when will Unity 2021 be available, the official release?

also, I see the 2021 beta is at 0b5 is that getting close to an official release?

I'm getting back into using Unity and playing around with test beds so have not really started my next project yet, wondering if I should wait a bit for 2021, thoughts?

Judging from the 2020 cycle, and I think this is similar... you can count on it around half year.

I wouldn't wait for it, just start with the 2020.2. I don't expect extreme hardship to update to 2021 if and when needed (I also don't really expect that).

@Lurking-Ninja is correct. It's likely going to be a while (maybe even summer) given their current release schedule. 2020.2 was released about 1.5 months ago. You should expect about half a year before the next release

I believe 2021 will come around April.
2020.1 had about 15 or 16 beta builds.

I'm doing projects in VR, I think that still has considerable churn...

The question is, why do you really need it for?
Most project you can build with current LTS. Even VR.

And even you need something of latest, which is rarely, unless for experimental reasons, you most likely won't be done with in any upcoming months. That means, you can easily work with beta and when closing to release, there is chance, new LTS will be ready.

there was pretty big changes from 2019 to 2020 for XR Toolkit/frame work, I would hope it would stabilize soon... new VR tutorials will be based in 2021 soon enough...

If you want stability, you should basically ignore early tech releases in a new cycle. They are a glorified beta.

The timeline might be moved up because 2020.x is only getting 2 major tech releases, compared to 3 for 2017-2019.

Every version of unity is a glorified beta :D Though I agree. If we can we stay away from xxxx.1 and start to look at migrating first with xxxx.2
