast and Umbra is Unity runs out of memory space, so I can't use them.

    Hi mate,

    Thanks for the tip, but I am running Unity Free on a hackintosh Intel system, (not that ethical i know, but i am not doing any commercial work just yet if that's any constellation). I am running iAtkos 7 on a P35-DS3P, q6600 quad core and 8800GTS 512 to be absolutely specific.

    The problem is not sporadic for me at all. It reads Beast Error 5: Invalid Object State 100% of the time, regardless of the complexity of the scene. I wasn't sure if it was a graphics driver problem or one of a myriad of possibilities due to the nature of the hacked system and hardware.

    One interesting thing is that i installed the same distro on a fiends G1-S asus laptop recently and Beast worked fine...perplexing...

    That, coupled with your input now makes me think it is something to do with ethernet permissions or something. Perhaps i will try another driver...although i am not hopeful...

    There was another guy on here who has a hackitosh OSX system as well and ran into similar problems...Perhaps he has had some luck?

    Oh, and my internet is working fine.

    Cheers.

    I tried new ethernet drivers and took down all firewalls, but no avail. I then reinstalled and, did some poking around inside the Unity.app. I showed the contents of the package and navigated to the beast folder (Unity.app>Contents>Tools>Beast) Inside there i found a unix execuatble called 'thebeast', and one other file called libbeast.dylib. Out of interest i ran thebeast and the terminal window opened and gave me this...

    Last login: Tue Jan 18 00:28:39 on ttys000
    #Mac:~ #$ /Applications/Unity/Unity.app/Contents/Tools/Beast/thebeast ; exit;
    [INFO] Illuminate Labs Beast (Rev: 6785)
    Syntax error, the chosen command requires a scene but no input filename was specified.

    Please contact support@illuminatelabs.com for information.
    [ERROR] No valid license found!

    [Process completed]

    Probably nothing, but if anyone has a working OSX version of Unity 3.1 running could they check and see if this also happens to them and if they have a liscence file called tb.dat. Am i supposed to have this file? This may be stupid, but i have nothing else to go on right now...

    Cheers.

    Sounds like something left over from before Unity dovetailed it into their program.

    You're not supposed to have this file and everything is working as expected. When Beast is run from Unity, we provide the license key via the API. When you run it yourself, you would have to have a separate license file.

    About hackintosh: apparently Beast just doesn't work on hackintosh. Sorry, but there's nothing we can really do about it.

    If you reproduce the same error on any scene on an actual mac, please send in a bug report, but these errors shouldn't happen any more in the upcoming Unity 3.2 release.
